I once fell in love with a Hugh Hefner bunny and took her home on the spot. She was messy too but I don't recall complaining too much. She left right after I went broke.
Real wabbits? In my humble opinion whether they are kept inside or out they need to be contained.
I built hutches in my back yard for critters that were abandoned by my kids and what have you. I now have a working compost pile beneath the screened floors of their hutches which provides an excellent source of garden fertilizer.
