As stated above, it's always made things easier for me if I arrive after everyone has arrived and settled in. Even if I'm at the location (more for corp events or such than private parties), I'll hang out and relax for a bit and then make my appearance.
This saves time of parents chasing wayward children to come see the show or what-not.
