If you can find a copy, get Strutters Guide to Clown Makeup. It's about the best tutorial (apart from actual in person mentoring) around.

You can either use red makeup to make a nose (it really doesn't matter whether you use a pencil or something else) or you can but a clown nose. Though I think it would be easier if you had a cup of makeup for this sort of purpose (using your fingers for application.) Quality clown noses are available relatively inexpensive from Proknows, Schnatlacher, and Jim Howle.

If you're buying Mehron's pencils, purchase their sharpener, also. It will make life easier - as those makeup pencils are hard to sharpen with anything else.
