I offer them. Most children who know they aren't allowed such things will say no thank you, or I can't have chocolate. If parents are there then they often will look at the parents and the mom or dad will make the call. Offer them a sticker instead.
The important thing here is that you go out and get your feet wet as a clown. Taking the plunge I call it. Set a date that you will do it.
BTW, since you were a Shyst...er.... paralegal; before- perhaps you might have some good advice you could share with the group on simple contracts??
