I think blue on the lip does not give enough contrast to see the expresion. If you do not like red (I know some guys think it is to girly) you can try black. It realy shows very well and people don't think "oh he has black on his lip" they see the expresion which is what you want.

If you blend the bottom part of the white over your eyes just a bit I think it will give you a softer look. You can do that by just patting it in.

I also am not big on "rules" for clowns. It is an art form and therefore should allow for the expresion of the artist. But you can also learn from what other people have found works. There are reasons most clowns have either a red or black lip. Some I have seen even use white. But I think too odd a color distracts from the person inside. You want to draw attention to yourself. You want people to see your emotions. To...different...a look sometimes draws attention to just your make up and not to who and what you are and are trying to say.

And don't ever feel you are locked in to what you do first. A clown face grows with you.
