I use a collapsable top hat for my tips. When I set up station I put it out (and seed it), and when I get to the point I need to empty it, I just collect the cash and put the hat on for a brief walk-around. Rinse-and-repeat.
I don't like collecting cash with people around, so putting the hat on gives the action some purpose. If I have an assistant, I have them collect the cash instead (when convenient) and continue one.
You can get a collapsable top hat for around $30 - I feel it looks better than a tip "jar" (imo). I generally try to buy a new one every year [of different print or design](tradition), and incorporate the old one into a costume.
