When I run into a scared child, I try to act like I'm afraid of the child, too. It usually calms them down - obviously, I'm not scary if I'm afraid of a little child.
Of course, that doesn't work when I find a frightened adult. Daisy and I were trying out our new outfits, and ran into a frightened adult in Wal-Mart. She covered up her face and ran away - and of course, we ran into her two or three more times before we finished our shopping! I've got no idea how to handle somebody like that, unless it involves hypnotherapy.
