You mentioned that you don't want the fabric top, but if you were able to cut out the top part and insert a piece of white cotton (being a natural fiber, it would wick away your sweat and keep you cool), it would no longer necessitate gluing it on.
The cotton would ensure structural integrity while letting you keep it on your head without any help from spirit gum.
And to match the white cotton to your skin, you can either dye it or use fabric paint. If you use dye, I've found that a combination of Rose Pink and Tan (from Rit) will make a nice neutral skin tone, but some folks have added a little of the Light Green if they are more olive-skinned. If you have more of a yellow tone to your skin, you can add some Peach to the Rose Pink and Tan.

Or, you could get a stretchy cotton skull cap to fit all around your head. Then cut the wig into the strip of fringe you want, and sew metal snaps around the inside. Sew the corresponding snaps to the cotton skull cap. Then, whenever the cap gets dirty, snap off the wig part and throw the cap in the washing machine. Since it's mostly cotton (with a little lycra for stretch) it should keep you cool. Just make sure that you dye the white cotton to match your flesh tone.
