View Full Version : Does anyone use marionettes
Texas Sprinkles 05-20-2010, 10:03 PM Im thinking about adding one to my act after seeing some utube videos do you think me dressed in clown will distract from the marionette or vice versa? any ideas or opions appreciated. Im trying really hard to get it all together and wanna have some specialties I have practiced with some home made marionettes and seem to do pretty well with them so thought it might be a good choice for me cause Im not good at majic, I dont sing (or at least no one wants to hear me sing), not co-ordinated to juggle or stilt walk exc exc. I do do the balloon animals but would like to add to it. ok Im rambling any help would be appreciated and/or if you know where to get or how to make a somewhat prolooking marionette let me know Thanks in advance
Häagen-Dazs 08-21-2010, 09:04 AM That's cute. I like it
Special K'z 08-21-2010, 10:01 AM Chopper was the first one to show me this you tube link to a cute marionette routine. May give you some ideas. YouTube - El Dia de los Muertos (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B5VZfs6zQr8)

Snoetje 08-21-2010, 04:29 PM I was thinking of using a marionnette too. I had a really awesome fluffy bird marionnette, but I lost him. :'(
I was also thinking of acting like I am a marionnette, would only work with someone else behind me pretending I have ropes of course.
I love the idea of another dancing little clown on strings.
Recently, I purchased a couple of little marionettes at an art fair for quite the reasonable price. I need to play with them some more and decide how to imbue them with character life of their own.
Oh, and I'm reminded of the guy who busks with marionettes around town:

This guy is SO cute! Out of stock? Boo-hoo!

These sites seem to have some interesting marionettes (including clowns):

It certainly seems like ebay is the place to go if you want to find interesting marionettes at a value price.
Now that I have my (three out of four are Mexican marionettes) all I can say is:
Me mucho gusto!
Each has a unique way in which it moves that has already begun to define it's breath and character.
Snoetje 08-28-2010, 07:13 AM Cool, I want a marionette too. :D

Tim is this the same one?
I can't especially discern if those are two separate companies or essentially one in the same. The one you linked to does, I believe, have some of the puppets which I bought at the aforementioned art fair.
This also seems to be a nice site:

Random Puppet Fact...
Bil Baird was from Mason City, Iowa. I got to see a large collection of his puppets this summer while in Mason City. If you are ever in northern Iowa, stop at the MacNider Art Museum to see the collection.

cortez 11-16-2010, 09:19 AM I have busked with marionettes for ten years in Januaray.
There was a suggestion or rather mention of a different puppet to go with
The marionette, and I highly recommend it. It gives your wrist a break and
It usually requires you perform at a different level.
Speaking of different level. I have always just plunked down my sound system and performed on the street corners of SF. My major complaint is that people cqnt see
My puppets. This is a major consideration with marionettes. The performance energy is down on the ground. Not a bad thing. Especially if you have ahand puppet up high, continuing or breaking up the plot line.

How to make a marionette alive and in the mean time being so much a marionette
Salvo The Clown 03-21-2011, 06:20 AM I was thinking of using a marionnette too. I had a really awesome fluffy bird marionnette, but I lost him. :'(
I was also thinking of acting like I am a marionnette, would only work with someone else behind me pretending I have ropes of course.
I think its a Great idea but why do you need someone with ropes for I can remember something like you're thinking done by Dick Van Dyke in one of his many films, plus if you have someone else with you you'd probably need a lot more money to cover two people wages and with money not being something there is plenty of! However should you ever get this together then I wish you every success as it is certainly different.
Incidentally we have a living statue type person here in England who dresses up as a clockwork Guardsman and whenever I've seen him he seems to keep the crowd amused.
hoopsie 04-30-2011, 03:33 PM I have never used marionettes, but I think it is a fantastic idea! I have a friend who makes them and does television shows in Canada. Her stuff is really great. She and her sister do the entire show, voices and all. Fun stuff!:applause::applause:
Zippy Zoo 05-03-2011, 10:47 PM I thought about having one to dance and do silly moves for me, since I really can't, but it seems the people in control of them are moving nearly as much in some cases. I'm just wondering if they require movement from your feet and legs or if it's optional. Do you think they can be used from a sitting position? Great idea! :applause:
Of course, you'd need a ton of practice!:o
If you can move your hand and arm you can move a marionette.
Just like a clown, a puppet will have it's own unique sense of movement and timing, based upon what works for the character with which you imbibe it.
hoopsie 05-05-2011, 03:12 PM Hi Zippy! I think i understand what you mean with all the movement and everything. Like I said before, I have some good friends who use the marrionnettes professionally. I have had a chance to try them myself, and they are not nearly as easy to use as one might expect. For starters, you have to control them from swinging to much, before you can start doing more detailed movement with their arms and legs, etc.....But I'm hardly saying any of this to discourage you. With some practice you could surely get a handle on things and have alot of fun with it!! Yay!!! :D:D:D:applause:
Zippy Zoo 05-05-2011, 04:59 PM Oh, I have no doubt they're difficult to learn! Really, so was juggling for me. Everything takes time and practice. I'm always wanting to learn new things, though, especially new clowny things and I don't mind if they take effort. In fact, this sounds like a lot of fun! :D
My biggest concern was that, since I'm slightly impared (read: disabled) tha I couldn't dance with them like the people in the videos. If tim says it won't be a problem, though, I'm sure it won't. 8-)
hoopsie 05-05-2011, 05:24 PM I think you will be great at it Zippy Zoo! :D:D:D
Zippy Zoo 05-05-2011, 05:57 PM Awww! Thank you!
