View Full Version : Eccentric artist character
tyanbe 05-27-2010, 10:42 AM According to the book, The Birthday Party Business: "A character clown can depict a jester, country bumpkin, wacky professor, eccentric artist, old sea captain, or any other profession. Any of these characters could be used to present a children's show in clowning, magic, storytelling, balloons, or whatever." I really like the eccentric artist idea. I've found lots of simple magic tricks dealing with colors and I've always loved art. Also, have the magic drawing board. So my question is this. How would an eccentric artist look? I can sew, so ideas will help me develop a unique look. All ideas are appreciated. Thank you. I love this forum.
P.S. Are there any eccentric artist character clowns out there?
There's a clown here called Artsy, who is essentially just that.
An eccentric artist might be a French pretentious type. Or an aloof urban hipster who attends Chicago's Columbia College. Sid Caesar had a character called "Progress Hornsby" who was a satire of of a musical artist of that era.
saphireSue 05-27-2010, 09:59 PM Also could look at the hippy area, there were Artist Colonies at one time.
Heeeeey, daddio..... you talking about who you talking about? <snaps>
Häagen-Dazs 05-27-2010, 10:40 PM That's cute. I like it.
Scruffy 05-28-2010, 05:43 AM Whew! I'm beat. That really took it out of me. I've used up my creative ideas for the day and must now retire to the bed. Good night.
The Swirly has left the building.
tyanbe 05-28-2010, 10:04 AM This is great. 70's bright bold colorful, artist smock, knickerbocker pants, splashes of paint, oversized beret... I'm starting to see it, I'm seeing it, I'm liking it, I'm loving it. I know that inside me is this wacky artist begging to come out and make the world laugh.

Of all the colors, what color do you think is my favorite?

Special K'z 05-28-2010, 04:56 PM You can research Artsy's threads to get some in-site into her character. Not that you would copy anybodies style it is just that it may give you some ideas to spark off of. I think Artsy was more into drawing caricatures, face painting and balloons rather than magic, anyway but you may get some ideas from any old photo's she may have stored on here if any. Sorry that she hasn't been around for a while but your posts are beginning to sound familiar.

Here is the link with a picture of her. http://www.clown-forum.com/party-clowning/6438-eating-hamburger-gonna-get-me-gig-marketing-5.html
Snoetje 05-28-2010, 06:43 PM Hmm, this might be of my interest as well.
Not for the look, but maybe artistic things to do...
Or maybe not, I'm already an artist the whole day. I could use my creativity another way (in designing my own costume or setting up a storytelling act for example).
Not sure yet.
Oh my, I'm so glad to read the sentence "if you only knew how shy I am when I'm not in costume!" I thought I was the only one and was surrounded by very social people!
Phew, what a relief.
I was almost thinking I couldn't become a clown because I'm shy, but this gives me hope. Maybe I'm not shy in costume as well, but I have to find that out yet.
Anyway, tyanbe, like I said I'm an artist myself and I know a lot other artists.
Artists are mostly very emotional and introvert types. They can't resist to draw/paint something when they have inspiration. If they wake up in the middle of the night with a brilliant idea, they can't sleep until their idea is putted somewhere, maybe a sketch.
I believe they're also not very well organised. You see sketches, unfinished works, paint and whatever he/she is working with everywhere when you enter their working area.
And they mostly hate sports. :p
I hope you can use this information.
Willy Nilly 05-28-2010, 11:17 PM maybe use the old saw of using your thumb for perspective and showing a sketch of your thumb? I see my foot in a paint bucket, too. Or a using a confetti paint pail.
Mulligan 05-29-2010, 10:09 PM You could be similar "Mr. Bainter the Painter" from Capt Kangaroo (if you are old enough to know who that is) with painter's overalls and painters cap with splotches of paint. However, I think you might like the smock with a giant beret and carrying an oversized painters palette.
Stringy Bean 05-30-2010, 06:02 PM Hmmm... an eccentric artist character. Why not cut your ear off, use a lobster for a telephone, surgicaly implant a clip into your skull to keep your wig straight, live in a brothel, enjoy bull fighting, drink your self into oblivion with absinthe and commit suicide.
It should be easy except I don't quite understand how it might be kids entertainment.
Häagen-Dazs 05-30-2010, 06:49 PM That's cute. I like it.
And Barry Daft could never accuse American clowns of being uninteresting again!
Alpha Clown 05-31-2010, 08:47 AM Art, So I seen that one clown here that did or does stained glass, and the one girl who draws. I make cookie jars, face jugs out of clay, incorp formed leather to both glass and clay, green screen and photoshop, and sell it all with clown skills,
