Ronlin Foreman: Radically Funny
Saturday, September 2 – Sunday, September 3 from 10 AM – 2 PM (2 day workshop)
$200.00

A provocative teacher and director, Ronlin Foreman is Director of Pedagogical Research and Master Clown Teacher at the Dell'Arte International School of Physical Theatre in California. Zany and poignant, Foreman's uniquely confrontational and poetic brand of physical theatre has been featured at major international Movement, Theatre and Clown festivals in Mexico, Spain, Canada and the U.S.

Foreman's hallmarks are his character (drawn from the fool, the clown, and the grotesque) and his ability to play profoundly with comedy, and irreverently with the profound, and outrageously with an audience.

In this workshop, on day one, students will learn "The Loop,” exploring repetition as an organic base for "the gag"; revelation of character; development of logic and theme; the setup, interruption and payoff (the rule of three). On day two, the workshop explores "The Abyss" and "The Enigma,” encountering the limits of one's knowing, comfort and willingness. Engaging the impossible is the dynamic realm of the clown and the beginning of glorious failures as a pathway to laughter

Philippe Gaulier: Jeu and Clown Workshop
Thursday, September 7 – Sunday, September 10 from 10 AM – 4 PM (4 day workshop)
$500

Philippe Gaulier is a world-renowned teacher/writer and director with a distinctive approach to the world of performance. Currently based in Paris, France he runs his own international theatre school, Icole Philippe Gaulier, where, each year, he welcomes students from up to 36 different countries. Founded twenty-four years ago, it continues to produce enriched theatre artists that take their craft back to their many corners of the world. Theatre artists that have trained with M. Gaulier include Oscar-winning actors Geoffrey Rush (Shine), and Roberto Benigni (Life is Beautiful), Emma Thompson (Sense and Sensibility), Helena Bonham-Carter (Fight Club/Big Fish) and the very popular satirist Ali-G.

London's internationally acclaimed, cutting-edge theatre company Compliciti, under the direction of Simon McBurney and Marcello Magni, was founded on and guided by the principles at the heart of Philippe Gaulier's teachings. Philippe Gaulier does not teach a style of theatre, but an approach to theatre that allows an actor to find his or her own style. Gaulier's approach, puts a great emphasis on character development; however, play creation, writing and directing are also fundamental aspects of Gaulier's belief in giving birth to unique creative artists.

I'm a Chicagoan. There is plenty of stuff here culturally on a similar level, but not necessarily this quality of a thing with these sorts of names in the realm of clowning. Certainly, there are some excellent clowns around here and some good things happpening. Occasionally, a couple of the biggest names will come through town and offer a workshop, even. In fact, that is the benefit of living in a place like Chicago; it attracts and fosters such. "Orgainizing it yourself" is a lot bigger project than you realize, however, and much more expensive that you might realize. There would also be a concern as to who and how many it would attract, how you'd get the word out to people, and who beyond clowns would be your target audience. In NY, you have some people who are based there and a natural audience, so it is a bit easier to do; though probably still a signifigant project for something like this.

oh so thats cool i know some people in chicago...no, not clowns.....PEOPLE......and yeah im aware of what it takes but that doesnt mean its impossible.....if a bunch of you want it then you divide the work and the job gets done before you know it ;) as for the cost??? pool some money together......make balloons and do facepainting in parks, street corners,......even the subway!!! charge based on complexity of the task and explain it goes to help better yourselves as clowns to help serve the community..........it could be a biiiiiig hit

That all sounds fine and good, but the practical reality of it is still MUCH more difficult and contextual to concrete situations. Also, frankly, the kinds of clowns who are likely to want to go to events like these and study from people like this (I hope you understand just who these lecturers and teachers are - if you don't FIND OUT!) aren't necessarily the facepainters and balloon twisters. They're more likely to be the variety artists and theater oriented crowd. You're right, it's not impossible, but it takes the right people and circumstances along with a great deal of commitment, money, and dedicated interest to get something like that done. Avner was in town a couple of months ago, for instance. Some people who would have went to his workshop didn't know about it, others couldn't make it, still others have no idea who he even is. It wasn't full, I don't think (even though the limit for the class was only like 20) and it really wasn't expensive; plus it was right here in town. If this is what happens for one good weekend workshop with one top level guy, how much more would have to be done for something on the scale of what's being advertized in NY here? Similarly, a couple of other recent clowning/family entertainment workshops which were offerred in Chicago didn't have the kind of enrollment necessary to really make this sort of thing fly, even though they were well priced and with excellent instructors. So, again, it's a matter of will anybody show up and who's going to carry the cost? Still, I'm happy when somebody notable comes through town. There have definitely been excellent opportunities of late, precisely because of Chicago being a center of theater, variety arts, family entertainment, and clowning. I apprecaite the efforts of those who put these endevors together and try to take advantage of as much as possible when I'm able. As such, I have ready access to a LOT more resources and training possibilities than the average hometown clown. Ultimately, however, this project advertized on the thread really is the kind of thing that can probably only be done on such a scale as this in NYC. You don't realize how lucky you are to live in and be from that area. Take advantage of as much of it as you can.

Actually this has been amazing to get all of these people in the same space, in such a short amount of time. We plan on making this a yearly event and keeping the level of teachers. One thing to think about is an educational grant. About half of the teachers are from out of the USA (Shiner, Gaulier, Morrison) this potentially means money from your local area. The Brick is also non-profit so that would help too. Hope to see you at the parade. PS-NY is helpful becuase everyone has 1 friend with a couch in nyc.

There's enough room for a couch in those NY apartments? :-P

Glad to hear that it may become an annual thing. If it does, it could be something BIG.
