OH, how I WISH SO MUCH that Christians, especially those in church-based ministries, would put more effort into making their productions more professional!

People need to be shown that the EFFORT matches the desire. All the sincerity in the world doesn't make a clown show (or anything else) great. Only talent and hard work and the BEST equipment and planning make for great shows when it comes to impressing people. If you need to attract people to you and your show, the look, the gags and the whole thing have to be sharp.

Doesn't need to be a million bucks, but it needs to play that way. It needs to be the best it CAN be, rather than dime-store and cheap. Right, Knute? I think you've said things like that before. So have others...

Have you checked out any of Roly Bains work? I'm a firm non believer but love to watch him perform he is an ordained Minister C of E I think, but his clown routines are just that Clown routines first and there's always a small religious message but you get so swept along by the routine it's fun for religious and non religious alike to watch.

Christian denominations...There's only two Kinds of Clowns in the World today. The Ones Saved and the ones that are going to get saved...Christianity is not a denomination, you are saved or your not saved. It's that black or white...the Only thing I can take with me in the End is some body Else...Mark 16: 15

Just because you can speak "christian ease" in a gag, skit, or magic patter doesn't make it a christian any thing...if your not saved, your not saved. A christian is Christ like, And if your not a christian and just going through the motions to be part of something...then it will not have the conviction of real Christianity...Christian Clowning is not a game that any old or young clown can play. It's not christian, if your not sold out to Jesus, Salvation, and the Forgiveness of Sin.

Christian Clowning is not doing clowning for Clown sake...it's dying to self and making Jesus Christ Lord of every thing we do or say...if your not Saved how can you do that...?

One great thing about non christians wanting to join a christian Alley is you can witness to them, Love on them and tell them about Jesus...

If you are really in a christian Alley ask if you can open your meetings with Prayer...maybe share a Bible verse two or three...

You need to ask every one the Hard Questions are we a Christian Alley, that is Christ Centered...

Then if every one agrees to that...your Alley needs to be Christ Centered, No Compromise...

I was not always a Christian...

I practiced Wicca for 25 years. I was a third degree high Priest in a skyclad collective training Coven. I was sold out to Wicca the Goddess and her consort. 12 to 15 years ago some one told me about the Love of a Almighty God who payed the price for my sins. I was trying to cut my Kharma by doing good and learning the lessons so I could evolve Spiritually and get off the Kharmic wheel of Life. We called this the Great Work....... the real meaning of the third degree initiation. No matter how hard I tried My good works were doing nothing for me. I still had all my insecurities and fears, we called this facing your shadow. One day some one told me about the Love of God, I prayed and ask Jesus to forgive me of all my sins. The Love I felt at that very moment was some thing I had never felt before. I no longer had to try to cut my Kharma. I no longer had to try to know Spirit. I instantly Knew I was in the presence of a Holy Being.......I had never known this feeling of Love and well Being Like I did at that instant. God has revealed him self to me in the Person of Jesus Christ of the Holy BiBle. All I want to do ultimatly is be in the presence of this Love and bring others into right relationship with God so they can know this Love and forgiveness of there sin. What I was trying to do through religion (Wicca) God did it for me . All I needed to do was to let go and stop trying. Jesus payed a debt he did not owe, I owed a dept I could not pay. The Church is the People of God...not the building we meet in, we need to get the Church out of our Church buildings and into the Market Place where the non believers are...

Mark 16:15 Preaching a message in a form that will help people listen, or in our case Watch...is a platform for the Gospel.

Clown 2: No. I was reading palms in the Bible.

Clown 2: Palms. You left out the "P".

Clown 1: The "P" is quiet.

Clown 2: Okay. P-alms (say the "P" quietly and "alms" loudly).

Clown 1: No I mean the "P" is silent.

Clown 2: Listen if you have come up here to start trouble you can just…

Clown 1: No that’s not what I’m trying to do. The proper pronunciation of P-S-A-L -M-S is psalms. Say it as if you were leaving the "P" off.

Clown 2: (looks funny at Clown 1) You just can’t pretend that the "P" is not there!

Clown 1: Okay, never mind. Please continue with your story.

Clown 2: I was reading palms when I came across in palm 51 verse 7 it says, "Cleanse me with his soap, and I will be clean; wash me, and I will be whiter than snow".

Clown 1: Hyssop.

Clown 2: What?

Clown 1: It’s called hyssop, not his soap.

Clown 2: What’s hyssop? Could you scrub my back? I can’t reach it.

Clown 1: Sure. (Clown 1 stands behind Clown 2 but where the audience can see. Clown 2 might bend over slightly). Hyssop is a plant that was used to sprinkle water or blood for religious cleansing. You can also prepare it as an infusion. Hyssop will soothe colic. Do you have colic?

Clown 2: No I don’t have a cow lick. My hair is fine.

Clown 1: Not cow lick, it’s colic! Colic is mostly associated with infants and stomach pain. Does your tummy hurt?

Clown 2: No, I don’t think so.

Clown 1: Hyssop can also improve digestion and eliminate flatulence.

(Clown 1 and Clown 2 both look up at the audience in alarm or panic. Clown 2 kicks Clown 1 out of the way)

Clown 1: What the big idea?

Clown 2: Nothing! What?

Clown 1: Hyssop is also an excellent nerve tonic which I need right about now.

Clown 2: Well that’s great and everything but I need to be cleansed where I can be whiter than snow.

Clown 1: Psalm 51 was a prayer of repentance from King David after Nathan came to him and confronted David of his sins. Like David we can make that prayer our own Prayer. Our hearts can be black with sin and there can be absolutely nothing that we can do about the darkness dwelling inside of us. But Jesus has already taken care of that, He died on the cross, He shed his blood. Jesus gave up His life, all we have to do is say "I believe in you Jesus, forgive me for my sins." Only then will our hearts be whiter than snow.

Clown 2: So what we are really saying is, " Wash me in your washing powder of forgiveness and I’ll come out clean, scrub me with the brush of grace and I’ll have a snow-white life."

Clown 1: That pretty much sums it up right there.

Clown 2: Speaking of scrubbing I believe you missed a spot right here (pointing to back).

Clown 1: (Grabs scrub brush) I’ll show you where there’s a spot missing!

(Clown 1 chases Clown 2 off stage)

(This gag would be a good opportunity for slapstick. You have a bucket, a scrub brush with a long handle if so desired. Lots of ideas come to mind)

SETUP/PROPS
A big poster with the ten commandments written on them (could look like stone tablets) saying at the top "God's standards for Life"
A few balloons with a sign that says, "Balloons for sale $1 each"
A big Bible
SCRIPT
PART I:

Clown 1 Walks in with a big Bible under his arm. He sees the Ten Commandments and mentally goes through each one (looks at it or points at it, then thinks about it and nods his head affirmatively that yes he's kept that one). Clown 1 is showing a very self righteous attitude.

Clown 2 Walks in from the other side of the stage and sees clown 1.

Clown 1 "Yep, I've got that one covered, that one too …. Wow, I'm on my way to heaven. I don't know about you (pointing at clown 2), but I've (pointing at himself) kept ALL the commandments."

Clown 2 Shakes his head slightly at clown 1's self righteous attitude and says, "Hey man, did you realize that the Bible says in James 2:10 ‘If you break one commandment, you've broken them all.'? Gods law, his ten commandments (points to the Ten Commandments sign) is just to point out our sin, that none of us can keep it all perfectly all the time. It shows that we need Jesus. In order to get to heaven, we have to first admit that we are a sinner. Romans 7:7 says, ‘I would not have known what sin was except through the law (points again to the Ten Commandments).'"

Clown 1 Puffs up his chest even higher and says, "I am definitely NOT a sinner. I've kept all those commandments."

Clown 2 Walks away shaking his head saying, "Good luck." He walks over and sets up his sign saying, "Balloons for sale, $1 each".

PART II:

Clown 1 Walks over to clown 2 selling balloons and sets down his Bible in the center of the stage. While clown 2 isn't looking, clown 1 "steals a balloon". The clown 1 turns his back toward clown 2 and looks toward the audience to begin blowing up the balloon.

Clown 2 Finally notices clown 1 and says, "Hey, did you take one of my balloons?"

Clown 1 Turns around trying to hide the balloon behind his back saying "No, no, I didn't take anything!" but accidentally lets the balloon go and it flies into the audience.

Clown 2 Angry, he steps over toward clown 2 pointing his finger at the chest of clown 1 saying, "You did take one of my balloons … you know what that makes you?…. a LYING THIEF!!!!!"

Clown 2 Stomps back to where he was selling balloons shaking his head saying, "Liar, thief …. and he thought he could keep all the commandments?" He sits down and begins reading a book.

Clown 1 At the same time, clown 1 realizes his sin and looks at the 10 commandments sign sadly realizing he's just broken two of them. He says "I've just broken two of the Ten Commandments ... Do not steal, do not lie. I thought I was a good person! But, I'm still able to keep the other eight commandments. Surely, the Bible doesn't mean that if I break one commandment its as if I've broken them all. I bet Jesus will still let me into heaven with 80% correct!"

PART IV:

Clown 3 (the opposite sex of the clown 1 & 2) Walks across the stage.

Clown 1 Notices clown 3 and whistles at her. Clown 1 tries to get clown 3's attention by whistling, winking, blowing kisses etc. Clown 1 looks out towards the audience and gives a knowing look like yeah; she looks good and gives the thumbs up sign.

Clown 3 Stops and talks to clown 2 selling balloons.

Clown 1 As clown 1 turns back around to begin following clown 3 again, he "trips" over his Bible that he laid in the center of the stage earlier. He stands up hopping on one foot and holding his other foot as if he stubbed his toe.

Clown 2 He has been watching all of this and stands up saying, "Hey, it serves you right for looking lustfully at my sister!!! In that book you just tripped over, Jesus said that if you look at a woman lustfully, you've committed adultery in your heart ….. that makes you a LYING, THEIVING, ADULTERER AT HEART!!!" Clown 3 takes his sister off stage shaking his head and giving clown 1 a you can't do anything right look.

PART V:

Clown 1 Looks up to heaven saying, "God, I thought I was good enough to get into heaven. But, I was wrong. (He hangs his head) I realize that I will never be able to fully live up to YOUR standards (pointing to the Ten Commandments). I realize that I am a lying thieving, adulterer at heart …. how could someone like me get into heaven? (He sighs loudly) "What did the other guy say earlier …. that the Ten Commandments just show me that I'm a sinner and need Jesus? Yeah, that's what he said. (He gets on his knees)

Jesus, I realize that I am a sinner and can't get to heaven on my own. Please forgive me for all the wrong things I've done. I want to have a true relationship with you. Help me to love you with all my heart, soul, mind and strength and to obey you. Thank you for showing me the true way to heaven. Amen."

He stands up looking relieved and happy. He now looks out to the audience. "How about you? Have you ever told a lie or stolen something, even if it was small? I realized its impossible to get to heaven by trying to be good. If any of you, like me, realize you are a sinner, and are truly sorry for what you've done then you can pray the same prayer I prayed.

Jesus, I realize that I am a sinner and can't get to heaven on my own. Please forgive me for all the wrong things I've done. I want to have a true relationship with you. Help me to love you with all my heart, soul, mind and strength and to obey you. Thank you for showing me the true way to heaven. Amen."

It's not easy being a Christian, but the Bible says that only those who obey what God wants for their lives will go to heaven. Wow, I need to start reading my Bible more so that I know how I can love God more and obey him every day. I better go get started …. bye!!!

Alex the Jews used to be persecuted now christians being teased. I know for a fact the Jews believe that Jesus was raised from the dead by the Great I AM they just do not believe He was God's son. This is a place where people come to learn the art of clowning no matter what beliefs they have Jew, Christian, Atheist, Muslim, Hindu or Satanist. Clowning if done in skits or free style has a place in all walks of life from child to 120 years old. There is more and more evidence found every day that everything in the Bible is true. I do not usually get into these things. I respect everyone and their beliefs, may not be mine but they are still here for the same thing. To learn to be a better CLOWN. Whether for hospitals, schools, fire prevention, streets, circuses, or church. We should not condemn anyone for their beliefs.

I just dont get those skits at all. I read them and re-read them and then read them a few more times, wondering whether I had missed something. I have to say, I have been left rather perplexed and mystified. You have mentioned on a number of occaisions,Did anyone else think that Mel Gibson's remake of the 'Life of Brian' wasn't nearly as funny as the original?

Well I am sorry but from reading that, I had assumed there might be some humour in your skits. From reading your 100 plus post so far, I had already surmised, I was not going to split my sides rolling around laughing. But I had been expecting to, if not get a laugh, at least see you attempting to make people laugh. Well I just don't understand them at all. Were they actually even meant to be funny, or has it all gone completely over my head? Have you ever performed these skits in public Rodney? What kind of audience was it and how did these skits go down? I just can't get a sense that anyone would ever find them funny as they are now. If God had sex with Mary without her consent then that's rape. Alternatively, Mary consented in which case she committed adultery (breaking God's seventh commandment). Now considering Jesus had a rapist for a father or an adulterer for a mother, how can he be so preachy about things?
If you would like some help putting the funny in, I could probably come up with some great lines on lying, thieving and adultery.

Barry I've seen funny christian skits and some that just told a story. I guess it's like British humor you either love it as I do or don't get it.

No, Love, it's not Christians being teased... it's people getting snarky because some self-appointed preachers won't lay off the black/white, turn/burn diatribes. Teasing is meant in good fun. I KNOW for a FACT that that's some of the ripest bull-hooey I've ever smelled. Chapter and verse, please, from ANY writings by ANY recognized Jewish, NOT converted-to-Jesus-Jewish, but exclusively JEWISH, author/contributor of a theological or socio-historical text.

In plain English, show us where, in clear language, it says ANYWHERE that "THE JEWS" believe that Jesus was raised from the dead. First, there's the problem with the fact that the vast majority of Jewish scholars and theologians don't even believe any resurrections will occur until the end of days. Second, and more apropos to this discussion, there's the absolutely INANE and idiotic concept that "THE Jews", as some kind of homogeneous group, believe ANYTHING unanimously, ESPECIALLY as it relates to the savior-god of an oppressive Gentile religious group. I need to ask you: do "THE blacks" or "THE Arabs", such generally-defined groups, ALL believe anything exactly the same? This idea of "THE Jews" is ridiculous, whether it refers to their religious beliefs or their politics, which all are varied, diverse and not easily categorized, except by you.

Oh, and in case you're wondering, I spent two years in Torah and Talmudic studies searching out the various positions of various sects of Judaism concerning Jesus in specific and the Messianic idea in general. This occurred while I kept a kosher home, shopped and ate and spent considerable research time in some very ethnically and culturally Jewish neighborhoods. Where have you gotten your info about "THE Jews" from? My guess is some evangelical book that purports to teach your kind how to "reach 'the Jews'".

It's also a place where threads about CLOWNING can get hijacked by people who don't CARE about clowning. Also, clowning isn't done in "skits"; boys and girls who go to summer camp do "skits" by the campfire.

Are there two people in your head, fighting over who gets to speak next? One minute, you're on the Jewish-evangelism thing, then you're into how wonderful clowning is, then all of a sudden you're back into trying to prove the Bible's veracity. Actually, there is more and more evidence every day that many things recorded in the Bible, specifically the Hebrew Bible (your "old testament") may have had some grounding in historical events or personages, but there is NO evidence being found anywhere that proves any of the supernatural occurrences of the Bible. Someone finding an artifact that mentions King David doesn't prove anything about killing giants. An artifact that mentions a person named Eliyahu ("Elijah" in the corrupted English) doesn't prove that someone was whisked off to heaven in a fiery chariot.

That's a good attitude to have, except that you just DID "get into these things" and made some sweeping statements that show that you care very little about anyone's beliefs but your own. Perhaps they were made rashly, but I see them as baby-steps toward trying to be as forward about your agenda as Rodney has been. My advice is not to attempt that.

You're right. There ARE people out here who want to be better clowns. There are also people out here who want to take every opportunity they can to push their beliefs around others who have made it plain that such proselytizing is unwelcome and insensitive. They make it clear that they have no other agenda; certainly not the goal of funnier and more relevant and impactful performance in the art of clown.

To insist that other people need to believe in ONE and ONLY ONE interpretation of a religious text (as certain others have done REPEATEDLY) is, by default, a condemnation of other people's personal belief, whatever it may be. Jumping into a thread like this one and contributing NOTHING to a discussion about clowning, but instead throwing in your coinage concerning Jesus and the authenticity of the Bible, you very ably demonstrated that the beliefs of others mean little, if nothing, to you either.

This is not the Forum for religious debate. You don't want me to introduce you around at the forum where I DO get into religious discussions with hard-line, literalist evangelical Christians. You wouldn't last a single thread-post there.

I've had deep, meaningful discussions about music and movies on RELIGIOUS forum threads. I come to the CLOWN FORUM and have to listen to people insult, marginalize and condescendingly pity some people that I have come to respect, admire and, in some cases, grow rather fond of, in their own unique ways. Love, dear, please... don't try to help Rodney out. This won't get any nicer.

Oh, and RE: those gags or routines that Rodney posted... they simply wouldn't PLAY in a room full of people that don't understand your evangelical Christian lingo. Anyone who tried those bits with a non-Christian audience would be getting, at best, crickets instead of laughs. There was nothing FUNNY about the skits, and if you have to SPELL OUT that "this would be a great chance for slapstick", then you obviously built the dialogue around your "message" and not around a core of "intro/build-up/conflict/humorous resolution" that is underscored by exaggerated movement and emphasized contrasts in characters.

If I have offended anyone I did not wish to offend however I will not after this comment. I have been to retreats that were taught by Jewish men and women who also believe Jesus is God's Son. I also am very fond of different people on this forum.

Another thing that has to be Done is warming up your audience...

This is also called anchoring to a response...

If I do a running gag though out my Routine and that running gag is getting laughs...

Most of the time...then just by doing that gag will bring laughs even if nothing else is funny in the Routine...

If my character is funny...I can do things over and over and it will anchor people watching my Routine, respond in laughter...

This is used all the time in Comedy...

In N.L.P [Neuro-Linguistic Programming] anchoring to a response...

I have told a joke, performed a running gag during a Routine and rang a bell or shouted out peanutebutter...as a running gag...at the time of the Routine that people where laughing the Hardest...

After about two or three times of doing that...

To get the anchored response of Laughter all you need to do is ring the same bell, or shout out peanutebutter...and people in the audience will respond...

Warming up your audience helps with the anchored response of laughter...and using something like a bell or word like peanutebetter...is a great trigger

If you can be body funny any gag can be made to be funny...

It's not always the lines that makes a gag, Hilarious, it is the way the clown respond in character...


By the way anchoring to a response to get laughter is use by most professional comics...


A gags method of delivery is not always based on it's lines, but more on the stylized movement of the Clown..

Rodney if you have not seen the clown communion on you tube please do so there are a few laughs and tears. I watched it without sound the first time I did laugh and I also cried the message is clear. It is better with sound. I hope to do it soon with another clown.
