Hi there,
I was asked a while back to clown for some adults at a party (Non sexual related) but i turned it down.

Not becuase it was for adults, but because I know NOTHING about clowning for adults.

Does anyone here cater specifically to adults or HAS anyone clowned for adults?
Where do you start? Dont adults think (In general) that clowns are for kinds and are NOT funny?

I also find that more adults are afraid of clowns than children.

I have a friend that works at a nursing home and she is having me come out there soon and wants it to be a quarterly gig. They love clowns!
I also think that more adults love clowns than not. When I did a community picnic recently, the focus was on the kids, but they were outnumbered by adults like 5 to 1. The adults enjoyed us coming to their tables and just being silly and such. I just start gabbing and funny stuff comes to mind. I got a little plastic plant that plays music and the flowers move to the beat. It's a big band sound and it's too fun when I dance with it to make my entrance. People seem to gravitate to it, even if they may not act like it at first.

I love clowning for adults and I love clowning for kids but my favorite audience is when they are together. There is nothing better than an all age audience. The presence of children help the adults open up and play. Once you have set the tone the adults then help you keep it on track. Great fun :D

Welcome aboard Picaburu!
Yea, it looks like its a one way story here. Adults need catering for as much as children.

I done a show @ a nursing home where my wife worked and they loved it. I did a magic show and done balloon animals, told some silly doctor and nurse jokes like "I came in here and that nurse Jean was shouting out flu,rabbies,etc... and they said oh she likes to call all the shots around here.

Our group loves to do adult shows. Sometimes they are older folks, sometimes not so old. But they all seem to enjoy what we do - some skits, silly magic, sing along with old songs "Let me Call you Sweetheart", and play goofy games. It's fun when we have both adults and children, too. Then they tend to play off each other and enjoy laughing together!!

I have found that it dosen't matter weather it's adults or children i do the same thing at both. I worked in nursing homes for years and the people there are just big kids. However when i have done an adult party the only thing i might do different is when doin magic we can make underware appear or disappear. other wise i don't change a thing. People that like clowns will enjoy anything you do and love it. It dosen't matter what age the kids are. Good Luck

You have to be very smart to appear that stupid. Someone told me that years ago and it is so true. The best example that leaps to mind is "Third Rock" with John Lithgow. The energy, comedy techniques, and character put into this show made it a hit. And make no mistake about it...that is clowning at it's best. And that is what it takes to clown for an all adult audiance. Just 'acting like a kid' will not cut it.
It is great fun performing for adults. Just be sure you have a plan, back up plan, and improv skills in your pocket.

BTW..."Third Rock" is now on TV land if anyone missed it. I like to watch it while I get ready to do a gig. It energizes me.

I'm surprised we don't get invited to do more parties for adults. Someday, when I turn 45 (many, many years from now), I would LOVE to have a clown at my party.

I love doing adult parties. I have a blast making silly hats for them and they get a blast making fun of each other. When ya get right down to it were all just big overgrown kids!

I've found doing magic is actually easier with adults. They are better at respecting personal boundaries. They won't be in your face when you do the trick and they won't grab props without asking.

They also take better care of balloon creations.

I do two types of adult magic performances. One is just a show with Comedy Magic ( Can be double minded presented if they want ), Musical Clown gag ( With participation & dress up ), Balloon routine ( Four partner balloon competion ), Ventriloquist and one or two Adult partner games.
The other one is a three hour evening where performances is breaked up into around about 20 minutes each with 10 to 15 minutes break inbetween. This include the above show preformance and stuff like my Thruth/Dare/Joker/Personality game which runs the whole evening with coloured clothespegs, karaoke, dance or drinking games, partner & group competition games, and acting games.
There's also a dressup evening which is catered for and where somebody was the murderer, they all here to find the murderer.

I don't think that clowns are applicable for adults. They see clowns as bore.

I guess it depends on the clown

It's all about connection. If a clown is simply perceived as kid stuff and doesn't engage adults, then it will never be taken seriously.

In my clowning, I often for a dual level outreach. I want something simple enough to just tickle the funny bone of an innocent child. But I simultaneously want there to be another level of depth which the thoughtful adult might take notice of and be touched.

It also depends on the adults. Some adults LOVE clowns. Other adults don't know that they love clowns until they are entertained and engaged by a clown.

That was what I was going to say, but there is also a third variable that could add a bit more fun, but has the potential to be a lot more dangerous. And that is "How drunk are the adults?"

Some adults are boring, some clowns are boring. Throw in a dash of booze, and it could start out getting loose and end up being down-right hazardous.

So be careful at adult parties. I'd take kids on a sugar-rush over adults on a keg-stand any day.

In my endeavors with birthday parties, one thing I constantly encounter is the parents wanting to get in line to get face painted or ballooned. This is usually impractical when the party is only planned around so many children with only so much time to do it in. Usually though I will say, if there is time at the end of the party I will make them a balloon or face painting, whatever they ask for and sometimes I can do it. But at the same time, when I do the magic show, most of the parents want to watch with the children and sometimes the jokes go over the heads of the children and are caught by the adults, which gives me great pleasure in seeing it. I like to play with the parents as much as the children when the parents are all into having the clown around. Sometimes the parents are much more entertained than the children are when it comes to patter between them and me. It makes me feel good to know I have EVERYONE laughing by the time I leave.

Absolutly Butterscotch, that I find myself you have to do if you find adults is watching to. They are the one's that is going to book you again and pay the money. So when they have to decide, what to do for the next party, they already know they enjoyed it aswell, and it will be easier to spend the money on you and not on something else. You just need to get the kids to make some nice noise and participate well, then the adults will feel the kids enjoyed it aswell. Masks, balloons and ventriloquist puppets always attract all ages.

OH yes and BUBBLES are great for the littlest of participants. I have this bubble gun made by "Little Tikes" shaped like a dog that sends out streams of bubbles forever. They also have other types of characters like a purple cow or a green dinosaur. One of the easiest things at a birthday party to do!
