View Full Version : Clown shoes makeover
Gumball 02-03-2007, 06:56 PM I found 2 pairs of leather converse shoes (red and orange) size 15 at the thrift store. I thought it would look funny to wear one of each. When I tried them with my costume though, they didn't look right at all - too manish and clunky (what did I expect a size 15 shoe to look like-delicate?) I found a cool new product at my local craft store called "sharpie paint markers" - they are not the regular sharpies, but are an oil based paint. They were about 2.00 each.
This is what they looked like before:

This is what they looked like after their makeover:

I used grosgrain rainbow ribbon for laces and added some frilly decorations which are actually girls hair ties.
I'll let you know how that paint holds up.
o Gumball o

Gumball 02-03-2007, 09:51 PM I'm so thankful that I don't really wear a size 15...these are some big wonkin shoes!!!!!!! But to think that someone has feet that big.........
Shoq T. Clown 02-03-2007, 09:57 PM my feet are size 12
Shoq T. Clown 02-03-2007, 09:59 PM hey gumball... can you post a pic with the whole costume on? no need for make-up really. have you thoght about a european auguste style clown? you could use the same make-up... wig or no wig...
KidzJam 02-05-2007, 03:31 PM Awesome!
Are these very heavy? We need to get some durable clown shoes for cheap, and being quite crafty, this might be the best route for us to go. Since they're so much bigger than your foot, are they uncomfortable to walk in for a longer period of time? You did such a great job, what does the whole costume look like?

Vivi-Ann 05-31-2007, 03:51 PM great shoes!!! great idea!!!!!
Fifi D. Clown 05-31-2007, 06:30 PM Those shoes are great! Those paiint sharpies seem like they would be good to "clown up" some other items as well (balloon pump, tote bags, etc.)
Do they have a strong paint smell? How long does it take to dry?

The paint does not have a stong smell. It took about 10 minutes to dry on the shoes. The paint has held up well on the leather, but it tends to show wear on the sole especially in the toe area. It is easy to touch up the scuffs, though. The markers are ideal to use on nonporus surfaces (since the leather is sealed, it is nonporus)
There was a small leather area on the shoes which were not sealed and the paint soaked in like a sponge! I haven't tried the paints on anything else.
DavidHawkins 08-05-2010, 05:09 AM The made-up shoes look perfect pair of clown shoes. This is a great idea to actually do up a simple Adidas or a Converse.
