View Full Version : Who made your costume?
MercyMe 09-19-2004, 03:24 PM Just curious, where did your costume come from? Did you design it yourself? Did you sew it yourself? Did a friend sew it? A clown costume designer?
Mine originated with a a clown costume pattern. It was made with Organza and silky fabrics. Not what I wanted but I loved the shape! It took me a couple weeks of puttting together fabric samples before finding the combination I liked. Then I revamped the pattern. That took a couple more days, sketching out how it should be cut out. The sewing didn't take long at all, just about a day. It is a lot of fun, bright, flashy, clowny!
Gilbert 09-19-2004, 03:57 PM Mine was part home made and part bought. The trousers I had to get my wife to make and the blue coat was a dressing gown that I adjusted myself. The rest was easy to find so I bought them.
saphireSue 09-19-2004, 05:46 PM My first I hated, it was thrown together last min. as we had problem with enough clowns, and I had been directing but not clowning, made by a clown pattern. I went to a conference in which a popular clown costumer was there selling already made outfits. She does great work but I sew and after looking at them realized I could do that and save a great deal, so I designed my own, used newspaper to make pattern, but lately I've been considering become Sallybang with pink long braided hair, overall, southern hick, auguste, for birthday parties. My personalily leads more to white face but making sure skin doesn't show, the costuming can get a lttle hot on long days and the new auguste face using powder in place of the auguste creme is much quicker to apply and remove.
Scruffy 09-19-2004, 06:05 PM I've got a better pictue of me in full costume. If I can figure out how I'll get a picture or at least a link.

Jobee 10-04-2004, 09:03 PM Heh, I took my old uniform from a movie theater and had a lady from Wal-Mart's fabric department sew on some patches and made my costume. Even when I made the switch from hobo to auguste I kept 90% of my costume and changed the shirt.
mr_buckaroo 10-04-2004, 11:37 PM ive put most of my costume together my self. good will has been a good resorce in the past for me. i do have a rodeo clown friend of mine that has a mom that sews and might be doin a new shirt for me if i can find a fabric that catches my eye
ashes 11-17-2004, 10:41 PM Ah, the joys of costumes.
You can find or make store-bought costumes but I always have preferred
to build my own.
It's hard for me to go shopping for regular work clothes because I end up
with my "clown eyes" on and buy stuff that, come Monday morning, I say
"Do I really want to wear THAT to work?"
Goodwill, CCA and other thrift stores are the ticket - go in and look for some
of the ugliest, most mis-matched items you can find.
Remember that too big and too small are funny, as are stripes with polka-
dots or whatever.
Also remember, it should be a work-in-process. When you find a new
item that works as part of your costume, by all means incorporate it!
It's sad that I'm a tramp clown and wear more subdued clothes, because I love
the zaniest stuff. Someday, I'll have to create an Auguste character!

Jubilee 11-19-2004, 07:37 PM I started out with a costume of just oversized clothes. Then I went to a convention and picked up a shirt, socks, gloves, hat, wig, etc. I was set! The only thing that isn't bought is an old pair of jeans.
