View Full Version : Hello over here......
Kickback 10-09-2004, 10:55 AM Good day to all,
I have moved from the Into forum to here to ask a couple of Newbie questions.
First: Balloons, what is a good brand that is balance between durability and price.
Second: Make-up,(everytime I think of that I think of the guy running onto stage with the big powder puff and whaming the person saying "Make-up), what is a good brand that you all like.
"Make-up" ..................................WHAM............ .....
Gilbert 10-09-2004, 11:53 AM Most clowns around here seem to go for Ben Nye or Mehron. Personally I use Mehron grease paint. I just find it easier to put on makeup with a brush. I tend to think makes are not as important as shades and types. These are a matter of personal preference. There is no real shortcut here you will need to experiment for yourself. When you find what works for you, stick to it :D
Scruffy 10-09-2004, 03:30 PM There are three main brands of makeup:
Ben Nye
Mehron
Proface
ALL are very good. I use Steins. I've had it forever. And there is so much that I don't want to throw it all away when It's still good. I use the Mehron No sweat to help keep me from sweating and to help keep my nose from falling off. I Do use the Ben Nye neutra set powder. It is 300% better than Baby pwder for setting your makeup. If you chech online you can llok at there catalogs and decide from there.
Balloons: Qualatex all the way. There is none better than I have found. Start with 260's. Eventually there will be other shapes you might need but 90% of all animals are made from 260 balloons.
BTw, Stiens has changed from What the stuff that I have. It has never been particularly "light" on the skin. I don't reccomend Steins. I 've never had trouble with it bothering my skin. But go with a creme style makeup.

The best way is to try small amounts of each brand to decide what is best for you and as far as balloons the Qualatex are the most widley used
Jubilee 10-14-2004, 07:30 AM Yes, Qualatex are awesome! I just ordered some from the T. Meyers website for a few gigs I have coming up. I love the colors and they are really durable.
I use Proface makeup and some Mehron. I also use Proface setting powder. I have had good success with the Proface and they make it with the skin in mind. I have pretty sensitive skin and have never had any problems with it. The colors are vibrant too.

Kickback 10-14-2004, 11:25 AM Well thanks to all the great input.
I have been to T. Meyers for a supply of balloons and some Pro face.
Also got Creative Clowning and have just started the reading.
You all are so helpful and I am glad to be a part of this.
Thanks again.
Jubilee 10-15-2004, 06:52 AM Kickback,
That's why we're here...to help each other and learn from each other. It's been an invaluable resource for me!

Did you know that ProFace make-up is actually made by Mehron? Its true. The formula is special for Pro-Face, but it comes out of the Mehron factory. Kind of like the big boys making products that the chain stores put their own names on.
And Steins, the real steins was great in its day. That is what I started with. unfortunately, the company ran into financial difficulty a number of years ago now and was purchased by Zauders. Comparing Zauders make-up to Mehron and Ben Nye is kind of like comparing Palmers dollar store chocolate to either Herseys or Nestle's.
Not really useful information but I found it interesting enough to pass along.
saphireSue 05-29-2007, 09:50 PM I use Ben nye and I really like it, each person skin is different, how dry, oily, etc. and you have to experiments some, several in my group use proface and it seems good to, I used to use melron grease paint, to me it was to heavy and harder on the skin.
Fitzwilly 05-29-2007, 10:01 PM Mehron's white is more of a throwback to the way grease paint used to be. While Ben Nye's white follows more current trends within the make-up industry. The thought now is that you should still be able to get the look you desire without "caking" on the make-up. That there are ways of making it "lighter" without sacrificing quality, coverage and lasting power.
Chuckles The Clown 05-29-2007, 10:41 PM I've had several people ask me about who does my makeup & I tell them "ME" . (good comments, have been asked a couple of times about talking to scouting groupes about application. I always tell them that you need to take TIME & spread the makeup evenly. It takes me about an hour, & I use a magnifying mirror. I like nice, sharp lines, & I try to not deviate from my charecter look. I
have always used Ben Nye, and even in hot weather, never had problems. Like stated before, everybody is different (Thank goodness) if we all looked alike, people would be rushing to their eye doctor to check their vision, or a shrink to ask why they are halucinating. maybe????????
Scruffy 05-30-2007, 06:27 PM .... However, Fruit flies like an occasional Banana...
That post is pushing three years old, Fitzwilly. I guess I had better update it.
I no longer use Steins makeup. I use Ben Nye for my Flesh tone, their Beard Stipple for my Beard, and their fire red for the sunburn on my cheeks. I also use the Neutra set powder; and their creme crayons to outline my eyes. I use Mehrons Clown White Lite for my muzzle and eyes. I also use the proface no sweat, I use Sticky dots (I believe they are made by Mehron) to hold on my nose. And I use Mehron Makeup remover to clean it all off.
Qualatex balloons are all i use. I buy them from Dave Hill at http://balloonsandclowns.com/
Merhon is my choice for make-up. Although I have used Ben Nye and liked it too.
Fitzwilly 05-30-2007, 09:40 PM I've been going through the archives. I liked the old Steins also. I ran out a number of years ago, and since I don't have any to compare with the advances in make-up today I still remember it fondly.
Like you Scruffy I use a combination of Ben Nye and Mehron. Your picture looks like you might use the Big Top Auguste. I've been using their darker auguste. I've even tried some of their regular theatrical foundations as a base, but I keep coming back to plain old Auguste.
Since you use BN's beard Stipple do you use a stipple sponge? It is rare among clowns but very common within the theatre.
And on a different topic. Since we haven't heard much from Jitterbug lately, are you and Sass still interested in a face painting jam? I have a couple of locations in mind in the South Bend, Elkhart region. Anybody else interested?
Fitzwilly 05-30-2007, 09:43 PM TJ you are a quicker poster than I am. Three times tonight I have been looking at a thread and by the time I get my comments together I find that you have already slipped in a post. "TJ - Fastest Forum poster in the west."
Scruffy 05-31-2007, 05:21 AM Interested? Yes! However, very busy. I'm in the process of helping a friend set up his new business here in town. I will have my work bench ( I'm a guitar technician) set up there, so I'm pretty busy at the moment. Plus the summer activities list is filling up pretty fast.
Btw, in my avatar, I'm not using flesh tone makeup.
Fitzwilly 06-01-2007, 12:32 AM Since I haven't set any times or dates yet, and neither has Jitterbug, are there any dates that might work out better for you?
Scruffy 06-01-2007, 05:16 AM Perhaps in the fall.
