View Full Version : Question from Matt Christensen at Maxim Magazine
MattMaxim 10-20-2004, 09:29 AM Clowns,
I know this message posting may seem to be somewhat suspicious, but I assure you that the questions I have are 100% genuine. First, allow me to introduce myself. My name is Matt Christensen. I'm 22 years old, and I am an editor at Maxim magazine in New York City. For those of you unfamiliar with the publication, it is the largest men's lifestyle magazine in the world, read by more than 2 million subscribers. The reason I'm posting is because I'm desperately seeking clowns for an upcoming article that we are in the process of working on. The title of the article (tentatively) is "Dating Tips from Clowns." We're seeking stories, anecdotes, and tales of success and failure from any clowns who have tried to pick up women. Sort of a "do" and "do not" type of feel dictating things you should and shouldn't do when trying to hit on ladies in full clown gear. The Editor-in-Cheif is very high on this story and, pending we can gather enough information, it could turn out to be a great story.
Any information at all would be greatly appreciated. I can be reached via email at christensen@maximmag.com, or via telephone at 212.372.3895.
I appreciate your taking the time to read this, and look forward to hearing from you.
Sincerely,
Matt Christensen

Jubilee 10-20-2004, 09:32 AM Well, since I'm a woman, I can't help you, but maybe some of the guys here can.
Smile.

Gilbert 10-20-2004, 12:53 PM Clowns are non-sexual in nature. To even consider using our clown character in that way is not considered acceptable by most clowns. To be a clown is to be childlike and innocent when in clown.
However there is a community of people who call themselves clowns who would probabbly not have any problems with what you suggest. I suggest you look up 'scary clowns' in a search engine if you want to find them.
Matt,
Your question is certainly an interesting one, and you are likely to get some interesting responses. I personally don't have experience in that regard.
It is my hope that you are able to distinguish between clowns, who adhere to a code of ethics, and those who "dress up as clowns" and may have all types of motives and/or proclivities. It is also my sincere hope that clowns don't try to pick up dates while clowning. Please go to the Clowns Of America International website at www.coai.org and read the Code of Ethics (this code is used rather universally, and not just by COAI).
As clowns, many of us work with, and come in frequent contact with children. I am rather sensitive to topics that tend to cast clowns in a negative light and I fear your article, unless great care is taken, may do just that. People who use clowning for ulterior and unprofessional motives give the rest of us a bad name. Those people cause children and parents (and maybe magazine editors) to be distrustful. I can't tell you how many times I've had people make cracks to me like "John Wayne Gacy was a clown too."
Many clowns, around the world, put a great deal of time, effort, money and heart into clowning to benefit children, elderly, and people with sickness and injury. I beg you, on their behalf, to be respectful of the art of clowning.
Thank you.
Gilbert 10-20-2004, 01:19 PM Well said Mozo
mr_buckaroo 10-20-2004, 01:33 PM maybe a article about good clowns, bad clowns and the clown code of ethics would be better. and how clowns make ppl forget age sex and troubles for a time would be a better article. clowns are there to make smiles.
mr_buckaroo 10-20-2004, 01:36 PM i dont think anyone could put it better mozo
Picaburu 10-20-2004, 08:08 PM Surely, Mozo...
It was the best answer that we could done about it...
I think that he would write about clowning in general and try to get some experiences of us... The only experience that I have about what maxim need... is that my girlfriend have started a clown course together with me... But I have started last semester...
But not with clowning... When I'm dressed with my clown... forget couple....
Hugs for everybody

saphireSue 10-20-2004, 11:37 PM I agree with Mozo.
Scruffy 10-21-2004, 04:58 AM Sorry, Matt.
I reality our lives as clowns are nothing like what you see in the Shakes The Clown movie. :)
And truthfully, we like it that way.
LooneyBallooney 10-21-2004, 10:31 AM I don't think he is checking our posts, his said to email him at the magizine. If you want to tell him what you think do it there.

giggles 10-21-2004, 02:21 PM Hi everyone! I wanted to share with you the email I have just drafted to Matt:
Matt,
I belong to the clown-forum and I felt it necessary to personally email you a response. I am a fourteen year old female and when I come home from school every day, I do my homework, have a snack, and check my messages on the forum. It is with great disgust that I read your message. You are only twenty-two years old and while I am a writer and appreciate that you are making good money working for a popular magazine, you are supporting the demoralization of women. Just because I have a vagina does not make me a sex icon and I marvel at how you can throw your life away by supporting the abuse of women. And then, you not only make fun of women, but you make clowns a mockery, while we are making a living doing something that brings smiles to people of all ages. And while you may say that you work to bring smiles to people, we are helping others in the process, not severely hindering like you are. Women, Clowns, what's next-Jews? Well, I am all three, and this needs to be stopped.
Jubilee 10-22-2004, 08:15 AM Giggles,
That was well written and right on. Thank you for that. I was frankly dumbfounded by his post!
I couldn't quite come up with what I was thinking.
