View Full Version : What brand of nose do you like?
TinyTiff 10-21-2004, 04:50 PM I need to get a nose- Is there a particular brand that fits better. My last foray with adhesive did not go very well. I ripped off a lot of skin. Of course that was a long time ago. Any suggestions? Thank you guys are all so wonderful!
Jobee 10-21-2004, 05:08 PM I love pronose. It's shinny, soft and doesn't weight much. If you are going with a hobo/tramp look, go with Woochee
Scruffy 10-21-2004, 05:16 PM Wow, Tiff 8O
What did you use for adhesieve? Superglue?
Every Clown must pick his own nose, not the nose of others. (Sorry, couldn't resist. )
There are different brands with proknowse being the best (Or at least most widely used.).Sponge noses are common, not the greatest look but, hey- there cheap. I use a molded rubber one that isn'r around now. I would go with a proknows. And don't be afraid to go with the monofilament string. You can't sweat it off. A cool schnoz can often be found in the halloween section. It's a squeaker nose. White elastic string, And seems to be well made. the're about three bucks.
The great thing about proknows is they have a bunch of different sizes and shapes. Go to a costume shop and check out the selection. Most dealers have a selection that you can try on.
Jobee 10-21-2004, 07:29 PM So you can go down to the shop and pick your nose. And hey! Bring a friend and pick their nose. :o)
How are the Woochie noses? They seem relativly cheap... I'm aiming for a happy tramp clown and am wondering if the Woochie's are duller than the proknows?
Thanks a bunch,
Mike
I'm not sure how to edit my last post, but to clarify by cheap I mean monetary value, not quality.
Jobee 10-21-2004, 11:31 PM Well, a woochee is duller than the proknows and also tends to be a little cheeper. The proknows usually ranges from $13.00-$15.00 If you want cheep. Sponge ball is not a great quality but at less than a buck....
Scruffy 10-22-2004, 06:37 AM I have been told that you can get proknows in different colors.I haven't checked though. A Woochie (I'm Told) is latex. and I guess some people can have allergies A simple clip on nose is a good choice for some. they clip around your nostrils. I used one originally. The one I had always made me feel like I couldn't breathe. It had no nostrils. All of them I have seen since have holes so you can get enough air.
saphireSue 10-22-2004, 10:13 PM I use a Pro Knows nose tip and the adhesive, holds all day comes of skin easy but need remover to keep build up off nose inside, they do have flesh colored and the first time I saw them at the last work shop I didn't think much of them at first because the flesh with the red didn't blend, but then they blend a little powder that was used on the face on the flesh part of the nose and some of the same rouge on the end of the nose and on this auguste it looked better than a red nose. They compare the two. There worth a look. The adhesive tape work well with a full nose, doesn't with a tip.. I tried.
Jubilee 10-28-2004, 08:07 AM I find any kind of prosthetic nose makes my "real" nose run like crazy, so I have taken to just painting my nose red. It works well for me.

PanettaPicklePants 10-29-2004, 12:19 AM LOL Jobee, that reminds of the saying we used to say as kids "You can pick your nose, you can pick your friends, but you cant pick your friends nose!" :)

WillyNilly 10-29-2004, 02:09 PM I painted mine on for years and recently acquired one at Clownfest from Pronose. I use Jim Howle's latex adhesive with good results. I did notice that my real nose started to run after having the fake one on for 6 or 7 hours. I still paint a red nose on under the Pronose, in case I lose it, or it gets grabbed. Once, I even forgot to wear my fake nose, but no one noticed because it was red anyway. Bump a nose....Willy Nilly[/b]

ashes 11-17-2004, 09:14 PM I'm with willynilly here on this - a painted on nose underneath just in case!
We have a walk-around gag using cheap foam noses on pipe-cleaner stems.
We have a sign that reads:
One dozen red noses.
Freshly picked just for you.
saphireSue 11-17-2004, 11:07 PM cute ashes
mr_buckaroo 11-18-2004, 01:01 AM thats good i like it ashes
Scruffy 11-18-2004, 02:39 AM Yes, definitely on the painted nose. I had a kid ask me why I had a string tied around my nose, I said it was to keep it from running.
boho64 09-11-2008, 05:09 PM I have a proknows hobo still but I found after a while that it scared small children. So I don't wear it anymore.
Governor of Florida in 1682 09-11-2008, 05:18 PM I've had nothing but bad luck keeping a glue on nose attached to my fase so just use paint. I've used 2 brands of glue but both just sluff off. my last attempt I had to paint on the nose sitting in my car before going to the door at the party's location.
Bumbles 09-11-2008, 05:34 PM I bought a ProNose but have never used it I like my painted on nose better.
bambam634 09-12-2008, 01:47 PM I thought that a (pro) clown had to have an actuall red nose not just paint is this true
Prestige 09-12-2008, 02:48 PM I tend to use a Foam Clown Nose but I would LOVE the little shiny ones (like what Pickles wears), can't find them, been looking in stores over here for years and online no luck either.
Sir Toony Van Dukes 09-12-2008, 07:40 PM I have a ProKnows, but I had a very hard time picking one from the pictures online. There are too many to choose from and I didn't really know how big my nose really was. If you can go to a shop or dealer's booth at a convention you will be able to try them on for size.
Violet 09-24-2008, 09:07 AM I am struggling with the nose thing. I have terrible allergies, so anything that obstructs my breathing is a problem for me. I thought about trying just the tip nose (and I still may), but for now since my own schnozz is plenty big enough, I am just painting it. Do you think it would it help to put red glitter on top of the red makeup?

I have a pronose tip and when my allergies are messed up.... it's often too much.
I did get a smaller tip from mooseburger (the site is down or I would link) she has them on her "noses" page, it's the size of about a dime. It seems to be working through my fall allergies, it's a different brand than pronose though. www.mooseburger.com (The site is back up.)
I went for YEARS painting my nose on when I was a whiteface neat, and I always thought about adding a little sparkle to it, you should try and see!
Christopher Clown 09-24-2008, 10:15 AM Mooseburger sells Jim Howle's Noses
There is nothing wrong with painting on a nose if that suits you. Christopher Hudert AKA Hoot is a famous former Ringling Clown and he paints his nose on.
Scruffy 09-24-2008, 12:00 PM Welcome to ProKNOWS.com (http://www.proknows.com)
These are great noses. Schnattler are also good, As are the Jim Howle. another one that is great is the circus proknows. They are held on with fishline.and are usually pretty roomy.
Pickles 09-24-2008, 12:04 PM I'm still having trouble getting my new JH nose to stay on. I'm thinking about going back to the Pronose.
I just hate clowning in fear that I'm going to lose my nose! (clown's worst nightmare!)

I had that exact thing happen to me just as I got to my venue. Since then prostetics are banned for my clowning and red grease is the way to go.

Yeah, but have you seen the size of his nose? (Mark, don't tell Hoot about this, okay?)
Fitzwilly 09-24-2008, 03:27 PM Pick and LL - what type of adhesive have you been using?
There are different kinds and different formulas. Lately I switched to the super sticky tape sold by proknows. I used Schnattlacher adhesive for years and I still really like it but over time I get little "glue drops" on the outside of my nose, so I decided to try the tape, (I had tried a couple of different types in the past without much success) and WOW! it works! So you have to keep trying.
Pickles 09-24-2008, 03:37 PM Pick and LL - what type of adhesive have you been using?
Does the tape work on JH noses? What about a JH nose that already has had putty on it?
Governor of Florida in 1682 09-24-2008, 05:14 PM I used pronose and ben nye adhesives. I wind up with glue residue on the outside of the nose and wound up with the nose in my lap. The local supplier doesn't carry any tape.
Fitzwilly 09-24-2008, 07:26 PM LL - are you going to TCA? If so I believe Jim Howle will be there, Maybelle (his wife) will be at the Midwest Round-Up. ProKnows makes the tape so your supplier could order it for you or you could a) order it online yourself; or b) check with all the vendors at the convention; someone is bound to carry it.
Pick - I would concentrate on cleaning the nose very well, perhaps even using fingernail polish remover to really clean it out. After it dries the tape should stick pretty well.
pixcoco 09-24-2008, 08:01 PM The wooshie nose is nice and I used one for years. But it needs to be replace frequently so I'm not sure if it is cheaper in the long run. Pronose has a nice looking one that gives the same effect.
20 years and I have not found my nose in my lap yet. That is even in TX heat and with my oily skin. At times I would re-glue on long (8+ hour) days. But in TX I had to re-powder too.
I think the auguest clown should have a real fake (???) nose. White face can "pull off" a painted nose better. Even better if you glitter it. To do this...paint you nose with the nose glue and dip you nose in the glitter. It peels off when you are done and holds perfect.
I have the allergie thing too. The wooshie lets you lift the nose and wipe (sorry for the visual) because it is only glued on the top. At least mine was.
Now I use my pro nose. I will not trade it. Leon did not pay me to say that.
Governor of Florida in 1682 09-24-2008, 08:12 PM Since TCA is hosted by my alley I would be drawn and quartered if I don't go. I plan on checking with the venders but not sure how much (I will have in funds and there are a lot of tools and costume parts I need as well. Poverty bites.
saphireSue 09-24-2008, 10:09 PM every one has their preferences, this past summer I got a new nose so I waited about putting the putty in it and went back to the tape, [the nose still had that new look on the inside and didn't want to add the putty yet] well, ran out of tape and put the putty inside. I decided I really like it best for me. Nothings worse than driving to an event, all of a sudden sneeze, tape/adheisive may keep the nose on, but kinda hard to use a tissue. With the putty, when you feel a sneeze coming on, you can, privately pop off, take care of business, and pop back on, no wait, no mess, just go, that I like.
Scruffy 09-25-2008, 03:57 AM Does the tape work on JH noses? What about a JH nose that already has had putty on it?
Yes, and I'm not sure.
Pinky Shortcakes 09-25-2008, 03:03 PM Tiny Tiff, Check your private messages. I sent you one about a Jim Howle nose I could send you if you want.
Bingle 10-28-2008, 02:36 AM I love my proknows. For me a clown without a nose is like a sundae without a cherry. If wearing a nose makes you claustrophobic, use a nose tip and leave your nostrils uncovered. ProKnows can be had in many shapes, and if you call Mr. McBride, he can make you one in a custom color or one with a glitter finish. I needed a black nose last year for a halloween costume and he had it to me in under a week.
A good costume shop in the city nearby has a sample tray of ProKnows's; I tried every different shape and size and found that my favorite by far was the same model that I'd already been using for years. Maybe I just got used to it. It is best to try the nose on in a store or vendor's table to be sure that the nose is comfortable and complements the shape of your face rather than crossing your fingers and ordering online.
I usually glue my nose on with spirit gum, and I haven't had any problems. I prefer latex adhesive because it is easier for me to peel off when I'm finished clowning, but its a little harder to find. Lately, there seems to be an exaggerated fear of latex allergy, so perhaps that is why latex adhesive is so hard to find. ProKnows is now made without latex in the foam. I figure that surgeons used latex gloves for years, and latex condoms have been used for years; so latex allergies are probably rarer than all the hype would lead you to believe.
Bingle 10-28-2008, 02:41 AM I forgot to mention that I always keep a foam ball nose in my pocket. It essentially weighs nothing and takes up no room in my pocket. Whenever anyone wants to get their picture taken with the clown (and nowadays everyone is carrying a camera cellphone), I whip out the foam nose and put it on them. It makes for a much sillier and more memorable picture, but it doesn't upstage me--I'm wearing a bright shiny professional grade ProKnows, they're wearing an El-Cheapo sponge ball.
I wear a ProNose.
But think about getting a Jim howel!!!
Artsy 10-28-2008, 10:42 AM Lately, there seems to be an exaggerated fear of latex allergy... I figure that surgeons used latex gloves for years, and latex condoms have been used for years; so latex allergies are probably rarer than all the hype would lead you to believe.
Ummm... I would LOVE to be able to get rid of my "hyped" allergic reaction to latex. There's nothing exaggerated about not being able to breathe. There's nothing feigned about my lips swelling up like I just overdosed on a collagen injection.
Latex comes from trees. It's the protein in the latex that filters into the cornstarch powder in balloons that does it to me.
Everyone working with children should be aware of the allergic reactions in case a child or adult experiences any other symptoms in your presence.
Hospital clowns cannot use latex balloons while visiting patients.
I wonder if the latex adhesive is what causes clowns to sneeze so much when their noses are on?
Here's a cut and pasted FYI for everyone to understand that latex allergy does exist.
Allergies: Latex Allergies
Latex, also known as rubber or natural latex, is derived from the milky sap of the rubber tree, found in Africa and Southeast Asia.
Latex allergy is an allergic reaction to substances in natural latex. Rubber gloves are the main source of allergic reactions, although latex is also used in other products such as condoms and some medical devices.
What Causes Latex Allergy?
The exact cause of latex allergy is unknown, but it is thought that repeated exposure to latex and rubber products may induce symptoms. About 5% to 10% of healthcare workers have some form of allergy to latex.
Who Is Affected By Latex Allergy?
Other than healthcare workers, people at increased risk for developing latex allergy include those who have:
A defect in their bone marrow cells.
A deformed bladder or urinary tract.
A history of multiple surgeries.
A urinary catheter, which has a rubber tip.
Allergy, asthma or eczema.
Food allergies to bananas, avocados, kiwis or chestnuts.
Rubber industry workers and condom users are also at increased risk for developing a latex allergy.
How Do People Get Exposed?
Routes of exposure include:
Through the skin, as occurs when latex gloves are worn.
Through mucous membranes, such as the eyes, mouth, vagina and rectum.
Through inhalation. Rubber gloves contain a powder that can be inhaled.
Through the blood, as may occur when some medical devices containing rubber are used.
What Happens During a Latex Reaction?
There are three types of latex reactions:
Irritant contact dermatitis. The least threatening type of latex reaction, classified as a non-allergenic skin reaction. It usually occurs as a result of repeated exposure to chemicals in latex gloves and results in dryness, itching, burning, scaling and lesions of the skin.
Allergic contact dermatitis. A delayed reaction to additives used in latex processing, which results in the same type of reactions as irritant contact dermatitis (dryness, itching, burning, scaling and lesions of the skin), but the reaction is more severe, spreads to more parts of the body and lasts longer.
Immediate allergic reaction (latex hypersensitivity). The most serious reaction to latex. It can show up as rhinitis with hay fever-like symptoms, conjunctivitis (pink eye), cramps, hives and severe itching. It is rare, but symptoms may progress to include rapid heartbeat, tremors, chest pain, difficulty breathing, low blood pressure, anaphylactic shock or potentially, death.
What Should I Do When a Latex-Allergy Reaction Occurs?
Allergic reactions to latex can range from skin redness and itching to more serious symptoms, such as hives or gastrointestinal problems. True allergic reactions to latex rarely progress to the life-threatening conditions such as low blood pressure, difficulty breathing or rapid heart rate. However, if left untreated, these conditions could potentially result in death.
If you experience severe symptoms, call your doctor or 911 immediately, or go to the nearest emergency room.
Vegetus 10-28-2008, 11:03 AM This (http://www.fxwarehouse.info/Merchant2/merchant.mvc?Screen=PROD&Product_Code=N-3&Category_Code=NN) is my next nose, for my new clown (debut after the new year)... I've always wanted to do an "old man" clown, and have found the look I like finally with nose, wraps (http://www.fxwarehouse.info/Merchant2/merchant.mvc?Screen=PROD&Product_Code=AGE-5&Category_Code=OA), and a bit of make-up (http://www.fxwarehouse.info/Merchant2/merchant.mvc?Screen=PROD&Product_Code=6570&Category_Code=OA).
Perry Noia 10-28-2008, 01:45 PM No allergy is a laughing matter, and many unusual allergies exist. I have a very severe allergy to NSAIDs.
Alfie 10-28-2008, 02:13 PM well I dont use a nose. I paint my nose red..... It is very comfortable.
Bingle 10-30-2008, 01:07 AM In response to Artsy, for you latex allergy is real and significant, sort of like those for whom peanuts are life threatening. When I said "hyped", I meant to communicate that there is a misperception that many more people are sensitive to latex than the number of individuals who really are, and that there is a misperception that latex allergies are invariably severe.
Bottom line on using latex adhesive for clown noses: if you like the product, use it; if it causes you discomfort, switch to something else.
For the vast majority of people, latex exposure poses no problems and they are very unlikely to have untoward effects from wearing latex adhesive. Until after the second world war, ALL rubber was latex derived. For many years people have worked with latex rubber, covered their homes with latex paints, twisted latex balloons, worn latex gloves, used latex condoms, etc. As you can see latex is still a common consumer product. It is only in the past ten to fifteen years that there has really been much attention paid to latex allergies. Even today, not all hospitals are latex free. As you can see from the literature which Artsy cited, even if latex allergy occurs, it may manifest with only minor nuisance symptoms such as reddened or dry skin at the site that was in contact with the latex (I would add that if a latex allergy exists at all, mild manifestations are much more common than severe ones).
I apologize if I've sounded argumentative, no disrespect is intended. I'm just trying to put the dangers into perspective so that everyone can make an informed decision.
Kallie 11-13-2008, 02:58 PM The only thing I hate about a big nose is that sometimes brats like to grab your nose, so I always painted my nose underneath, incase I do lose my nose. Therefore I rather only wear my big nose on stageshows etc. I also think glitter on a painted nose just give that extra sparkle which make up for the loss of the big nose.
oogie 11-14-2008, 10:35 AM I think I have tried most of the noses out there and have found that for me, the ProNose is the best. I to use the latex to apply my nose and it works for me, but if someone has allergies to latex then stay away from it for sure. We have clowned some 14 hr. days in the summer heat and our make-up and our nose looks the same as when we first started. But like most things what works for you may not work for the next clown so my advice would be to see how many different types of noses you could try on and go from there. We started out 24 yrs. ago with the old rubber nose and then went from nose to nose as we kept upgrading. I don't think we will ever keep from trying to improve our selves both in style and in costume.
Oogie
Vegetus 11-14-2008, 10:40 AM Leon's noses are latex free and he now offers a latex free glue for them as well at Untitled Document (http://www.proknows.com)
I've bought a couple of his noses and didn't like them at all - the look, not the quality. I just couldn't find a nose I liked. Suitcase Sam turned me on to the model he uses and I ordered one a couple of weeks ago, and I like it alot (so far). I've not had my clown face on with it yet though, so I'll have to see for certain. I'll debut it at this years Christmas parade probably (or at a party the weekend prior)...
Boogle 11-24-2008, 01:03 PM I like the shiny plastic ones that have a slight curve up to them. Also I like when noses are just painted on with the face paint :)
Buggs The Clown 11-24-2008, 07:23 PM I prefer Jim Howle noses because they are lightweight and they don't take much adhesive to make them stay on.
BlossomTheClown 11-24-2008, 10:53 PM I'm not sure that I have a preference on which brand of nose but I started with a full nose and later switched to a nose tip due to allergies and the need to be able to blow my nose. I've been using a ProKnows nose tip for about three years now and like it just fine.
The BEAST 11-24-2008, 11:24 PM I prefer Pro-Nose "Ralph" that's the big round one with the PN adhesive. I have been in makeup as long as 18 hours without losing my nose. I always take my bottle of adhesive with me in case. Pro-Nose and Jim Howle both have noses for every character,,,even hobo. They have a matt finish flesh nose that is awesome. They also have cute little glitter tips. And remember " You can pick your nose and you can pick your friends..but you can't wipe your friends on the back of the couch!!!
Butterscotch 11-25-2008, 12:09 AM I use Pro knows PM clown nose. I have Buttons hollow them out a bit for me and I have them in several different colors, my favorite being the purple nose, but I have light blue, dark blue, pink, lavendar and red of course...I have to be color coordinated Dahling!
Alfie 11-25-2008, 01:32 AM For my 1st year I used a pro nose. I did notice that the nose seemed uncomfortable. So I trashed the nose and I just paint my nose red with a crayon. People seem to like it and it is so more comfortable. And also you dont have to buy a $15 nose now....
Fitzwilly 11-25-2008, 05:35 PM Alfie - it is likely that the nose just didn't fit well. Sometimes when a nose comes out of the mold there is a little extra foam left over. A sharp craft knife or a Dremel with a grinding attachment will fix a problem like that in an instant. If the nose is too tight it is possible that you had a nose that was just too small for the size of your nose. That is why it generally works out better to sample a few styles at a brick & morter shop or at a convention. It is really hard to guess which one will not only fit your regular nose but will also fit your character.
Scruffy 11-25-2008, 07:12 PM Does any one use the Proknows TXL? I think it's a great, unique nose. Definitely not for everybody. but wound make a unique Auguste or whiteface nose.
Butterscotch 11-25-2008, 08:27 PM When I put on my nose I use the nose glue that Buttons sells. It has a nice scent. Put the glue on your real nose first, take your clown nose and quickly put your clown nose on the glue you just put on your real nose before it dries, then pull it off quickly. This will get glue inside the clown nose and leave some on your real nose. Now let them both dry. After you can see that the glue is clear, attach your clown nose to your real nose. This will form a good bond. On those days when you might get a little sweaty, it is good to bring your bottle of glue with you just as Animal mentioned for a quick "re-attachment" followning the same steps as above.
glitterbugg 11-25-2008, 08:31 PM i use pro nose and at times i paint one on .i also use the paint on adhesive.
Butterscotch 11-25-2008, 08:37 PM I have seen some of my lady clown friends put the glue on their noses, paint it and then put the glitter on them and it looks very nice.
this is just a Gross story but i'll tell it:
So back in 1997 when I started and bouth my very first Proknows, I love it and I used it for 10 years+(not everyday maybe once or twice a year)
I told a friend that and he was like "dude" I buy like a new one every 6 months.
I felt sort of gross then and bought me a new one, and now i use the nose tape too, soo less messy!!!!
