Take a good clear photo of yourself, place a transparency over it and with Over head transparency markers, start drawing your new mug!
A couple of tips.
1. Exaggerate your expressions. They may look goofy on a human, but they are right at home on a clown.
2. Even if you are set in your character, try others. IE. If you are going to be a white face, also design an Auguste face. You never know when you might need a second Character.

I know when i figured out my face i took a piece of paper and drew a face about the size of a normal face and did the best i could to make it look like my face shape then i had a bunch of copies made of it took some colored pencils and went to drawing i propably drew 20 or more and then figured out which one liked the best.

Ah, remember the reason for the makup is not to be a mask, but to enhance your
Natural expressions - happiness, sadness, anger, surprise, every emotion!
It's a great idea to take a picture and put clear plastic over it.
Be sure to STUDY your natural face - see where your laugh lines are.
Look and see what creases naturally move in your forehead.
If you're a tramp/hobo clown - grow a 4 day growth of beard and take
your're picture - study where the beard line is. Notice that it isn't all
the same thickness. Any grey hair in there?
Your clown face should be YOUR face in a way - makeup should go to those
creases that move. If your mouth is wider than that, it is too big - that
part of the makeup won't move and convey expression!
Pay close attention to the eyes - remember just how much expression is
conveyed by the eyes! If you have white around the eyes, be sure to wear
an eye liner and mascara to bring the eyes back out of that sea of white.
Remember also, that your clown face is a work-in-progress. It will change
over time - sometimes subtly, sometimes drastically!
Hope this helps some!
