Well, I was happy to do my small part. we were tops!!
Our Community did it again!
Relay For Life of Tift County is #1 in the Nation for 2007!
Pine Mountain, GA -- (October 20, 2007) – The American Cancer Society has made it official, Tift County has been named #1 in the Nation for 2007! This makes it a Back to Back accomplishment! In 2007 there were more than 4,800 Relay For Life events held in the United States. Events are ranked according to their population category and Tift County ranks the best of the best in the 40,000-49,999 category.
Tift County Relay For Life Volunteers have shown that it wasn’t a fluke or a one-time thing! They made it to the top in 2006 and have now proven they intend to stay there. Each year Tift County has been on a steady incline, ranking in the top ten nationwide for the past 4 years, with the last 2 being #1! This is because of their passion and ability to lead the community through sweat and tears to make this goal a reality! The Tift County Relay netted just over $344,000. Close to a $20,000 increase from 2006! Thousands of people in the community joined in this celebration. Over 200 cancer survivors participated in the opening lap and more than 60 teams camped-out all night long!
The Tift County Relay has been known throughout the state of Georgia and the South Atlantic Division as a true leader and is known for its great ideas and fantastic finishes. This is because of YOU and all of the committee members, participants, survivors, businesses and the entire community. “We are proud to be in the spotlight for this tremendous accomplishment for the second year in a row – but really it’s the participation from the businesses and individuals of our community that has made it all possible,” said Lee Turner (2007 Event Chairperson), “It is this community as a whole who are making a difference in the fight against cancer.” Even better, our community can see these funds coming back into our community. Working with Tift Regional Medical Center, the ACS has brought programs such as Look Good…Feel Better to our local cancer patients. The ACS Freshstart Smoking Cessation program is offered at TRMC each month and is FREE to the public. Also, several local patients, who must travel long distances for their treatment, have been able to stay at the various ACS Hope Lodges that are located in places such as Atlanta, Gainesville Florida and Birmingham Alabama. These facilities are available only because communities like ours!
This announcement comes at a perfect time as the Relay Committee is currently planning the 2008 Kick-off for Tuesday, November 13th at 12 noon at the UGA Tifton Campus Conference Center. Anyone interested in coming or finding out more information can contact the 2008 Event Chairperson, Rachel Montfort at 388-6247.
