I was doing an event this weekend with Scruffy and did a little magic trick. I had one of the kids waiting for a balloon wrap a rope around my legs and then crossed and wrapped around my hands and tied.

I then have them place a blanket over me. I will then remove a hand and pull the blanket up higher. And tell them that is has to be more like this. And pull it up higher.

Sometmes I would take a hand out and tap Scruffy on the shoulder. And then I would put the hand back. Then when Scruffy or the kid pulls the blanket off my hands are still tied.

This gag can run for a bit. And it really shocks kids.

It was fun. It was also the rudest bunch I've seen in a while! Taking things from your hand, cutting in line, demanding bossy people.

.....And that was the adults.

How do ya'll handle it?

it is really difficult dealing with rude people. There certainly is no easy answer. There have been times when I have had to stop and shut my case and latch it to keep hands out. I have stopped and made announcments, some fairly quiet to just the front few people in line and some very loudly. I have stopped and tried to find someone in charge but that is difficult because there is no way I am leaving my stuff unattended in a situation like that.

The encounter plays a big role in dealing with attitude as well.

In restaurant's, when doing magic - if I have someone acting like an idiot and being rude; I simply stop my trick and say something along the lines of "I'm sorry, but I do not tolerate rudeness" and move on to the next table. If they can't act civil; then they don't deserve to be entertained.

In street festivals, when stiltwalking - I've had people actually try to knock me over. I try to keep a spotter to keep these jerks at bay, but there are times when the event host cannot supply one; and I can't bring one of my own. These times I incorporate something into my costume to help out - usually a thick dowell rode (the couple inch thick one) painted like a wand, or candy cane, or whatever. Fortunately, I haven't had to crown anyone yet - maybe the sight of a twelve foot clown with a 4-5' club deters their hostile behavior...

I agree. Rude people are not fun dealing with.

It's a shame that some people ruin it for the rest.
