Just trying to get an idea what y'all incorperate into your act apart from "standard" clown stuff?

What sort of juggling do you do?
If you do magic, what effects do you perform?

I do primarily balloons, juggling (although I'm always working on that, got the three ball cascade down pretty good) walkarounds, word and site gags, and a little hankerchief and sponge ball magic.I've done a couple of face paintings, but not so much as that's not my favorite thing.

I do balloons, skits, clown magic, face painting, don't have much luck with juggling, but I just got some juggling sticks at the renaissance festival and I'm learning to juggle them.

Still learning skills. I think I'd like to build more of a personality with my character

Jobee,
I think you hit the nail on the head. Character development is vital; I think the most important thing. Because when you run out of balloons and have shown them all your tricks, it's all you have left to go on.
It's the biggest part of being a "Real" clown, so spend plenty of time working on it. Personally I think having a strong character, get get you by in a lot of other areas of deficiency.

All the skills in the world won't help if you don't have the character
behind them.

Almost all magic is simple - it's ALL in the presentation.

I'm trying to incorporate banjo or guitar (working on learning both) -- but
what we do are safety-related skits where we teach behaviours to kindergarten
through 3rd grade. We use music, repetition as well as some demonstration and
participation to teach these skills.

My wife and I do balloons - I do simple balloon twisting, she does hearts and
alien balloons on sticks. But that is coming to an end over time as we try to
move away from balloons (choking hazard for little ones)...

And we do face painting - in the context of being able to spend one-on-one
time with kids and talk life and fire safety.

So there you have it.

Since Ashes brought up music. I'm almost done making a ukulele for my character. (Since I'm a luthier I figured I was without excuse on this one) It's almost done. I have the body built (Mahogony), I just need to finish the neck and fingerboard.

Hey Bips, I've got an idea. A one man band with a bass drum. Could be fun for parades and parties !

and a cymbal on top of the head - ouch!

Don't forget you can make music from just about anything --
Car horns, cowbells, burps, glugs, etc.

Go to the junk yard or pawn shop with drum sticks or mallets and listen
to the timbres of things as you strike them (don't break them!!!).

Get a toilet seat and string it with nylon guitar strings.

Get a trombone mouthpiece and put together an odd contraption
of lengths of pipe and tubing.

Let your imagination be your guide!
