View Full Version : Wig, natural hair or bald?
ashes 11-17-2004, 09:20 PM Well, I am a tramp clown and I'm still working on ideas
for my costume, face and such - even after clowning for nearly
30 years...
I'm naturally balding - in fact, I've been growing out what hair I
have for a while now to give me a natural bald-pate wig without
having to buy one.
The down side to this is my every-day hair is now clown hair. I can
do fun things with it but it drives me crazy.
My other choices are to buy a bald-pate wig (boo-hiss) but they're
too hot here in Texas.
Or, just go ahead and go back to my really short hair (ALMOST shaved,
but not quite.)
The effect would be funny with a small fire helmet on that vast expanse
of head.
I'm still trying to decide. Any thoughts from the peanut gallery?
Anyone ever seen a bald tramp clown?
saphireSue 11-17-2004, 11:10 PM I do beleive there was one several years ago at a workshop I attended, He had a beard but not hair and an old hat. Look good
mr_buckaroo 11-18-2004, 12:59 AM i dont use a wig myself but my hair is red so it kinda works. i also use a old keystone gray cowboy hat with the brim turned up for my cowboy clown.
Scruffy 11-18-2004, 02:44 AM I believe Jobee does. Like you, ashes. I'm working my way there. My clown hair is my har. I have it left a little long on the sides and use moose (Mousse) to help control it. I also comb my hair back in to basically a pompadour, also known as a DA. For Scruffy, I just pull the hair on the sides out and shag it out a bit.
Ya know, it's funny....
When I was a teenager, I wanted beard hair so bad that I would shave what little I had twice a day hoping it would grow in thicker...
The beard now twenty years later is thick, graying, and nice....and something I don't want any more!
I have a decent head of hair, although my receding hairline has made enormous progress in the last few years. I'm at the stage of my life where I am actually WANTING to be bald on the top, and have hair on the sides I can grow out.
Funny how life works, huh?
In the class that Chuck Sidlow taught during clown school he showed us how to use hair for comedic effect, and it was great! Ironically though, he doesn't use his natural hair. That schooltime was money well spent, and I hope in the next year or so to be able to afford more...
ashes 11-18-2004, 09:52 AM Well, actually, Chuck-o does use his real hair when he does
his Groucho character. If I remember correctly.
I've been growing mine out now for a few months. Maybe 6 months.
It works great for my clown character - perfect characterizaton and you
CAN do lots of fun things with it.
It's just that it bugs the heck out of me during every day life...
We responded to a structure fire last night and I had a terrible case
of bed-hair. My fellow reserves were laughing and getting a huge
kick out of it. I told them it was all by design!
They even had to have a picture of my hair, since one of them had
a camera with him. Can't wait to see how that one comes out.
It is a little bit of a problem since the firemen all have really short hair. I've
always kept mine really short also - up til now, that is.
It's a small problem, though, in the grand scheme of things.
SouthwestSam 11-20-2004, 05:45 PM I started out wearing wigs and loved the laughs when my hat would fall off showing a bald head with red curly hair, I even tied a string to my waistband in the back and attached it to my hat so that when I bent over to take a bow, the hat was guaranteed to fall off and get laughs.
But I sweat profusely so the wig had to go. Sometimes I would just wig my hair out with hairspray so that when my hat was removed, it was a Wacky mess.
I too was a Hobo/Tramp Clown back in those days. Now, I'm just a Wacky Cowboy Character.

Jobee 11-20-2004, 11:06 PM I have the problem of being 25 but my hairline being 45. I shave right down to the scalp to try and keep my youth image but I might just let it grow out and shave the few hairs I got left on the top and maybe going for some hair dye to complete the image.
Scruffy 11-21-2004, 08:08 AM Hair loss is fast. I'm 36. Ten years ago before I was diagnosed with diabetes, I had a full head of theick, wavy hair. It was become fine and is thinning at a rapid rate. I guess I have a retreating hairline :)
My wife still loves me though :D
SouthwestSam 11-21-2004, 09:05 AM Hey Scruff,
You can say that again :D
Scruffy 11-21-2004, 04:30 PM Sam-
I hate computers 8)
Gilbert 11-21-2004, 05:25 PM You know what they say Hair to day ... gone tomorrow!
My thatch is thinning too. as for clown hair I never did get on with wigs and I only use hats outside. I just have very short hair and often make a balloon hat. that way my head can breath which reduced the sweating problem.
ashes 11-21-2004, 05:38 PM I have wavy hair also - the one on the left waves at the one on the right.
Actually, when I go to get a haircut, I end up paying a finders' fee.
I shave my bald area, and have been letting the rest grow. I specialize in
the wacky look every day, not just when I'm in clown.
I've been told I have the look that most clowns want, and pay a lot
for a wig to achieve.

SouthwestSam 11-21-2004, 10:40 PM I must get my eyes checked. I think I'm seeing double with this post.
mr_buckaroo 11-22-2004, 01:09 AM i havent lost my hair its just scurried down my back. but im kinda lucky still have enough upstrairs (hair that is) that it still looks ok. but I never go out without a cowboy hat or at least a baseball cap on so the wind hasnt blown it off the top yet.
Scruffy 11-22-2004, 05:04 AM MIne doesn't look terrible. It's just so fine and flyaway that it drives me crazy.
mr_buckaroo 11-22-2004, 02:00 PM mines always been like that to scruff very thin fly away hair. thats one reason ive always wore some kind of hat. and looking at most of the men in my family and being 25 for the 14th time as on the 12th of november it will probably be ecaping to my back more in the next few years. ill just tell ppl that i grew taller than my hair.
Wow.....now hair loss is something to look forward to! :)
Since mine's a receding hairline, I think I'll try what Jobee was talking about before, on growing out little wispy bits. Mine is just in it's beginning stages, so I won't shave the top part just yet, BUT, the side hair has a tendency to grow extra long. I keep my hair pretty short all over, but I think that I'll try a little experiment over the next few months.
On the side when it grows long, do you guys just comb it back behind your ears during everyday life? The whole reason I started trimming it so short years ago is because it tends to curl up when it gets really long.....
Look at this, me asking for hair care from clowns!! LOL...
mr_buckaroo 11-23-2004, 09:16 AM hey bips i use to have the long hairs on the side but couldnt stand the wings. i use to have long hair in the back which was perfect for my clown when i was bullfightin and its red so that made it al the better. but i kinda grew out of it so now its just short im thinkin about getting a wig the more i look at other clowns just havent figured out what i want.
ashes 11-23-2004, 10:44 AM Hair care for clowns, 101
I just comb mine back behind the ears. Mine gets wavy on the sides too, which
can be a real problem. Of course, the folks I hang around with a lot (firemen)
all have really short hair, even shaved heads, so I stand out big time.
Mine is so far gone, it is best to shave the bald area. Otherwise, it's just a
mess of individual hairs that grow with no real pattern.
I always wanted to get a single long strand (hair weave) woven into one side
and do the comb-over bit with one thin strand. Maybe even coil it up on
top of my head. THAT would get some laughs, I wager.
I've also thought about getting a really BAD toupee - just for the looks
it would get.
If I can continue to stand this mop of hair I'm growing, it works great for
my character.
mr_buckaroo 11-23-2004, 01:28 PM how about a getting a bald cap and put a toupe on top so you you can say that all the hair on the side fell out but the stuff on top stayed.
I kind of like the idea of having Every-Day Klown hair!
I told Mrs. BIPS about the hair idea, and she begged me not too....:)
Guess the experiment may have to wait a few more hairs....I mean years...
RedClownFred 03-10-2005, 08:34 PM Well I wear a red whig and also have red hair, hence me being red all my life! But for what it's worth, I think the bald head with long or frizzy side hair is a great look! But I do understand your civilian look being hard to control. Have you ever thought of just adding gel and having the wet look when you are not clowning? R.C.F.
Scruffy 03-10-2005, 09:20 PM I've though about the wet look. I just don't like it on me.
Willace-the-Clown 06-06-2006, 03:15 AM my Dad use to have long Wavy hair but my grandfather made him get it cut before he could go with my mom & the barber burnt his scalp & made him lose his hair on top. I made a White Face Clown for him Named Billace that weairs a White Bauld Cap. I offen tell him he isn't Bauld he is jsut taller then his hair :)

You guys that don't do wigs - do you color your hair ? - and with what? Yesterday's gig caught me without some product for my hair. (i used to wear the wig, but my top hat kept pulling it off - which did get some good laughs though).
Anyway, last minute I decided I wanted blue hair - asked (begged) my wife to go down to the halloween store and get some hair color spray. She came back, dropped it off quick, and left (almost missing out on her "thank you" kiss!) Anyway, I open the bag and she inadvertantly grabbed silly string! NOW, I'm really pressed for time. So, I put blue face paint in my hair. I gotta say I liked it, but it was very messy and the shower afterwards looked like I murdered a Smurf.
What hair color is the best?
Scruffy 09-11-2006, 04:43 AM Usually, they say to go with a hair color shade that you would see in the real world. IE: red, orange, Yellow (Blond). FWIW, In a lot of clown competitions, you will be judged down for a different color.
I'll type more later, my arm/hand doesn't want to work very weel right now.

Really? Wow. I guess my rebel attitude lives on in clowning too! :D Actually, I ended up with white bangs and blue sides - I thought it turned out pretty cool. But what do I know?

Too many balloon animals? Hope you get better!
Scruffy 09-12-2006, 05:41 AM Too many balloon animals? Hope you get better!
Torn rotator cuff.

Torn rotator cuff.
OUCH! Well, here's the good news - I think a properly colored sling will go good with your attire! :? I also wish you the best of luck w/ your upcoming gig. Make the torn 'cuff (and possible sling) work with your act!
Scruffy 09-12-2006, 05:52 PM I think I'll use a big red bandanna as a sling and tell them I tripped when i rolled off the train.
Anyway, about wigs: I have never worn was as a tramp. In the past I wore one as a white face(Always) Originally, I was an auguste and didn't wear a wig. (I couldn't afford one and back then you couln't find ANY wig for less than 20 bucks at a wig shop. My oldest son's wig (A red Silly Boy) came from CVS Pharmacy the day after halloween for about three bucks on close out. It is incredibly thick and full. I'd have killed to find that at a drug store when I was fourteen!
Hair is a major part of a clowns character. I too let my clown character dictate how I wear my hair everyday. I preferr it short and neat, but Scruffy looks terrible with it like that! And, I don't want to wear a wig. So, I looks a little messy.
It's okay thouh. At least Sassy still loved me. :P
ibimus 11-04-2006, 08:33 PM I'm not wearing a wig these days, but I'm thinking I might cave and get one. (I would just dye my hair some odd colour, but I don't think my day job permits that.....darn those bosses and their rules.)
stitches 11-07-2006, 12:07 PM I wear an orange wig when I'm dressed as a full Auguste, but use my own hair and an orange hat when I use my lite Auguste face design.
I just curl my hair outward so it looks silly under my hat. I once saw a clown who kept a tiny ponytail under his hat. When posing for pics, he took his hat off and held it in both hands - he was adorable!
