I'm a brand new Klown. I spell it with a "K" because I'm a member of the Kena Shrine (Shriner), and decided to join the Kena Klowns. I've seen them in the parades every year and laughed. I see the way the kids smile and laugh too. I've never done any Klowning other that class-klowning. So this will be an adventure. I've found that over the years that my serious side has taken over and I miss my funny side. So I thought, 'what better way to get back to my funny side than to hang around with a bunch of Klowns.' So here goes nothing.

I'm going with the Hobo persona. I've already visited the Salvation Army to start my wardrobe. I'd sure appreciate any pointers you might want to share. I'm making my debut in the Manassas, Virginia Christmas Parade on 4 Dec.

I started out as an Auguste in 1990, then switched to Hobo/Tramp in '93 performing as HAYSEED THE HOBO CLOWN.
Here's a pic of when I won 2nd Place in the Clown category for the Harvast Homecoming Parade in '98.

Welcome TJ and if I can be of any assistance, feel free to write.

One Parade suggestion I may have to offer, and one that helped me win that 2nd Place above,,,,I wanted to be the Best Hobo Clown I could be. To do that, I had to put myself in my characters shoes. What do hobos like??? Trains. What are hobos??? They're basically down on their luck but happy with what they got.

So, I added a big stick with a bandanna attached to it (Hobo Stick). Then, I got an aluminum garbage can (not plastic) and attached caster, roll around wheels to the bottom of it. Tied a piece of rope to pull it along and Wallah! Hobo on the go. I even tied a railroad lantern on the side. From that point on, this was what I carried my props in along with my whole entire act. Made it easy to wheel in and out of the birthday child's home and a nice store all when it came time to exit (just throw everything in the trash can and go).

Hope this helps inspire you.

Sam,
Great picture, and Ideas! How about a steel garbage can mounted to a a platform with wheels on it's side. I this to update it for mordern times is to use a giant plastic trash bit like allthese cities have gone too.
Anyway, Tell people you're on vacation and it's your trailer, with a steel one you could paint "airstream" or "down wind" on it.

Hey There, TJ! (BIG WAVE)

Watch out! (Splash)

Here's a towel, that big wave always get's 'em....:)

Welcome aboard! The hijinks and hilarity are contagious here, so I'm sure you'll pick 'em up in no time.

As far as tramp clowns, well, I'm more of an auguste/character clown, and when I get my avatar fixed you can see one of my outfits.

Learn here, but above all else....

HAVE FUN! :)

Everyone,

Thanks for the welcome! I'm happy to be here. I've already learned that you need to use putty to keep those noses on. Who'd a thunk. There are some great articles here. I stayed up late last night sewing patches on my Hobo suit. I found a site that sell ballons and such, and I bought a bag and a couple of books on ballon animals. I'd love to learn some magic too. First things first though. I've seen some Hobo faces and need to play around with some make up. Any suggestions on a brand of makeup and setting powder and all that Jazz :?:

It's nice to find a support group like this.
