Did you know that a very very very long time ago, people used to celebrate the new year on April 1st. They would exchange gifts and all that. When Gregorian Calendar was put in force, the New Year was celebrated in January. Those that didn't get the word (there was no e-mail then) were made fun of (called fools) and sent mock gifts on 1 April. Eventually the practice of playing jokes evolved. I would imagine that a kid could get a lot of gag gifts instead of real gifts when their birthday falls on April 1st. But, I guess that does make it harder to forget. When I was in high school, my buddies brother and siter inlaw had an April Fools Party and greeted everyone at the door with a gift. Nothing big, some got a spatula, one person got a scrub pad, another got fake dog doo doo. It was Cool.
