View Full Version : Glove Question
Pinky Shortcakes 04-11-2008, 12:45 PM Just a quick one: I have white cotton gloves (with snap). What happens if I cut off the fingers, so I can use my hands? Will they unravel? I can always buy more, but for tomorrow, I needed fingers free. Thanks
saphireSue 04-11-2008, 12:54 PM I'm not sure what's it's call, Scruffy can tell you , or check with a fabric store, but there's something you can spray, apply to keep it from unraveling. You can leave the gloves off. I don't wear mine when ballooning they get in the way, fingerless or not.
in Harmony with Jesus 04-11-2008, 01:23 PM I never wear gloves at all... but then again, I'm not a white face either. But yes, I believe there is something you can get to keep them from unraveling. When I was in the band though, we would just cut the tips just about at the back of the fingernail then roll them a couple of times.
Darrell 04-11-2008, 01:36 PM I agree with Sue, if you are going to be twisting balloons, don't wear gloves. One time I tried twisting balloons with a pair of gloves that were supposed to be specially made for griping balloons. After 5 minutes I took them off and have not wore gloves while twisting balloons since.

Scruffy 04-11-2008, 02:45 PM It's called fray check. It works pretty well. As a Fwiw, I completely removed the index finger and the middle finger of my right glove ( I'm left handed. BTW.) below the second knuckle. I kept ending up with stray threads in the balloons. In fact if you are going to wear them while twisting I'd cut the fingertips of the gloves off below the second knuckle on each of the fingers.
Pinky Shortcakes 04-11-2008, 04:29 PM Thanks. After reading all these replies, I will probably leave the gloves off. I already don't know what I'm doing, so I don't need any extra hinderances. :)
Duckie 04-11-2008, 06:08 PM There are also ready made finger tip gloves. I wear them while twisting and have never had a problem. With the fingertip gloves, they are sewn at the top, and are very thin, so there is no fraying and when you are outside when it's chilly, then they also keep your hands warm.
Just what I do, everyone has to find what's comfortable for them.
Fitzwilly 04-11-2008, 08:04 PM It still amazes people new to the Forum (and probably always will) that we are able and willing to state what works for us and openly say that it might not work for everyone. So many small local groups like to make up a few "special" rules that everyone must follow. Thank you my friends, it is very refreshing.
Pickles 04-15-2008, 10:20 AM Sometimes, if I know I want to arrive to an event wearing gloves but that I don't want to wear them while making balloons, I make a show out of removing my gloves by wearing growing gloves. I'm sure you've seen these. One of the gloves is a normal white glove, but the other is really long. As I slowly pull it off, it seems as though it will never end. And the fabric changes from striped to polka dot, etc. The kids think this is hysterical. The only problem is for somebody like me who doesn't have massive arms is that the hidden long glove is very bulky under my costume, so I need to be wearing something a little baggy. Daytona Magic carries these for under $20, and I'm sure you can find them elsewhere. I got mine for a few bucks on Ebay.

What a great idea, Pickles! I'll look for them. By the way: did you have your picture done professionally? It looks so darn good!
Pickles 04-15-2008, 10:58 AM Thanks, Pinky! Was the pic professional? Do you consider the 50,000 pictures for $4.99 at Wal-Mart to be professional? If so, I guess! It was taken about five or six years ago. I had just gotten my clown shoes, and I was beside myself with excitement. I REALLY wanted the shoes to be visible in a full-body shot. So the photographer had me lie on that dinky little table that they use for infant shots, and I had to scrunch up into a little tiny ball in order to get my shoes in the picture. It wasn't very comfortable, the photos turned out okay -- and you can see the shoes in the full-body shot.
Pinky Shortcakes 04-15-2008, 12:37 PM You got some of those fancy-dancy shoes that cost an arm and a pro-nose? Maybe I will some day (and I'll be as excited as you!). Right now I just use some cheap white sneakers that I painted flowers on, and I glued on some mult-colored rick rack. Guess you turned some heads at Wal-mart when you got your pictures done! Did you have to break into your act to control the crowd? LOL
Pickles 04-15-2008, 03:37 PM My Keds with the pickles painted on them served me fine until I saved up the bucks for the clown shoes, and your painted sneakers will too, Pinky.
Yes, there were a few people standing around the Wal-Mart photo shop watching my "photo shoot," but not as many as the last time I had my photos taken there. About 7 or 8 clowns from our club went together to have single shots and group shots taken. A crowd definitely gathered for that. I still use the older shots though; I like them better.
Sometimes at clown conferences they have professional photographers who do an incredible job. It would be fun to get a "real" photo taken someday. Sigh...add it to my wish list.
in Harmony with Jesus 04-15-2008, 03:53 PM Just thought I'd jump in since you were talking shoes & photography... 2 of my favorite things! For my shoes, I've got a pair of $5 canvas shoes from Wal Mart. I used 4 colors of glitter fabric paint on & covered the whole shoe then used regular fabric paint to draw on them.
As for photos... I'm w/ you on the wish list! I think that would be so much fun! But for now, y'all have given me a great idea to set something up w/ a friend of mine that does photography as a hobby.
Pickles 04-15-2008, 04:15 PM Harmony: Your shoes sound cute -- it would be fun to see them. In fact, wouldn't it be neat to have everybody post a picture of their shoes? (an idea for a new thread topic, I guess)
