View Full Version : Ideas??
Voice 05-04-2008, 06:12 PM I just had our "boss lady" tell use we were doing face painting !!!
our "paint" is a lot of haloween ( some out dated ) make up kits and a bunch of face paint craons. I have no idea what to do !!
I have art skils but not for this type of medea. Ineed some easy things for kids that will work with what we got.
 Why do the people I clown with do this to me!!!!!
Markie 05-04-2008, 06:24 PM EEEP HALLOWEEN MAKEUP AND CRAYONS AHHH!!!
Okay, the good side is Wolfe Bros makes both Halloween makeup and crayons and Ben Nye makes crayons.
The bad side, is I doubt that's what you have to work with. Personally I would just say no to this, and tell them they need the proper tools - you wouldn't send a construction worker to build a house without tools.
Assuming that's not a road you are willing or financially able to take, just do your best. Go around websites for ideas. Snazaroo's website at The SNAZAROO USA home page - for face painters (http://www.snazaroo.us) has some great ideas and there are others too (NOT an endorsement of Snazaroo's makeup... in fact I prefer Paradise by Mehron and Kryolan Aquacolors myself... but Snazaroo isn't bad, just not my taste)
Practice and have fun with it. Butterflies are always fun but I can't imagine face painting with crayons and halloween makeup! Lots of hearts on their cheeks?
Wow, I feel for you *hugs*
Mark
Voice 05-04-2008, 06:43 PM Thanks! I kinda feel bad for " boss lady " thats why I'm trying to make it work. The campus won't help fund us in any way eccept a ride so every thing comes from mebers pocets, that not alot 20-40$ every 2 weeks & after needs that leaves like $5 mabe some thimes. :(
Voice 05-04-2008, 06:48 PM I just talked to one of my clowns thay say the craons are Ben Nye we aslo have a skin packed bace . Thay were all from the mime aprently.:???: Hes the only one with any type of training too.
Markie 05-04-2008, 06:51 PM Ben Nye crayons probably aren't bad. I've never used them but Ben Nye makes decent products. Personally, I'd smoosh the crayons down into little containers and attempt to use them brush and sponge style if I had to use them (makeup sponges are fine if needbe and brushes can be had fairly cheap at a craft store). I just dunno what to say, it's sure not a fun situation to be in!
Voice 05-04-2008, 07:36 PM It's not oh well I'll try what I can....I do hav people I cam test on.
Muhahahahah!!!8-) Well thanks for the advce!
Markie 05-09-2008, 10:57 PM Lol crash test dummies are a good thing in face painting. I've seriously messed some stuff up on my cousins and my kids church class :) Which is great! Practice makes perfect and I learned from my mistakes! Gotta love those who patiently let you keep re-painting them as you try things! (Seriously, love on them, they can get sick of it easily)
saphireSue 05-25-2008, 10:40 PM in a pinch, Walmart does carry face paints in there craft section.
Not high quality stuff, but you could mix colors and it would get you by for the eveing. cheap.
Markie 05-25-2008, 10:42 PM Sue, I'd recommend using their old Ben Nye crayons over Palmer face paints any day!
saphireSue 05-25-2008, 10:52 PM depends on how old the crayons are.
Markie 05-25-2008, 11:22 PM The pigments and binders are still what they always were and there's preservatives in it. I'd mash the crayons up, mix them with a bit of distilled water if need be, and try to make usable little cakes out of them...
BlossomTheClown 05-30-2008, 04:18 PM I agree with Saphire Sue, the Wal-Mart face paints (also found at Hobby Lobby in my area) are inexpensive and will work fine for the evening. They aren't anything I would want to use for long term but we typically have our new clowns pick up a set when they start learning face painting to see if they will want to continue to face paint or not. Then they can use those for a bit before shelling out money for better stuff. Once opened, they don't store very well as they dry up pretty quickly.
Markie 06-04-2008, 01:27 AM EEEP! When all is said and done, they're basically acrylic paints - acrylic paints with cosmetic grade pigments but still acrylic paints. Acrylics that cause itchyness and discomfort and look bad and make kids never want their faces painted again.
The acrylics that result in me having at least one kid at every event say "will this hurt" or "I'm allergic :(" and then me having to do the whole "I use real makeup, it doesn't hurt at all - just tickles, and you are VERY unlikely to be allergic to it"
Sorry, but I can't agree with the use of such a product even under a "just trying it out" or "just doing one event" basis. These products simply hurt our reputation as face painters far too much.
Primary Color Palettes of good products aren't THAT expensive:
Snazaroo 8-color rainbow palette - $15.00 - Silly Farm - Snazaroo Palettes (http://sillyfarm.com/snazaroopalettes.html)
Ben Nye MagiCake 6-color primary palette - $21.60 - PNTA On-Line - Detail (http://pnta.com/detail.aspx?ID=2464)
Kryolan AquaColor 6-color primary palette - $23 - Silly Farm - Kryolan Palettes (http://sillyfarm.com/kryolanpalettes.html)
Mehron Paradise 8-color Basic Palette - $25 - Silly Farm - Snazaroo Palettes (http://sillyfarm.com/paradisepalettes.html)
Wolfe 12-color essential palette - $30 - Silly Farm - Wolfe Face Art & FX Paints Palettes (http://sillyfarm.com/wolfepalettes.html)
So from $15-$30 someone can get a sampling of basic colors from any of the major makeup companies. All those prices except Ben Nye MagiCake are from Silly Farm, Ben Nye MagiCake is from PNTA. Silly Farm doesn't have MagiCake and PNTA ONLY has MagiCake or I'd quote both stores - both are *fabulous* to work with!
I do not like Snazaroo, personally. But it is light years ahead of any acrylic or wal-mart "Palmer" brand product. And you can try it out for the cost of a pizza... Two pizzas and you get my favorite product, Mehron's Paradise to try out!
Hopscotch the clown 06-07-2008, 08:50 AM Hi guys, Just a little tid bit. My friend had the crayons (for a long long time) and she probably still has some left over that she occasionally uses for freebees. They work fine, Markie I think that is a good idea just put them in a box with individual sections and they will serve their purpose. I did use those walmart face paints ( many years ago) and they are ok.I think they are a calcium carbonate base W/ dye, which sounds pretty harmless to me. Probably made overseas and not sure if it is that great but it is sure better than acrylics. I like all cosmetic grade brands of face paints and I use all of them for different gigs, or occcasions depending on how much I am having to haul with me. Also what kind of designs I will be doing. I like starblends for tots because they can be a little fearful when it comes to somebody painting on their face,it seems to relax them a bit more. Then I'll finish design with snaz ,paradise, kryolan,or wolfe bros.Love all of them. I did buy a kryolan day glow pallete which I was disapointed with until I found out use a sponge with them works ten times better than a brush. (brushing on made paint seem translucent) so now I only use sponge technique with those paints.
Plywood 06-07-2008, 09:14 AM I got a Klutz face painting activity pack at a local Michael's store that comes with a starter pallet of Wolfe Bros. face paints and a great book with lots of simple ideas for face painting. I highly recommend it. I'm sure you could find it online, and possibly at a local craft store.
Good luck!
P.S. I don't like the Palmer's paints either, they tend to flake off after just a couple of hours.
Here's the link: Klutz - Face Painting (http://www.klutz.com/catalog/product/1115?utm_source=Google&utm_medium=CPC&utm_term=klutz%20face%20paint&utm_content=1402535211&utm_campaign=Top%20Performers)
Markie 06-07-2008, 11:33 AM Kryolan AquaColor dayglows brush wonderfully well, IMHO. The only problem is they get chunky, clumpy, and over-wet easily.
Yup, the Klutz book comes with Wolfe Bros unless you get a really old copy, which has Kryolan AquaColor with it. It's way overpriced for the amount of makeup and the quality of the book, IMHO... but I'm glad you like it!
Fitzwilly 06-07-2008, 09:29 PM When did the Klutz book change to Wolfe Brothers? That is a great bost to them, even though they are already doing wonderfully well. The Kryolan paints were not very appealing visually, the colors were not bright, but loked very dingy.
Markie 06-07-2008, 10:21 PM I want to say some time last year Fitz, but I'm not really sure on that.
Personally, I like AquaColor. Not as much as Paradise, but I like it. It comes in oodles and oodles of colors, I don't know what exact ones came with that Klutz book but I think they weren't the greatest, brightest, most saturated colors. Sadly, I don't think Klutz picked the best Wolfe colors they could've either (not the colors I'd have picked if I could only have 6 colors for sure...)
Plywood 06-07-2008, 10:44 PM The colors that come with the Klutz book now, are red, yellow, blue, black, white and green. I'm sure they went with those colors so that users could mix all the colors they would need from the basics.
Markie 06-07-2008, 10:51 PM The problem is that that's such a misconception. Red, yellow, and blue pigments produce a very limited gamut. That's why modern printing uses cyan, magenta, yellow, and black instead. Even then, you can't mix up the colors you can imagine.
If I had to pick 6 colors to do all my painting with, they'd have to be: Light pink, purple, orange, teal, white, and black. Yes, I know there's colors I couldn't mix from those and that's OK... If they could do an 8-color I'd add red, yellow, and dark green, and remove orange (since that's mixable)
BennyO 06-15-2008, 08:46 AM Hehehe... Deffinately good idea to test it all out. I have BenNye crayons but they are oil based for my own face. (Not that I use the crayons any more).
I once accidently mixed one of my white clown sponges in with my face painting brushes and when I went to paint someone up as a spiderman the childs face went pink. It took me a second to work out why then quickly thought about my best course of action.
So I just painted over it but I still feal sorry for the mother who discovers that her childs face is all pale and water refuses to wash it clean.
