Does anyone have any good walk around gags that I would be able to use in a county fair setting??

Thanks..........Punkin

Act like you are giving away helium balloons, but just have the balloon tied to your finger with a string hanging out the bottom of your hand. when people grab the string you walk away with the balloon and put another string in your hand.

Walk around with a flashlight offering free shoe shines, when someone says yes you shine the light on their shoes. This is even more effective at night.

Go around announing that you have free donut seeds, then pass out fruit loops.

How about getting some all in one underwear and walking around looking for your clothes ( keep your big shoes on)

get several cards on one have the word 'BEST' written add a long string and let it hang out of your pocket, then get some one to pul it out and tell them 'you bring out the best in me'; There are several card gags, "do you want to see something?" and pull out a card with something, you and also have, something else and nothing on cards , your can incorporate you business cards "do you want to see my card?" and have cards with My Card, My Old Card , My new card, then give them your real card. great to drag out in front of a small crowd and easily carried.

My favorites include a box that says "DANGER! Baby Rattlers and when you open it there are baby rattles inside.
I do the balloon giveaway idea with a vase of flowers and hand them the pipecleaner stem and when I walk away, the bloom stays on my finger! It goes over very well. I also put a squeaker in my glove so as I'm letting go of the stem a squeak is heard which always gives the recipient a surprise!
Another is a box with "My Toyota" printed on it. When opened, you see a toy Yoda. I found that the best source for Yoda is E-Bay. If you can find a Pizza Hut Yoda Cup it works great. I redressed the cup with a fabric robe to make it look more like a toy than a cup. :-)

Watch your local thrift store for a small suitcase, Attach a clear plastic sleeve (office supply store 8 1/2 by 11 size) with contact cement. You can now put a new sign in for different walk arounds. Signs can be made on your computer or out of construction paper. A couple of my favorites are the best seat in the house, (show a toilet seat) offer people a chance to have the best seat in the house. Or get an old plate and Hot glue an ear of corn (dried, the kind ofter sold for squirrel feeders.)Make a sign that says free chicken dinner and go around hawking it. Baby rattler and my "toy yoda" works well with this also.
The idea behind the reusable case simple, It takes less room to haul one case (which could hold all you walkaround props loose) Than several cases with a different prop in each one. Put velcro in the case to hold things down.

Another great one for parades is the neck tie salesmen. A 1"by 2" piece of wood attached to a handle so it looks like a big "T". Drill holes across the top and attach lengths of clothesline or nylon rope tied off as nooses (why not, that's what a tie feels like) them take foam board and make a sandwich board (goes over your front and back) that says Neck Tie salesmen...

A good walkaround for two clowns is to clothespin a rabbit by it's ears to a rope and carry it around for a Hare Dryer!

That's a great idea! I'm gonna give that one a try this Saturday. I got a small paper bag, and I'm trying to decide if I should label it or just give them out as the kids come to get balloons. I even thought about putting them inside the see through balloons as part of a toy maybe.

Any other suggestions?

I also like the one about giving the balloons away with the string separate from the balloon tied to your finger. What happens if the same kid comes back to you for the balloon? Do you go ahead and make another one for him? What would you say about the first one tied to your finger?

Thanks!

I like to go around with an oversize pencil and a large pad. I offer people free portraits and as I draw I keep putting my thumb out as if I were measuring the person against it. I then draw a simple picture of my thumb, hand it to the person and move on.

Another goog suitace gag is the morning paper. Cut a piece wood Think scrap paneling, and old dresser drawer bottom.something light and thin. Then cut it to fit snugly in the case. Attatch a cheap toilet paper holder, wall mount tpye and hand a roll of TP on it. Walk around and ask people if they have seen the morning paper yet....

Then show it took them

Give away foam letters - there are some great puns:

"B" Would you like a freebie?
"I" Someone gave me a black eye (black foam)
"P" Use a tube and make a "pea shooter"
"X" use a feather duster to make a clean-x (KleenX)
"V" Gravy (grey foam)

There are others I can't remember off the top of my head.

You can use a Sizzx machine to die-cut the letters (do a web search on Sizzx)

One of our clowns came up with:

(Make a bouquet of long-stemmed NOSES - using pipe cleaners and foam clown noses)

Push a cart with a sign that reads:

"One dozen Long Stemmed Noses
Picked Fresh Just For You"

I figure you could do the same gag with the stem that breaks away as you
pretend to give one to a spectator...

Here I am giving away our best ideas =(

Get a large foam ring (used to make holiday wreaths) Big enough to easily go over your head .And Nose! This is the voice of experence talking :? Attach a foam "Jewel" cover in papier Mache (for strength) and paint Gold and then paint the jewel any color you want. Wear it around your neck.

Make a sign that says ring around the collar. Or, ask people if the ever have this problem? You know, Ring around the collar

For all you Cowboy Clowns out there, Next time y'er in the Toy shop, buy stuffed animal snake. Yup! A snake. Attach a baby's rattle to it and you have y'erself a pet RATTLESNAKE.

I like to use this in a production box I have. When I start to pull it out, the kids yell "A SNAKE" and I pull it all the way out and say, "Yup! A Rattle-Snake"

Always gets a laugh.

just thought of another idea a larger than life butterfly net and one of those old insect sprayers. the ones that look like a large pump witha can attached to the bottom. and make a set of big wings for a dog or even attach a big foam inect to a stiff wire like a hanger straightend out and put it on your person somehow so it is either stuck out infront of you or so it is following you and you are triin to catch it

Thinking about props for christmas parade, what about using a noodle to make a large pencil and go around asking for paper to write out your list to Santa Claus? Oi if you had a partner who was carrring a large foam sheet that looked like writing paper on his back and you couldn't keep up with him to write any thing down? Or selling [pretend] christmas present ie 14 carrot necklace [I made one for my sister one year], Reindeer antlers[ for the woman who needs to attract her husband during deer hunting season]. Just a few thoughts.

Love the 14 carrot necklace, Sue. Bet that would be funny for a girl's birthday party gag gift!

The ice fishing is a good one too, easy and simple but effective.

I finally picked some ornamental corn and I'm gonna make my chicken dinner plates this weekend!

I got a ton of corn husks tough....anything else that can be used for these as props?

saphireSue

chcken dinner plates?.. It this the one where you put the corn on the plates?. I've seen it in bags and sold as a complete chichen dinner.

Another gift we give at christmas is hill billy bubble bath, it a can of pinto beans with the instruction to eat one hour before bathing but if you want more bubbles double the serving and wait 2 hrs.

One of the things I carry is a little baggie stuffed with a bunch of give a ways.

Freebies: I ask if anyone wants a freebie. Everyone loves a freebie ya know. I then take out a free B and give it to them ad walk away.

Brownie: I again ask who wants a free brownie. I pull out a brown E hand it to them and walk away.

Black eye: This one I use with the boys. I ask someone if I can give them a black eye in a funny manner. I then hand them a black I.

Pink eye: I will usually start by saying another person gave me the pink eye and I don’t want it anymore and I try and give it to someone. I hand them a pink I and walk away.

These letter gags are made out of those thin sheets of foam you can get at craft centers. I cut mine using a Sizzux cutter and the appropriate letter. These cutters are a bit expensive but in the long run pay off when you can give out thousands of these at a fraction of the cost of those clown stickers you buy by the roll.

Another great walk around is a rubber ball spun on a parasol. You attach a piece of heavy monofilament to a rubber, or hard plastic ball with a cup hook, attach the other end to the top center post of the parasol. open, and twirl. It's an impressive looking trick, and when you take a bow, and close it then the people see the gimminck. always a good one for a laugh.

During my first parade I pulled a rug behind me (attached to a rope in my one hand) and then used a little broom to sweep stuff under it. All the adults got the gig, many of the kids where like...What's he doing?... :?: ...anyway, it worked for me. I wish I could say it was my idea but another Klown from my Shrine Unit gave me the idea. I'm going to use it again in the Washington's Birthday parade in Alexandria, Virginia.

I read about another...you dab a ping pong ball with the same glue used for attaching the red nose. You put a dab on the outside of your nose too. Keep them both clean and dry. During a slow down in the parade you "balance" the ball on your nose. You walk around like you are having a hard time with it, but somehow succeeding. When the crowd claps you bow and the ball stays on your nose.

My wife and I did this gag a couple of years ago in a parade and I still meet people that remember me just for this gag.

My clown wife, Penelope is walking down the street talking on the phone. You could use a large phone handset, or just a regular phone. Penelope used a girly princess phone that we found in a thrift shop.
Anyway she is just strolling down the street talking to her best friend on the phone. Blah, blah, blah. And a wire is running out of the phone and going back about 25 feet to me.

I am walking down the street lugging, and stumbling around with a telephone pole. The wire is attached to the telephone pole of course. And I am wearing a big sign on my back that says "Mobile Phone".

This gag got tons of laughs. A lot kids just thought it was funny that a clown was talking on the phone in the middle of the street. But as I came stumbling along it definitely was a good punchline for kids and adults both.

I made the telephone pole out of a carpet tube that I got at my local Home Depot. They just gave it to me for free. And with a little creative carboard carving, walla! I had a telephone pole. Not too heavy. But watch out, acting like it's heavy and stumbling around for a mile and half with it is a little bit of a workout. Its tough being a clown sometimes.
I saw this gag with a foam telephone pole once. I can't imagine how hard it was to make that.

to me the natural place for a clown is out and about and walking round comedy is in everything
from trips and falls to mimiking people who walk past you (i find for the best reaction from people watching try choosing and mimiking someone who completely blanks you as you walk past)

then there is the (once again very obvious) chasing people with cream pies you dont even necessarily have to actually throw any at anyone some of the biggest laughs ive got have been for merely chasing someone down a street with a pie

i think the most important thing for any street performer is to enjoy yourself i could go out in the street right now not in costume and with no prepared gags or skits and be happy in the knowledge i could both enjoy myself and entertain the public :)

Scruffy
02-21-2005, 11:34 AM
Bob, do you generally wear something to distinguish yourself as a street performer? Reason I ask is some of those things could get you beaten up here in the states, I guess it depends on who you choose for a "Victim".

As Sir. Uppy I usually tie my main gag into the events theme such as for St. Patricks day i had a sign that said SHAMROCKS and had foam rocks that I bounced off my umbrella a nd scooped back up with it.

Sir Uppy again, I love parades but I don't limit myself to my main gag. I also carry along support props like an umbrella for blowing me along to help me catch back up with the parade or to protect our police officers from the rain on a sunny day or the sun on a rainy day. I also find a torch flashlight is great for catching up with an escaping parade I just hold it out and run torch relay style.
Other walkaround I've used are 1 pin on play money to wear your green, 2 I painted a big box red and painted the words fire crackers on it and painted some saltines with flames coming out of it. 3 for the valley of flowers parade i got a circle from those fancy car window shades and pinned an e shape of artificial flowers and went around looking for Val
"Have you seen Val? I've Got her E of flowers."

A squeaker in your glove...and casually fake twisting your finger in your ear as you squeak...call it wax buildup...

Also the small cards work well...like when I tell people that I want them to see a picture of my kids...yep...here's my pride and joy....My pride and joy which is a picture of a bottle of joy dish soap and pride cleaning liquid...

or here are my kids...(a picture of two baby goats...)

or hey wanna see my girlfriend...here's a picture of my honey in a bikini...and its a picture of a jar of honey (the kind thats in a little bear container) with a bikini wrapped around it...)

and here's one that's worked well for me lately...I just start talking aimlessly to nobody in particular...and when I hear people making too much noise around me...I say...shhhhh...I'm using my blue tooth...its a rather large tooth...that I painted blue...

I did this with my "freshly picked noses" I had a foam clown nose on a flower stem but when I would hand it to someone I would ask "would you like a freshly picked nose" and when they took it, I left them with only a green pipe cleaner. They loved this. I'm always looking for flower things.

LOL! I have never heard of that before, but it's awesome! That would make a terrific walk around for some of the small-town events we do around here.

I do one with a pool noodle made into a disposible razor and a big sign that says Shave the Whales. Also the one I did for our Clown Week show, Attach a small rug to your costume with a piece of fishing line. And small broom. As you walk the parade route sweep the street as you go put down the rug and sweep the dirt under the rug, pat it down with your foot and then walk away. When the fishing line gets tight the rug will follow you. Walk a little ways pick up the rug and start over at a different section of the parade. This can also be done once as a quick walkaround.

I mentioned my Dominoes pizza earlier in this thread. But since I've gotten so smart and now know how to post pictures, I thought I'd show you what it looks like.

You are getting to be right smart for a fermented cucumber, Pickles.

What do you use for crust and sauce?

Thanks, Luki! (I think.)

The entire crust is made of foam but painted to look like sauce and crust. My friend Jingles made it for me.

That's what we did on Saturday for the Chippewa Falls Clear Water parade. It was interesting, because spectators either thought it was hilarious or they just stared blankly at us as though they didn't get it.

Fantastic stuff here! Me and a couple other performers are doing a street act walk around tonight to develop some characters. These have been really helpful. I'm just about to burn a playing card for RD's bit. So much to choose from!

This is probably the singularly most useful thread I've come across, yet! And I've found some good ones!

Has anybody tried any of the old-fashioned ones? Like the guy with the lawn mower chasing the girl in the grass skirt? Every time she's seen again, her skirt is shorter and shorter. Soon she's wearing a bikini and the mower is full! Or the woman with the baby who stops to look at every man and back at her baby? I was just wondering what kind of reaction these got.
Some of the old-fashioned ones are equally hilarious. If I haven't heard it, it's new to me!

I'm working on a big cartoony box camera...prop section

JiNgLeS

another good walk around is to make a oversized camera with a place in back that you can put a bunch of pictures or drawings (stick figures ,animals ect.)and go around taking pictures of ppl pull one out from the back of the camera and give it to them

I don't know if anyone has suggested this one or not (I haven't read all nine pages yet). I learned it from The Marx Bros. You have a deck of cards and you walk up to a spectator and ask them to pick a card. They automatically think you're going to show them a trick. When they pick a card tell them, "Keep it. Don't worry, I have 51 left!" This also works in reverse, if someone is trying to do a "pick a card" trick for you, pick one and stick it in your pocket, tell them thanks and walk away. :o

I'm going to be doing my first "thing" It's a combination parade and then I'll do some walk around....how many gags do you think I should have prepared for 1 full day of fair type stuff??

I had an Idea for a gag. I was wondering if anyone had any other ideas how I can pull it off or if it has been done before. My friend was talking about a 10 K run and I though that would be a great thing for a parade. K K K K K K K K K K and then special K. Anyone care to put in their two cents?

That could be funny like a large train of foam letter K's on rollers that you pull behind you. You would be in a joggers outfit (clown type of course) with your sign 10 K run. The last one could be a giant box of Special K on rollers connected to the K line.
That could be cute but may take some doing. If you can find old roller skates or use the wheels from skate boards attached to a small board and the letters K could be attached to the board bases somehow. The big Special K box could just be a regular box correct shape and size and painted with the special K logo copy facsimile. It might be easier to pull a 5 K run behind you rather than trying to keep all 10 from getting tipped over or tangled up. But that, Lilly, is a cleaver idea. I may have to try this one out for our next year summer parade. We always have a 5K and 10K run. Our town would totally get this now to go about finding a comic joggers outfit.

You could pin big foam Ks on your outfit (make it a clown jogging suit) or string the Ks on a long string with you and another clown holding each end ... taking the 10 Ks out for a run.

Or the last clown could be the giant Special K box. Yeah! I LIKE it.

Here is a cute idea that I use for giveaways... mini clothespins with a small washer stuck in it (where it opens)... A Washer & Dryer

You just tell someone you have something for them, a new washer & dryer. Someone came in to where my hubby works and gave him one. He suggested I make some to carry with me and everyone loves them. Some of the younger people don't get it, maybe they have never seen a clothespin before? Who knows.

Another gift we give at christmas is hill billy bubble bath, it a can of pinto beans with the instruction to eat one hour before bathing but if you want more bubbles double the serving and wait 2 hrs.

Hillbilly Bubble Bath
Eat one serving and wait one hour
then bath as usual.
For more bubbles double serving
and wait 2 hours.
Don't know it this will show up but here is what I put together and pasted to a small can of Pork and Beans.
Thanks for the great idea.

I've seen the same thing. Was given one once and was told it was a "Hillbilly washer and drier." Thought it was great. I've passed it along to a couple of my mentor clowns since their backstory is that their from a small Appalachian town. They loved the idea.

My guess why the younger people don't get it is that they might not understand the small metal donut thingy is called a "washer". Could also be they don't know what clothespins were for.

hmmm... wonder if a cell phone with a rotary dial would be a funny prop?

Another gag I planned to do at the county fair this last week but never had a crowd of kids stay around for long. I planned to do a patter about making Hobo Stew. I had a yellow kitchen towel in one of my pockets and I planned to ask the audience what could we use to make Hobo Stew and then each time they said something I would pretend add it to the pot. You could use a five gallon bucket as your pot with the words Hobo Stew painted on the side. I would lead them first to say onion and then pull out the towel pretend to cry. Then after each addition get the kids to say the chant:
Doubling bubbling, boiling brew
Stir me up a batch of that Hobo Stew ( mimic stirring)
As they say things use that time to start rolling the yellow towel and at the end of the gag. Say they forgot the best part: The chicken and pull the towel out to make a chicken.
Here is a link of how to make a towel chicken You tube video. YouTube - Tea towel chicken (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8m4MiB-QEQA&feature=related)
If anybody says chicken early on you would have to be fast rolling up the towel but it is pretty easy to do and you could I guess end the gag there. Or you could pre roll the towel and put it in your pocket ready to go. Then just skip the onion part.
The last line is O.K. everyone eat. When your through I'll wash but you have to dry and unfold the towel and hand to someone near by.
I was going to couple this with a few chicken songs: Comin Round the Mountain and It Ain't gonna rain no more.
