I'm aiming for something just like this:
http://home.no.net/discgolf/galvanize.jpg
Here's what I think of buying:
Ben Nye Clown white
Ben Nye white powder
Black lip color
And a couple of black cream pencils
Should I rather go for paint based black? I'm completely new this :)
Any advice is wastly appreciated!
btw, if you know a webshop that ships cheap to, or lies in europe, let me know, as I live in Norway.
Gilbert 02-08-2005, 12:17 PM Each of us have our own preferences with makeup. Some like to use face paints and others prefer grease paint. You will need to experiment and find what you get on with best. There are many factors which change such as allergies, skin types, the feel or smell of the makeup, how it is applied etc etc etc. Buy small ammounts and find what works best for you.

Scruffy 02-08-2005, 02:13 PM Ben Nye Is great makeup. Get the Clown white Lite.It is a very brite white, Also get the neutra set powder. It will keep the black from looking greyish. The creme color pencil/crayon are great. Ben Nye is great stuff and most people have not allergy problems with it. But, there's always someone.
Buy the smallest sizes you can to test them with .Mehron also makes excellent products.
shady_lamps 02-08-2005, 03:10 PM I take it your a fan of the Chemical Brothers?
BTW Welcome to the board :D
saphireSue 02-08-2005, 10:58 PM I like Ben nye and proface, myself to add my 2 cents.
I take it your a fan of the Chemical Brothers?
They're allright *they were better before coff coff*
Get the Clown white Lite
Isn't the lite much more expensive? Is it really worth it?
Some like to use face paints and others prefer grease paint.
What is best to aquire this effect? Paints or Cream color pencil/crayon?

Gaah, ill webdesign. Any us shops that ship overseas at a reasonable rate?
Thanks for the fast response, even more info would be nice. I think I must nail it the first time, as shipping is expensive and that I can't buy for more than 30usd. Not to forget that it'll take some time before I get it. Alas, I need to know -exactly- what to buy.
Scruffy 02-09-2005, 04:58 AM Of all the Products clown white is the thickest. I know on my face I can always tell where the white is The lite is a very "lightweight" makeup and it is a more brilliant white than normal white.
Note: regular is fine too.
So, how many full coverings will 2.5oz (the biggest one?) of clown white lite supply?
Scruffy 02-09-2005, 12:53 PM That depends on wether you are doing a full white face or not. The coverage is good. According to the Ben Nye catalog they say 75-125 full faces. For me. I have an 8 ounce can of steins white that I'm working on about 18 years after I bought it. But I don't need much. I go through black like water through a funnel.
with the lite, it feels more natural and less like you are wearing makeup.
I'm doing full covering.
Could the super white powder be better than the neutral one for a more intense white color?
(I'm looking for max contrast between black and white).
white:
2.5 oz clown white lite
1.75oz superwhite powder
black:
black lipcolor
creme color black pencil -or- a pot with black creme color (for applying with a brush?)
I have a few brushes, any other tools that will come in handy?
And yeah, I still need webshop recommendations.
A shop in europe might be good regarding shipping, but also need a shop that has everything I need.
Scruffy 02-09-2005, 07:23 PM Yes. THe white powder will give you maximum brite white but use the neutra set on the black. White powder on black gives a grey appearance and don't use baby powder. I used it many years ago when everyone did. There is a better way now. Use the specialized powders.
allright, so the best way is two powders, but is using just the neutral one good enough? would save me some money (and effort).
Sorry for picking on every detail.. I'll show you how it turns out later, promise.
I don't see how to edit posts, so I'll just post another one, this is approx. what I aim to look like:
http://home.no.net/discgolf/meclown.jpg
It's a photo of me quickly photoshopped (now that's something I .do. have experience with)
Scruffy 02-09-2005, 08:41 PM Yes. The neutra set pwder will set both no problem Its is also less wastefull that baby pwder. Never put it in a sock. (Old trick) too wasteful. use a puff.
shady_lamps 02-10-2005, 11:18 AM must say that if you turn out like you in the photo, you'll look great!! Well Done!
I see that the Mehron clown white lite is much cheaper than ben nye, 8oz cost only 9USD.
Is it just as good?
Scruffy 02-10-2005, 08:43 PM I haven't tried it but the colors are good. Just avoid Steins makeup. It's not like the old stuff I have. It was the best in it's day.
Mehron is a good make up just dont put it on too thick put it on in thin layers just enough to cover and it will last all day
saphireSue 02-10-2005, 09:40 PM I'm a white face and for me it's best to have both powders, the white will cover imperfectionsa nd really make the white more brighter, but can only be used on white as it will fade out other colors, the neutra will set the other colors, you can neutral for both, but if your going for the brighter white the whites bettter for it.
Scruffy 02-11-2005, 05:27 AM I agree with Sue. I use the neutra set for everything. But, I also use very little white makup.
But have anyone tried both mehron .and. ben nye clown white lite?
Anyhow, thanks, I guess I know what to get now. Must just decide if I should go for brush or pencils.
Still not sure where to get it though, the uk websites was ill, any good american ones that ship international?
Any difference between mehron and ben nye jumbo pencils?
Sooo:
8oz mehron clown white lite OR 2oz ben nye clown white lite (expensive!)
3oz superwhite powder
2oz neutral powder
Black jumbo sized pencil
Black lipcolor
pot of black creme color
Do I need a fine pencil?
I've found that http://www.ec-securehost.com/cgi-bin/WouldYouBelieve
has all the stuff I need, but the 2.5oz clown white lite is quite expensive at 13.50USD.
The problem is, where can I find all the things I need, and what should I get to not exceed my limit of 30usd excluding shipping (if I buy for more than that, I must pay 25% tax) :) This is hard.
Ok, now I've come up (with much help from Scruffy), a final? list of what to buy:
M6105 Mehron Clown White Lite 8 oz $9.00 ea. 1 $9.00
M618X Mehron ProPencil Jumbo-Black - M6186 $6.00 ea. 1 $6.00
M61XX Mehron Grease Color Cup .5 oz-Black - M6136 $2.95 ea. 1 $2.95
M6205 Mehron Pro Pencil Dual Sharpener $4.00 ea. 1 $4.00
M625X Mehron UltraFine Setting Powder, 0.6 oz-Neutral - M6255 $3.75 ea. 1 $3.75
M625X Mehron UltraFine Setting Powder, 0.6 oz-Ultra White - M6250 $3.75 ea. 1 $3.75 Order Subtotal: $29.45
clownantics.com has a everything, and also a ugly, but functionaly website.
Brushes etc I can buy where I live :)
But, 0.6oz ultra white powder seems a bit too litte, any thoughts?
WHERE IS THE EDIT BUTTON?!
saphireSue 02-13-2005, 10:29 PM Not to mess with your list, I've used both melron and Ben nye, the melron is a good start but when you can get the ben nye, I like it much better, It's lighter on the skin, comes off easier, and not as heavy, for me Melron tended to feel heavy, I'm older and have a few wrinkles around the eyes, the ben nye seem to hide this better, not be as heavy and my skin feel better after I use it than it did with the Melron, also seemed easier to set. I also use Ben nye pencils, and powders.
So the Mehron clown white lite feels heavy?
And the ben nye pencils are also better?
saphireSue 02-14-2005, 07:01 PM just like each person's skin type is different, how people feel about their make up varies, but on my face the melron felt heavier and greasier [grease paint   ] At first Ben nye felt dryer and harder to put on, but once i got used to it, it was easier, and I felt the difference the first time I used it. If you get the white light, pat it one one layer at a time, at first you will not think it's white enough but once you have good coverage, set with the white setting powder and it become very white, I've been in make up 12 hours before with no need to touch up or redo. I used Melron for 3 years before switching and it's good too, I just prefer the Ben nye.
Scruffy 02-14-2005, 07:49 PM Sue advice is good. But, bear in mind thought that opinions are like belly buttons. Everyone has one.
you will try other makeups and products as you go along. I have products in my makeup case that I no longer use The containers you have chosen are small and willneed to be reordered if you do this alot. The only thing that I would look for is a smaller clown white. But you should be safe with the Lite. Mehron is good stuff so is Nye. I use a little of both. I'm currently using Steins clown white. Mehron black color cup, ben nye creme crayons black and white, steins blue, steins carmine red, and ben nye neutra set. I also use a proface barrier spray.
As I have said before I will stop using what steins it has as I finish it up. However, the Carmine Red that I use on my cheeks I can't find a Mehron or Ben Nyye product that I like. So, I may have to buy a lifetime supply of Steins #15 Carmine red.
Allright, the order is sendt, 31USD in shipping though, kinda expensive.
So in a week or two I'll be ready to make my first attempts with clown makeup.
Thanks alot for the help. I'll be sending you some lutefisk as gifts.
saphireSue 02-16-2005, 05:03 PM can't wait to see ya.
Scruffy 02-16-2005, 07:09 PM Keep the lutefisk. Send coffee and krummkake That'll do just fine.
Ok, here's how I turned out, first attempt, will try again today:

Clown white lite is nice, I should have gotten a small pencil, but I'm happy with what I bought.
I will experiment more with designs, this is only the beginning.

Scruffy 02-25-2005, 07:14 PM Looks great! I wish my first job had looked that good.
For the fine points at your mouth and eyes, use a fine artist brush with the creme cup. Great Job,Grkn!
saphireSue 02-25-2005, 07:34 PM very unique
Tinks 02-25-2005, 10:39 PM I love it very unique! <applause> What I'd really like to see is your hair slicked back with gel. I think it would add a bit more to the character. Try it u might like it.

Jobee 02-25-2005, 11:46 PM I'm still trying to figure out how dancing in clown makeup turned into the new club thing.
I think the chemical brothers and David Lachapelle has got something to do with it, they helped spread the concept of Krump dancing to the mainstream.
But even before that in 2003, Shake city 101 got released, the first? Krump dancing movie http://www.fattvideos.com/dvd_video/55149/SHAKE_CITY_101_KRUMP_DANCE
Famous director/photographer David Lachapelle got a taste of krump dancing when making "Dirty" for Aguliera, and he made a film about it later on. "Enter the dragon":
http://www.davidlachapelle.com/film.shtml
Apparently Krumping is a offbreed or the evolution of clowning (the dance style), only slower and more aggressive. Clowning is said to have started in 92:
I started dressing like a clown [for kids’ parties] ad combining it with hip-hop moves, and then in 1992 began teaching it to kids in South Central to channel their negative energy.
“There are a lot of African influences with the face paint,” LaChapelle notes. “It’s like African war paint.” Maybe it was originally just that, but along the line someone mixed it up with clown makeup? Or maybe it's the other way around. Hard to tell.
Anyhow, I think it's a great dancestyle, and the more people that bring diversity to the streets or dancefloors the better. I'm wondering if it will catch on in Europe soon, it wouldn't surprise me.
btw, It's really hard to do, you must really "go nuts" to get the required intensity into your dancing. To make it krump.
And btw, it's not original.
But I might try to do better later.
