View Full Version : My shirt turned black!
Nettie Belle 09-13-2008, 08:35 PM I did a birthday party today and did lots of face painting. I was just sick when I looked at my shirt at the end of the party. It was literally BLACK, I guess from reaching over the paints so often. This has never happened before, but maybe because it was a soggy day. Anyway, I've soaked it several times, in Oxy Clean and Spray 'n Wash, and washed it once, and right now, it's soaking in "Spray 'n Wash". Do you have any other suggestions?
It's a shirt by Mooseburger, and I hate to lose it, and I'm not giving up on it easily. My next step is to remove all the trim and dye it royal blue and put new yellow trim on it. At least that way I would still have the shirt. I would just get a new yellow one.
It's still wet so the stains are not completely set in. Let me know if you have any secret home remedies.
Christopher Clown 09-13-2008, 08:39 PM Oh No! I don't really have any suggestions for stain removers other that Shout Spray Stain remover...
I think you've discovered one of the reasons why I do not do face painting.
Sir Toony Van Dukes 09-13-2008, 09:04 PM I had heard somewhere that you need to let it soak in the stain remover for a while. Don't just start washing right away. And I also heard, don't put it in the dryer until the stain is gone. Other than that, I can't say what else to try.
Fitzwilly 09-14-2008, 01:10 AM I'd call Tricia at the office first thing Monday. What brand of black are you using? We might be able to talk to Mama Clown or another face painter with a lot of experience as well.
Artsy 09-14-2008, 07:54 AM Depends on which black brand you are using.
USE COLD WATER first
Tincture of Green Soap (this is the medical soap) You can find this in a pharmacy but it isn't shelved everywhere. It also does a wondwerful job of cleaning my brushes gently and maintaining their softness and lustre.
saphireSue 09-14-2008, 07:59 AM just don't let it soak with the oxy-clean to long, it can lighten close too. I've lost a shirt letting the oxy stuff soak to long,
Sassafras 09-14-2008, 08:01 AM If worse comes to worse, you can get the RIT color remover to bleach it white, and then re-dye it with the appropriate RIT color. It's not the best solution, but if you want it back to it's original color, it might be worth the effort.

This is most likely a special order item... unless you are talking about Betadine Wash (which is green) We have that an a medical soap called "Hibiclense" out on the first aid asile in our Walmart Pharmacy...
Possibly call your pharmacy and see if they can order you the soap. Ususally we can get special items in a day or so.
pixcoco 09-14-2008, 08:36 AM I find the stain remover that mixes the 2 formulas as you apply it works best on everything.
If you get face paint (or should I say when) you really need to make sure it stays wet until you can wash it. I you are using acriylic (yuk) you are out of luck.
good luck
Bumbles 09-14-2008, 08:38 AM There is a product out called Gonzoo. Pattycake and I use it for everything we spill, it's fantastic even gets out red wine. The website isTile Guard - Tile Guard Home (http://www.GONZOCORP.com).
Prestige 09-14-2008, 08:57 AM I normally swear by this site Stain Removal and Treatment at Stain Expert (UK) (http://www.stainexpert.co.uk/)
Nettie Belle 09-14-2008, 09:11 AM These were Snazaroo face paints. You have given me some great tips ... thank you. I think I will call Tricia on Monday. Good idea.
Anyway, thanks for all the tips ... I'll let you know what the outcome is.
Nettie Belle 09-14-2008, 10:53 AM Latest update ... I splattered it with primary colors and it's now my official face painting shirt. :D

and why I buy shirts at Walmart. Replacing a $15 dress shirt hurts a lot less than from a clown costumer.

As I found out when I got my face paints on my smock. The only thing that took that acrylic paint out was MEK, methyl ethyl ketone. It also took some of the color out of my smock but the slightly-faded spot looks better than black acrylic on yellow cotton fabric. If your shirt is white, there's no problem there.

I have never heard of anything that will remove red food coloring in light colored carpet...Will Gonzo?:???:
Fifi D. Clown 09-14-2008, 09:43 PM Nettie Belle - I had the same problem with Snazaroo Black paint on the arm of one of my clown shirts. I didn't notice it right away, so didn't treat it immediately. But it still didn't come out after soaking and stain removers.
It's weird, but it seems that other Snazaroo colors do come with a normal wash, but the black does not.
Sorry I'm no help at all.....
Nettie Belle 09-14-2008, 10:18 PM By treating the stain right away, I was able to get most of it out, except for some spots. Small enough now that the splattered paint hides the spots, but the spots were too obvious on the plain shirt. I would never have worn it with the spots like they were.
Christopher Clown 09-14-2008, 10:33 PM So can we see your splatter painted shirt?
Nettie Belle 09-20-2008, 10:00 AM Yup ... here it is:

Prestige 09-20-2008, 10:04 AM That looks really kick ass :)
Violet 09-20-2008, 10:14 AM That is beautiful!
Sir Toony Van Dukes 09-20-2008, 07:57 PM Gee, I would have never guessed that you stained the shirt and made it turn black. Just be careful that you don't get more paint on it again.
SuitcaseSam 09-21-2008, 12:22 AM I don't know how true it is but my buddy's mom when we were growing up always swore by hairspray as a stain remover. She used it on blood stains from bloody noses (backyard football) and swore by it.

Ah-ha, mademoiselle! At last, you look like a French artiste! How beauteeful for one who paints a face!
