View Full Version : Picking my nose...
Teemo 11-15-2008, 11:15 AM I got the go-ahead from my mom to make up a list of noses that I might want for my birthday (Thanksgiving). I'm looking primarily at Proknows for this, as I've worn some of their noses before and they are very popular.
I'm looking, probably, for a red nose, and would like something kinda round or oval ( oval on the X axis, not y or z ) I have a medium nose (I guess), but I can't really see what the noses look like from the pictures given, or how they scale to a person's face from the pictures.
For all those pros who know how the nose goes, what would your suggestions be?
I've gotta say, the best way to figure this out is to go to a store that sells them and try them on. You're right in going with the ProNose I think they're the best personally, having tried both. If you're a mime, and I may be wrong with this, but I'd pick a nose that wouldn't overpower your face. One thing I have noticed with the ProNose line is that they're all shiny... My tramp clown is a very neutral colored clown and I think the Howle nose goes best with it simply because it isn't a 'shiny' red nose. As for staying stuck to my face though, I think the ProNoses are the best. Just my two cents...
Perry Noia 11-15-2008, 12:22 PM definitely try to go somewhere that has them to try on... you can't tell anything from the online pictures or even someone's opinion.... you have to see what fits with your face. I thought I wanted an oval shaped nose (a la Loonette the Clown), but when I tried on the Rose nose from proknows, that just worked for my face. And I probably should be in a small to medium sized nose while the rose is considered very small... it doesn't fit me quite the way it's "supposed" to but it looks nice and it sticks ok too.
Häagen-Dazs 11-15-2008, 12:29 PM ProNoses are available in several finishes - although a retailer may just carry shiny red as the default choice. There is a matte finish (very nice) as well as a fleshtone (not always a close match to your skintone) as well as many different non-traditional colors. For those who might want a little flash, there is even a glitter finish. Ask you supplier what other choices are available or contact Proknows directly for more choices. I bet they would be happy to work with you to create a "just right" nose.
IMHO, the MR style - a medium sized, ovalish style - sounds closest to what you are looking for and looks great on many different faces. If you wanted to go a bit bigger for more of a comid effect, try a RALPH.
And . . . happy pre-birthday!
Teemo 11-15-2008, 01:33 PM lol, thanks all.
unfortunately, there's no place in town that sells them, so no place to try any on.
While I am partially a Mime, I kinda wanted the nose to A) add just a wee bit more color to take the edge off, and B) get people to quit griping at me when I start talking.
I kinda wish that the Richmond, Va alley was holding the convention this year, then it'd at least be somewhat close to home. I'm sure there'd be someone selling these things out there.
Sir Toony Van Dukes 11-15-2008, 02:25 PM I don't think it will help getting a nose before Christmas, but Circus Magic is in Williamsburg in February. I bet they will have someone selling noses.
Teemo 11-15-2008, 02:29 PM Circus Magic? Williamsburg? This is relevant to my interests.
Do you have more information on this Magic of Circusness?
Sir Toony Van Dukes 11-15-2008, 03:13 PM Check out their website... Circus Magic Entertainers Convention for Clowns, Magicians, and other Variety Artists (http://www.circusmagic.com/)
Circus Magic, February 20-22, 2009
at the Holiday Inn Patriot. Located in the heart of Williamsburg, Virginia
I haven't gone to any of their events, but another clown mentioned it to me a few weeks ago.
Teemo 11-16-2008, 11:58 AM Wow, that's great. Thanks a bunch!!!
Teemo 11-16-2008, 04:02 PM Well, my mom stopped by work today. I showed her the Circus Magic website, and she's definitely interested in going. Then I showed her my top three choices, the black BS-2, the red BS-2, the red MR, and she like the red R (square) noses.
So she had me order them as an early birthday present...
I love my mom. ^.^
Perry Noia 11-16-2008, 04:19 PM All of them? wow! nice mom!
Teemo 11-16-2008, 04:26 PM Yup, all of them. We also got to talking about fixing up my '68 VW Bug, painting it black and white, putting "Teemo" on the license plate and putting a big red car-sized clown nose on the hood latch.
You can see the car clown nose here (http://www.justclownnoses.com/car-clown-noses.html).
saphireSue 11-16-2008, 08:51 PM sounds great, happy birthday too.
Violet 11-16-2008, 08:54 PM That car nose is cute!
And you have a great mom, Teemo!
Teemo 11-17-2008, 09:45 AM Thanks, everyone. I showed my mom the forum, yesterday. She was quite impressed with the effort Princess put into it, and with the wonderful community you all have built. She really kinda marveled at the variety of faces and personalities that everyone here brings, and it was the first time she'd seen my black and white look (before I was a neon-colored pirate named Cap'n Pockets).
I think one of the reasons that I love this community so much, even with the short time I've been here, is that you all, collectively, remind me of my mother. You're supportive, imaginative, funny with the ha-ha's and funny with the groaners. I've learned so much from all of you in the last month that I'm completely blown away and a totally different (and better) clown for it.
From the bottom of my big red foam heart, thank you.
Teemo 11-19-2008, 08:30 AM Well, my noses came in yesterday... sort of.
For some reason, the package was missing the R nose (square one). I sent an e-mail to him, letting him know, and I'm hoping he'll be able to send it to me because it just didn't make it into the box, rather than they're back-ordered or something like that.
But I definitely like the MR nose.
Teemo 11-19-2008, 11:08 AM UPDATE: I got a response back, and they're putting it in the mail today. ^.^
I really like these people. VERY impressed, indeed.
Perry Noia 11-19-2008, 11:35 AM so are you going to show us a picture of the one you got??
Teemo 11-19-2008, 04:25 PM As soon as I find my camera and can get a couple of shots, I'll definitely post them.
Teemo 11-20-2008, 09:26 AM Let me just say that I absolutely LOVE being in the same state as Proknows. They sent my forgotten nose yesterday, and I just received it.
U the Clown 11-20-2008, 12:37 PM Leon is a consumate professional, and a genuinely great person with whom to do business. He once sent me a pair of shoes that he was selling on his site, and was only going to charge me if they fit, and I decided to keep them. They did not fit my already humongous feet, but I found a fellow joey that was keen on purchasing them, and the deal went through. By the by, I use the BR, the MS2 and the Ralph, including a green MS2 for St. Patrick's Day events. Hope your experience with the ProKnows goes as well as mine has over the years.... Bump a nose, Teemo!!!
Teemo 11-20-2008, 01:37 PM Here are the first four pictures of the two BS2 noses that I got.
Teemo 11-20-2008, 01:38 PM And here are the MR and the R noses. I think the MR is my favorite for the face that I use.
Christopher Clown 11-20-2008, 02:19 PM Hey Teemo... I wear the "MR" Nose as RD it is quite round and bulbous... bigger than I was thinking ... I'm just thankful that I didn't order the MR2 or whatever the next size up was...
Teemo 11-20-2008, 02:26 PM Yeah, I think the MR2 would be a bit big for my face, but the MR is exactly what I was looking for. I wanted round, but something more oval out to the sides. MR perfect.
Perry Noia 11-20-2008, 08:13 PM Wow... I should try on an MR the next time I'm looking at them... that's the shape I was originally looking for. I like it... it reminds me of the Loonette the Clown type nose.
The BEAST 11-20-2008, 08:35 PM Yeah, I think the MR2 would be a bit big for my face, but the MR is exactly what I was looking for. I wanted round, but something more oval out to the sides. MR perfect.
I like the BS2 on you best...it appears to fit your face better. Especially like the black nose. I wear a Pro-Nose "Ralph"...it's
a big nose.
Fitzwilly 11-20-2008, 11:39 PM You're just bigger than life all the way around my friend.
The BEAST 11-21-2008, 12:43 AM That's for noticing my good friend.
Teemo 11-21-2008, 09:29 AM It doesn't help that my MR is a little off-kilter. When it was molded, the right side is longer than the left side, so it skews the nose to the left some.
Sir Toony Van Dukes 11-21-2008, 04:29 PM What a fun set of noses. The black nose is interesting. Not sure about square, but I am sure that it would look good with the right makeup and costume.
Joe Carr 11-29-2008, 11:23 AM are you able to pull a sleight of hand nose exchange? I guess that would be rather difficult, but if you could, that square nose would be a fantastic gag after a prat fall or a collision with an imaginary wall. I'm laughing just thinking of it.
Butterscotch 11-29-2008, 12:50 PM Teemo, I've been to Circus Magic and it's a nice mini convention! I believe that Bubba Sikes will be there and if he is, he carries Pro Knows noses....
Teemo 11-29-2008, 01:13 PM are you able to pull a sleight of hand nose exchange? I guess that would be rather difficult, but if you could, that square nose would be a fantastic gag after a prat fall or a collision with an imaginary wall. I'm laughing just thinking of it.
Actually, a slight of hand nose-change would be pretty easy. Palm the square nose, when you fall, or get popped in the face, your hands go straight to your nose. One pulls the current nose off, the other puts the square one on. If you do this while bending over and straightening (think Jack Nicholson Joker when Vicki threw a glass of water in his face "I'm melting scene") it will mask the hand motions trading out the noses.
You will, however, want to go light on the spirit gum on the first nose, and have something that doesn't air-dry as quickly on the second, unless the gag is at the very beginning of the act.
