View Full Version : How did you choose the clown name you have?
MercyMe 04-29-2004, 09:58 AM Hi All!
I was just wondering how you all chose the name you have. Was it a nickname you already had? Was it inspired
of God? Did your costume help you decide? What was the deciding factor?
MercyMe 04-29-2004, 10:01 AM I suppose I could tell you how I chose my clown name. ;-) It wasn't too difficult. There were two names, 'Blossom' and 'Mercy Me'. Blossom because through God I have blossomed and bloomed. Mercy Me because God had mercy on me. Well, I chose Mercy Me. It is a great name for my character.
Anonymous 04-29-2004, 07:10 PM It was easy. When I first got the idea to start clowning I wondered about a name. My character is a girl clown about the age of my target audience, pre-schoolers.
When I was that age myself, I remember my mother called me "Pattycake". Perfect, and that's my clown name now.
patchesduhclown 04-29-2004, 10:56 PM heheh.. makes me laugh thinking about it... I originally went with the name "Loopy" for my first character (he's now known as my brother to the kids) when I changed characters I had to change the name as well.. just kind of fit the clothing... I wanted to be a semi hobo type clown yet more on the Auguste side
I had done some clowning with a couple of our church youth at a parade and used a hat I had lent one of them.... he had called his character for the day Patches... well.... he was done with it so I asked if I could use the name.... sure enough.....it stuck! :-D :-D
Scruffy 05-03-2004, 06:23 AM The first time I tried a tramp face was for a halloween party. I went through the closet, found some mismatched clothes and called it good. When I got there my Aunt said boy you look scruffy (or something to that effect)! So it started there, and everything else was done around that name. I refined my face, created a patched and ragged costume, and about 20 years later, here I am!

Binky 05-03-2004, 03:06 PM Our Puppet Ministry performed a musical called "Three Wisemen and A Baby". The Third wiseman was named Binky. I liked it, so I used it.-Binky
Jubilee 05-04-2004, 01:58 PM Well, Rainbows have a special meaning for me for many reasons and I wanted the name to reflect the idea that I was letting Christ shine through me, so Rainbow Brite was born. I like the name alot. Hope there aren't too many of us out there with the same name! Smile.
saphireSue 05-04-2004, 08:54 PM For several reasons I wanted my real name to be part of my Clown name thus Sue, and I really wanted a Royal Blue wig. SaphireSue came from that and has really been useful in developing my character. In hospital ministry I"m SaphireSue, here to Cheer U, and I'm True Blue. I'm one of Gods precious stone, just a chip of the old block etc.
TipTopTom 08-10-2004, 11:45 PM I used the Uncle Sam design from a thanksgiving costume pattern, but I had it made just using primary colours.
When my mother-in-law brought the finished product over to our place I was talking about how tall the hat looked. My wife chuckled and said I could be called Tip Top Tom.
Up until then I had been Toto, but the new name suited my new costume, so I thought it was a good idea.
I had previously chosen Toto because that's what my older sister used to call me when I was 8 years old.

I tried on several names before one finally stuck. I wanted something a bit different, but easy for the kids to say. I even went to the trouble of asking several smaller kids to get their ideas.
BIPS seemed to have the right kind of velcro or glue, because it stuck on me good! :)
Jubilee 08-12-2004, 10:26 AM I changed my name from RainbowBrite because of concerns about being confused with the cartoon and copyright law, etc.
My friend was looking through the Thesaurus when I was trying to find a new name and she saw Jubilee as one of the meanings of the word Happy. I remembered Jubilee from the Bible too, so I thought it was the perfect name. Much less common than anything with Rainbow in it! Hahaha.

Picaburu 10-04-2004, 08:21 PM In fact my first clown name was Bimbo (becuaseu this is an abbreviation of an italian word - Bambino - which means children). But, when I started a clown course, my teachers gave names to all of us... And my name was construct joining the name of two birds (woodpecker - in portuguese - PICA Pau, and another, that I don't know the translation... But is JaBURU)... It happens because, my hair in that time was so big (like the woodpecker's hair)

mr_buckaroo 10-04-2004, 11:44 PM my clown name came from my profesion a buckaroo is a type of cowboy that works in oregon cal. wasington and nevada area and is a little more flashy than a say a cow from texas or oklahoma. and i figured it would be the perfect name for a cowboy clown
Gilbert 10-05-2004, 12:32 PM My name was given to me by my fellow trainees as I trained with Roly Baine. During our first workshop Rolly poured a binbag full of hats and fake noses into the centre of the floor and told us to choose a nose and a hat from which we were to create a character. We had to have a name, a place of work and a home town/city. I picked up a bowler hat and a posh nose, seeing a black umbrella in a corner I grabbed it and when my turn came around I Introduced myself as "Gilbert from Gilford (near London) and I work in the City (London)" From that moment on everyone called me Gilbert.
