It's not that difficult to learn and they are inviting props for an audience.

Plates comes in slightly different dynamics. I use heavier plates which a lot of jugglers have told me they really like as they are more stable. But that also makes it harder to hand off to a little kid for interaction.

Here a few tips:

1: The longer the stick the easier it goes. With that you also get the first thing: Hold the stick as low as possible although the first intention is to grab the stick as close to the plate thinking you gain more control but it just makes it harder.

2: Hold the stick in your fist with just your index finger in the same line as the stick. This is to gain control.

3: Hold and keep the stick straight vertical into the air.

4: Now make small circles in the air with the point of your stick out of your wrist (not out of your elbow).

5: KEEP YOUR WRIST LOOSE. When your knuckles get white it is going wrong. Spinning plates is done with a very loose wrist and very loose hand. All your mussles must be loose and relaxed to make it work.

6: Give the plate time to get into a nice spinning motion. Havbe patience. If your not your tend to tighten your mussles and make the plate to make circles aroung the plate.

7: The effect you want to get is that the stick is making circles while the plate is spinning in one place. The plate should NOT make circles around the stick! Does that happen loosen your mussles and try again.

8: When the plate spinns. Stop making circles with your stick abrupt and place the stick suddenly with a flick in the centre of the plate.

Plate spinning isn't hard it is all about searching for that feeling that sertain touch. It can be hard to find it or you just find it in no time and when you've found that touch you think is this all there is too it.

Hope this will help. I don't think there are really books about plate spinning because there isn't that much more to it.

Dube is good for most things, it seems.

Platespinning is so fun, I love the look on people's faces when you hand them or their child a spinning plate and wander off aimlessly....
It took me forEVER to learn to spin properly, but once you've got it, you've got it!

I say GO FOR IT :D

Have fun, happy spinning!

You guys know about Gilligan,s wheels ? He is one of the Spears sons(as in shoes) located I think in springfield Mass. He has tricycles and stuff too. Little mini bikes etc. He is very good on advice for his customers.

Is Gilligan still selling the bikes? I thought I had heard he decided to stop. I meant to ask John at Moosecamp, but never remembered. Is the website still www.gilliganswheels.com?

I did the south shore joeys convention a few years ago with him and he was telling me he was getting out of it. The last time I did it just his dad was there with shoes. I don't know if he changed his mind or just is trying to deplete his stock.(he had a lot of it).
If you can reach his dad I'm sure he could tell you whats up.

Looks like he took it down.
