I was reading a clown blog yesterday

and they mentioned "fleshing" Out there skull cap, What does that mean? And how do i do it?

My understanding (and someone can correct me if I am wrong) is that, essentially, one has to periodically put flesh colored makeup upon the cap (and powder it dry, I assume) in order that it appears natural should it show at all. I imagine that a whiteface clown has to sort of white out their skull cap, similarly.

im goin with tim on this i havent worn a skull cap but i have a cowl that i wear sometimes and i used to have a bald silly boy both of which had to be painted. what i did was wrap my wig head with plastic wrap and put the wig/cowl on it and then use a sponge wedge or your fingers and massage the paint into the fabric trying to get it all even and stuff and then you go and powder it. really well! then you can go back and brush it and take some water and get rid of the extra powder just like your face. the only time you really need to redo is when you wash it then you will have to touch up some spots probably.

i doubt it would work as well with a latex cap.. you would wanna get Rubber mask grease paint for that it has some extra stuff in it to make it stick to latex better other makeup will just slide off eventually. but to wash a wig you would hand wash it with shampoo and then let it air dry but really with a synthetic wig just do like spot cleaning.. i think pricilla has a care sheet with washing instructions on her website or else it just comes with wigs i forget when one lol

I made me a skull cap out of a strechey Cotton Poly blend, then i put my wig on top of that.

does the same steps apply.

I made my bald wig out of a latex bald cap and a wig I just cut the crown out of and then I just glue the wig on to the cap with liquid latex and sprayed some white crepe hair blue and glued that on top of the wig so that way it looks natural.

I think skull caps that are fleshed out to match what ever you are, auguste/whiteface., complete the look.
There are also wig caps these are the ones usually made out of hose type material, you don't need to do any coloring to these as these are intended to help keep you hair under your wig and don't show.

An alternative to using your flesh-colored grease-paint makeup base:
Fabric paint!
Not only will only have to paint it once (as opposed to re-applying and re-powdering your cap with grease-paint), but washing it will never be easier.
You can find fabric paint at craft stores, hobby stores, fabric stores, even Wal-Mart. Be sure to buy a selection of colors to help you custom-blend your own skin color match. Paint several samples on similar fabric and let them dry before painting on your skull cap.
This may not be the traditional way of "fleshing out" your skull cap, but is less expensive and less work. ;)
Oh, and here's a link to those Wig Care instructions that somone mentioned: Pricilla Mooseburger Originals - Care and Washing Instructions (http://www.mooseburger.com/pricilla/care)
