View Full Version : hobo advantage in magic
Dusty B 03-24-2009, 04:21 PM Ive recently discovered an advantage to the hobo clown when doing some types of close-up magic... after investing in a pair of the red D'lite thumb-tips I briefly struggled with figuring out how to use them in my clown act. Then it hit me, hobos can use fingerless gloves! So I cut the thumb out of my gloves just long enough to hide the thumbtips' open end. Now I can use them and show my hands wide open and it's not at all obvious that the tip of the thumb is fake. to me, this opens up a world of possibilities, different D'lites, regular hollow thumbtips for making silks disappear, and using them close-up! figure I can make little mini-pockets in my jacket pockets for holding the different types of thumbtips.
just thought I'd share!
Keep on Clownin'!
Scooter! 03-24-2009, 04:44 PM Thats a great Idea! Its always good to have a pair of D'lites handy, as well as a regular and a jumbo thumb tip. Do you have the Bill Tarr book "Now you see it, Now you don't"? He has a great idea for a coin dropper to be lpaced in a jacket or vest (or possibly behind a tie) that could be incorporated for a thumb tip dispenser w/o goin into your pocket...If you dont have the book tell me and i will explain it...
mr. kellygnc 03-24-2009, 04:55 PM too cool i never thought of the fact that alot of clowns wear fingerless gloves!

the D'Lites are the only trick thumb-tips I have so far. Wasn't impressed with the idea of thumb-tips until my 'WOWZA!' moment with the gloves. And, no, I don't have the book you're referencing.. Behind the tie seems like a great idea, specially for some of my wider ones!
Scooter! 03-24-2009, 05:29 PM Well, what you do is, you pin a safety pin wherever you want tograb the thumb tip/D'lite and attzch a paper clip to it. Then attach the thumb tip to the paper clip so that it grabs it. The you can grab it pretty easily w/o it falling every time you move...I will see if I can post a pic. That way you can walk around, shake some hands, do some other stuff, and then grab it...Then just ditch it in your pocket or something...
SuitcaseSam 03-24-2009, 06:04 PM Hey Dusty B, you've found out one of the fascinating things that works well with Hobo Clowning is that....with Hobo Clowning lots can be "self-contained".
Just imagine for a minute the Cups & Balls routine or the pea & Nutshell routine done with empty soup cans. The possibilities with Hobo Clowning and Magic is endless. It just takes a little thought and alot of creative imagination.

Scooter! 03-24-2009, 06:12 PM And flash paper! you can act like a dove pan is one of those barrels in new york that hobos huddle around, with a big flash! maybe not...just thinkin out loud..
Simply Knute 03-24-2009, 06:39 PM HEY!! dont you hobos get a big head or anything... im an auguste and i have fingerless gloves too!! it makes it easier to do balloons that way!! :D and plus i have short fingers so if i dont cut them out i have extras on the ends lol
Dusty B 03-24-2009, 07:05 PM Hobos with big heads? next thing you know we'll be dressing in fancy clothes, eating at find diners, and purchasing tickets for the circus trains rather than just hopping on empty cars... hmmm...maybe use a tuxedo cane and silk hankerchief rather than regular stick and bandana to carry our extra gear.... lol

I use gloves with the fingers cut out and do a trick with the ball and vase and tell the kids the balls name is hanky why you ask because when i put in my hand he turns to a hanky the i do this is put a small red silk inside the glove with the tip at the top of the thumb then i pretend to put the ball in and say the magic words than voila i pull out the hanky and the ball is gone
