View Full Version : Arty Cakes stitches 08-07-2009, 01:04 PM Silly Farm has new Arty cakes. has anyone used them and what do you think of them? Perry Noia 08-07-2009, 08:41 PM I haven't personally used them, but I saw Mama clown using them at camp... she really seems to like them. I find them a little small and the colours in the pallets to be so similar it barely seems worth it to me, but that's just my opinion. She mainly used them for flower petals and leaves from what I saw, I suppose it is quicker than double loading your brush. stitches 08-07-2009, 08:57 PM I thought they seemed small too. It says .25 oz. The same size of a solid color is $4, so I think $10 is outrageous. I ordered the rainbow because I think I will get a lot of use out of it - I usually paint the 5 or 6 colors on a sponge. We'll see if this is better - it should be for the cost. Sir Toony Van Dukes 08-07-2009, 11:06 PM I bought one of the red/white/blue ones at Moose Camp. I haven't had a chance to try it out, so I can't say what I think. When I was at Circus Magic, Gary Cole suggested buying one of the Snazaroo Rainbow palettes (8 colors with 2ml each) and popping the paints out of the container, stacking them up and cutting down the middle to make a rainbow palette. With a little effort to reshape the paints, you can make your own. Perry Noia 08-08-2009, 08:25 PM the box they are in is about an inch square, maybe an inch and a half... it's pretty much for loading a large brush rather than a sponge. AlysonSunny 08-09-2009, 01:08 AM I got one from Momma at camp... they are sweet, you can make some beautiful things with them, just need the right size brush! Snookie 08-09-2009, 08:38 PM Being new to face painting, I love that these cakes make it super easy for me to make great designs, including masks and puppy dogs. I agree with Sir Toony, if you have a left over Wolfe mini palette then you can cut small strips and make your own because the square shape (of the removable paint well) is perfect for the one-stroke brush. I have made 6 "arty cakes" that way and I get to choose my own color arrangement. Also, there is a website, Jest Paint HOME (http://www.jestpaint.com/) where she has more affordable "arty cakes." Silly Farm and youtube have a ton of tutorials on the arty cakes, if you want to learn more designs. The cakes are best with the Donna Dewberry one stroke brushes that you can find at a craft store. funfacesforu 08-11-2009, 08:19 AM Clash the Clown (Jest Paint) has some good youtube face painting videos. stitches 08-11-2009, 03:17 PM Where would one find containers for making their own striped paints? I have paint "remnants" that I could certainly use. That would be great! Perry Noia 08-11-2009, 04:55 PM you could use any empty container that used to contain your paints to put a homemade rainbow cake in. Snookie 08-11-2009, 05:45 PM I like the way Clash uses the sponge tipped brushes for her paints too. I haven't gotten that down yet.... Yeah, I just re-used old containers for the remnants too. I suppose if you wanted something smaller a clean lip gloss tub may work. I guess if you had enough remnants an ice cube tray would make an interesting palette.....? But then how would you protect the paint...? Sigh...just when I think I had something going...... Perry Noia 08-11-2009, 06:00 PM I don't use it for rainbow cakes, but I've been keeping all of my paints in a "bead organizer" from Michael's... I had a Snazaroo professional palette, but it didn't fit in my new rolling toolbox that I'm keeping all of my clown stuff in. The box has little sections in it (sealed on the bottom or it would be a mess) and a hinged lid that goes over the whole thing. Another clown said something to me about "repackaging" my paints, but I don't see how it's any different than popping out the little teeny cakes that fit into the snaz palette... it's all loose paints in a plastic holder. And the professional walk around palette doesn't even have a lid the way this one does. pixcoco 08-11-2009, 07:02 PM When I used snaz I used the same container. (sounds like) It was great as long as it didn't get tipped upside down and left that way. (unlikely) When I switched to paradise I no longer had a need to put the paints somewhere else. Snaz packaging breaks very easily. As far as re-packing. I faded a lot of heat about that. But it is no different than what Mama clown aka marcella did and then sold them. I have since been told there are not restrictions about repacking. I figure once you have opened and touched you have contaminated them as much as anything. A good reason to have liability insurance.
