View Full Version : Kena Klowns to speak to GSA
A local group of Girl Scouts asked our Shrine Klown unit (Kena Klowns) to help the girls get their badge for Klowning. We happily agreed, and now we'll be addressing a very large group (>100) of Girl Scouts in March.
We'll be speaking about the Shriners Hospitals and how Shrine Klowns fit into the big picture. We'll switch gears and talk about the different types of klowns, klown make-up, wardrobe, demeanor and working Klown jobs. We'll tell them where they can find more information about Klowning too (like this website, for example). We've already drafted a Power Point presentation for the first bit. It has loads of pictures and should keep them interested for 20 minutes or so. We'll break them up into groups and teach them a few Klown skills for the remaining hour and a half. We'll have a Klown or two at different stations to teach various klown skills like a couple of simple magic tricks, some physical comedy, a balloon animal, that sort of thing.
We plan on notifying the local paper and handing out literature about Shriners Hospitals.
We should have fun.
The_Princess_of_Bozonia 02-18-2006, 11:50 AM That sounds like a lot of fun, TJ! Can you suggest anything you'd like me to do to prepare for a possible influx of these kids?
Anonymous 02-18-2006, 03:33 PM Sounds like a blast! Also slightly off the topic, how does one become a shriner clown?

One must be a Freemason first. See the following link for more info on becoming a Shriner:

Here's a website about Shrine Clowns:

There is a group of Lady Clowns that are part of the Ladies of the Oriental Shrine. Some History:
The Ladies Oriental Shrine of North America was organized in West Virginia in 1903. The purpose is to provide financial support and assistance to the Shriners for their network of hospitals, including funding for transportation, sewing for the children, purchase special equipment, and for the support of research. This Order does not claim to be an auxiliary of the A.A.O.N.M.S., but we are proud of the great humanitarian kindness and strive to cooperated and assist our Nobles in their effort. Membership is open to ladies who are at least eighteen years of age and who are related by blood, marriage or adoption to a member in good standing of A.A.O.N.M.S. All courts consist of 10 elected officers (the top position being the High Priestess), 7 appointed officers, and aides and pages as needed. Courts may also have clubs and units.
As far as the expected influx, Michelle, I think we're fine. I listed the website as a resource for obtaining Klowning information. These girls will likely be looking for educational information on Klowning topics.
Our gig with the Girl Scouts went very well. We had six Klowns turn out for the event plus I brought my oldest boy (he's almost 5 and he's a great Klown already). I started the gig off by calling a girl from the audience to help me and "TJ jr." with a simple magic trick. I gave a power point presentation on Shriners and Shriner Klowns, then talked about the origins of Klowns as well as Klown types and other tid-bits. The funny thing is, while I was talking the girls were watching "TJ jr." the whole time. He was pulling shinanigans behind my back while I was talking. I became distracted a cuple of times, but the girls totally loved it. It wasn't even rehersed either. For the rest of the day, the girls kept asking him for a hug. It was really sweet.
We Klowns then paired up at various stations and the girls came to visit each group of Klowns to learn a new Klown skill. We had a pair teach simple magic, a pair teach make-up, and a pair of us, with my son, teach how to twist a balloon dog. We had each group for roughly 30 minutes. It was a huge success. We even received several donations to the Shrine Klown "Sneaker Fund." (see: http://www.shrineclowns.com/html/sneaker.html) A good time was had by all.

I was wondering what badge the girls were working towards. I tried doing a search on a couple of what seemed to be major girl scout websites but didn't come up with any clown badge. I was thinking about a new source of junior Joeys. I haven't checked yet but I just thought about the Awana program. Do they have a clowning badge/honor? The Pathfinders program have a clowning honor but it is not standardized across the board.
