Memory Box
By Susan Ritch
Initially written for 2 puppets Crystal and Sally but could be adapted for 2 clowns.
Opens with Crystal sitting on her porch looking sad.
Sally – Hey Crystal, what’s up girl friend?
Crystal – Oh…..Nothing I’m just thinking about Alex.
Sally = Your brother? Man he was so cool. I miss him a lot.
Crystal – Yeah … I really miss him especially, how he used to play with me, remember when he helped us build the tree house?
Sally – The he decided it would make him and his friends a better clubhouse and they kicked us out. I still get mad when I think about it……Oh Crystal I’m sorry I didn’t mean it.
Crystal – It’s OK Sally I still get mad at Alex.
Sally – You do?
Crystal – Yeah, Mad that he left me alone, now I don’t have a big brother to look out for me, and I have to do all the chores around the house, and mom won’t let me go any where, she’s afraid I’ll get into trouble or worst. Yeah, I still get mad.
Sally – I guess that’s kinda tough.
Crystal = Oh Sally, I get so confused inside. I loved my brother; I mean I really loved him. One min. I’m so lonely and sad, the next min. I’m mad about how things changed because he died, then I feel guilty because I got mad and mom and dad worry about me which makes me feel more guilty and I worry more. I don’t know what to feel.
Sally = Crystal your feelings are yours, no one can tell you what you should feel. There’s nothing wrong with feeling angry or sad, it’s HOW YOU Feel. I know what, let’s make a memory box about Alex.
Crystal = A Memory Box? But I don’t have any thing to put into one.
Sally – Yeah you do. We can draw a picture of our playhouse, and write about the time Alex brought home that snake and tried to talk your mom into letting him keep it as a pet.
Crystal – [laughing] He tried to convince Mom is was for a class project. She didn’t fall for it.
Sally - [laughing] Oh and remember that time we caught him being All that for those girls at the movies.
Crystal – [chuckling] He got made cause we kept making kissing noises behind them.
Sally – See Crystal we’ve got lots of stuff to write about and draw for the box. It will help to remember the good and bad times.
Crystal OK, Let’s get started.
