Tip hat Instructions - Valentine Heart Hat

Dewey's
Good News
Balloons Instructions for Ralph Dewey's
"Valentine's Hat"
By Ralph Dewey A cool hat for Valentine's Day can be made by using the "Chain Weave". It's not that difficult to learn and it gives an interesting look to the hat.
You Will Need:2 - Red 160s2 - White 260's1 - 6" Heart Balloon Instructions: The Headband
Fully inflate two red #160 balloons except for 2-1/2" and tie their nozzles together. Then fully two white #160 balloons except for 2-1/2" and tie their nozzles together. Each link of the "Chain Weave" will need to be approximately 4-1/2" long if the hat is meant for an adult. Use shorter lengths if you make it for a child. You will need to make a total of 7 sets of red links and 6 sets of white links. Position the knots of the white #160 balloons 2-1/4" away from the knots of the red balloons. Then twist off two 4-1/2" red bubbles (one link) thus capturing the white knots. That makes the first set of 4-1/2" red bubbles.

Twist off a set of white 4-1/2" bubbles in the same manner. Continue alternating with red and white sets of bubbles until you have 7 red sets of bubbles and 6 white sets of bubbles. Tie off the white balloons at the end of the 6th set of bubbles. Tie together the beginning and end of the 7 sets of the red balloons. That completes the chain headband.

The Heart
Take a 6" red heart balloon and inflate it to about 90% and tie off the nozzle. Connect it at the front of the headband between the 3rd and 4th set of white bubbles.
That can be one way to finish the Valentine hat. But if you would like to enhance it even further, you can add a 30" section of another white #160 balloon to it. At the nozzle end twist off a 1" bubble and ear-twist it. Shape it into a heart shape and then twist off another 1" bubble and ear-twist it. Connect the first ear-twist between the 3rd and 4th red bubble and connect the second ear-twist to the 4th and 5th bubble. See the photos for details.
Now your Valentine hat is completed.

Dewey originated his “Balloon Excellence Awards” in 2004 designed to recognize and encourage talented twisters throughout the world and each year he presents these awards to deserving balloon professionals. Dewey gives God the full credit for his success.

I think my favorite part of this is the nice, clear, step-by-step photo directions. I've read too many instructions like "make six 1" bubbles, a 2" bubble, and four more 1" bubbles. Twist them all together and then take the first part and wrap it around the middle part." HUH? When you're writing instructions, pretend that the audience has no idea how to bend a balloon.

Fitz, I could use some good easter stuff for Children's Church. I'm in with 3 & 4 yr olds at least until the end of March if not longer. Then I'll be moving up to work with older kids. And I have found that they ALL love balloons!
