"The Spider & The Redback"
The smaller spider is ideal for display in a garden scene or as table décor. This easy to construct spider can be reduced with ease to fit comfortably into the average palm. A very disturbing thought!.
Instructions for Large Spider available on Decorator Ideas page.
Materials and Equipment:
The following description explains the process for creating a spider approx 25cm (10”) in diameter.
1 x Black 28cm (11”) round balloon
1 x Black 12cm (5”) round balloon
4 x Black 260sSTEP.
Step By Step: 1. Inflate the 30cm (12”) black balloon to 15cm (6”) in diameter and the 12cm (5”) to 9cm (3˝”) in diameter. Join at the necks to form a duplet.
2. At each end of the wire bend approx. a 1cm (˝”) portion back on itself and seal with tape to prevent the sharp edge of the wire piercing the 260.
3. Insert the wire completely into the un-inflated
260 and tie off. The balloon [approx. 12cm (5”) un-inflated] will have to be stretched to reach the 18cm (7”) length of the wire.
4. At the opposite end of the 260 again tiea knot.
5. With both ends 'knotted' trim the excess balloon to allow each end to look similar.
6. Repeat this process for the remaining 3 x 260s.
7. Apply a slight bend to the center of the wire. creating two shorter length legs.
8. At an appropriate position along the leg add another bend to represent the 'knee'.
9. At the end of each leg bend the wire at approx. 1cm (˝”) from the knot to form the 'foot'.
10. Repeat Steps 7-9 using the remaining 3 x 260s.
11. Overlap each of the 4 x sets of legs and place at the 'knot point' of the previously made duplet of 12cm (5”) and 28cm (11”) balloon.
12. Using the loose neck-ends of the two round balloons tie a knot around the 4 x sets of legs to secure and hold into position. A second knot may be required to be tied underneath for extra stability.
13. Position the legs to suit the location required.
14. Remembering that the smaller balloon is the head add a small strip of red tape or paint to the top of the spider’s body. This will give it the appearance of the not so friendly Redback and also give it a design feature.
15. Additional eyes and fangs can be added as desired.
Colors
Black is the generally excepted color for Redback Spiders.
Measurements
Obviously the measurements will depend on the size of spider being constructed. A larger 'Big Mamma' spider can be constructed by using 8 x 260s and tying them together tocreate longer legs and by inflating the round balloons to a larger size.
Ever slight alterations in design gives each spider it's unique characteristics.
