Pickles, I actually started all of my clowning in the Fort Hood, Texas Library. I had no idea what I was doing and the lady I bought my business from apparently didn't either. She had a business running for 9 years, yet only did one party every 3 weeks. I studied the only balloon book they had which was Dr. Droppos (I think) and then there was a book on parties by David Ginn, then I studied clowning and the history of clowns, the history of balloons, the history and art of puppetry, acting, magic and face painting. I was armed with just enough to be able to produce entertainment and then learn from experience.
Alot of books and DVD's can also be found at T-Meyers in Austin, TX. I have one of captain visuals and Ralph Dewey's. I like to take something that is a one or two balloon creation and ask, what can I do to add something to this. Such as if you do a monkey, hang it from a palm tree. Or if you do a butterfly, add a 260 "wand" to it's underbelly to be able to "fly" it, do the samething to an airplane. Now you have an interactive balloon as well as a large sculpture, which is visually more "valuable and attractive". If you put a teddy bear on a heart, then put all of that on a hat...the bigger the better. My favorite videos are that of John the Balloon Man. He has about 24 and I have all of them. They have beasts and bugs, cartoons, crazy hats, gospel balloons, and all kindsa good stuff! Good luck! -Keep Having Fun, Baby!

I made this tonight
Try this Balloon man:
Pinch twist an ear from a 260 5 x 5 inch bubbles rolled through each other Pinch twist for second ear Push a partially inflated 260 through the centre of the head for the nose and neck 160 in the mouth Pinch twisted 260 for the eyes 260 attached to the ears for the hair. I just made the body up as I went putting in joints where needed.

I had pretty much no balloon modelling experience up until a couple of weeks ago when I did a three hour session with a chap called Graham Lee, I have since been to a “care & share” day where Graham was instructing too. I think the best way to advance your yourself is to just find someone local who has really good models on their website and ask if you can pay them to spend a couple of hours with you.
Graham has his own balloon modelling website www.balloonchat.co.uk and you will find him and all the other members to be very helpful – Ask them for any sculpture and they will have a go for you, I asked for Spiderman ideas and two people sent me PDF instructions! Hope that helps.

I was doing face-painting at a company picnic yesterday. There was a non-clown balloon twister there who was SO good. He was handing out very elaborate multi-balloon creations, and I was practically drooling watching him.
So here's my question to those of you who are masters at the art of balloon sculpture: How much did you practice to achieve your level of expertise? I'm thinking that taking out the balloons and pump a few times a month is not going to cut it. At my current level of commitment, I'm never going to get past poodles and bunnies. Do you practice every day? A few times a week?

I make a balloon man every day just to get my speed and confidence up – If you have a portfolio of say 15 models that take 90 seconds each to make then it’s only about 25 minutes a day to make the lot. Don’t pop and throw them away though! I live on a busy high street so I strap mine to the side of my car and put a load of my cards in the rubber at the base of my windows – Then I go back in the house and listen to everyone walking past saying “wow look at them … Go on take one … Get one of his cards too” Get a filbert pump! They are the best and really cheap www.filbertpump.com and also use Sempertex balloons as they are longer and stronger than the other brands. Practice makes perfect.
