Ventriliquism takes lots and lots of practice. I don't ever expect to be as good as the professionals, but do a fair job. However, you can set up a puppet stage and that way you don't have to do ventriliquism. You will probably get more help from folks this way as they can use a script and don't have to memorize a routine. This still takes practice to get the moves down and get folks use to manipulating their thumb so much. For VBS this year I will be in clown, while my counterpart will be in the puppet stage. You can build one economically using PVC or even cardboard (refridgerator box).

Tip hat Remedy suggestion

Since I also have found keeping my mouth shut difficult, I have tried various remedies but what I always seem to come back to, and it seems to be effective for awhile, (until I forget again that is) is the famous "Foot In Mouth" remedy. Once I put my foot in my mouth I usually stay quiet for a while, depending on how intensely it is lodged there.

Thumbs up Venting

I bought a CD from Liz Von Seggan of OneWay Street in 2003 from which I got the basics. From there it was just "practice, practice, practice!" The fun thing about "venting" is you can practice while alone in the car and nobody will know! (ha)

Once you learn the ventriloquist alphabet, it's just a lot of practice. It also helps to attempt to stick to a script. Preschoolers are an easy group to practice with as well. They really don't care if you move your lips (ha!)

Good luck!
