Not necessarily. Sometimes I just use "Tim." People seem to find it cute, friendly, and inviting if not overly unique and silly. But, then, again, I AM weird.
When working on clown names, explore what comes natural to you. Try stuff out. See what sticks. Some clowns find that sort of thing right off the bat. For others, it takes a lot of time and experimentation. More than a few clowns have gone through several names before.
Regarding the critique, please don't take it to harshly. It is not intended as a knock on you or anything, but an offering of helpful guidance. Often, people don't understand a lot of the well learnt nuances which go into creating a strong presentation. And, as artists, we tend to put a lot of ourselves into the creation of our clown. So it becomes a personal endeavor. This is good. But it also can make it challenging to hear things that don't just immediately affirm what we have already done. The thing to do is listen carefully to all the feedback and try to understand what is being said and why in order to grow from what observers/audiences are perceiving, while still staying true to yourself. That's part of the process which we must all go through. Clowning is a constant process of growth in finding oneself and being able to express it effectively... in life, art, and craft.
