In 1968, cartoonist William Steig authored a small volume of drawings in which the captions were only letter sequiences. This book, C D B!, is, to my knowledge, the first published example of this kind of verbal letter/word play.
With apologies to Mr. Steig, I'll substitute a word description for his charmingly naive cartoons, but I'm sure you'll get the humor. Here are a few examples:
Two children observing insect activity around a flower
C D B !
D B S A B-Z B.
O, S N-D !
-----
Two childen in bed
R U C-P ?
S, I M.
I M 2.
-----
A girl looking at bugs.
K-T S X-M-N-N D N-6.
-----
A boy speaking to his dog
I M A U-M B-N.
U R N N-M-L.
-----
A man sneezes
H-U !
-----
A mother to her child who is not pleased with his breakfast options
M N X S L-T 4 U !
-----
A boy involved in backyard play with a blanket and poles
I M N A T-P.
-----
A child in repose under a tree.
I F-N N-E N-R-G.
