Not being able to give a rational answer as to why a person has an "irrational" fear is actually the norm. I lose the term irrational loosely, as the fear is often very real to the person who is afraid.
Why are people afraid of the dark? Small spaces? --- so on and so forth.
Sometimes they have real answers that we (the person who is unafraid) are content with, but more often than not, they are simply excuses and not really answers. Fear of clowns is no different, I think it just so happens that many (if not all) the people on this forum are clowns. With that in mind, it seems natural that people would rather debunk the fear rather than accept it.

I agree that the fear is real for many I just think that a lot of people are saying that they "hate" clowns becouse it is the in thing to do. In general people people do fear what they do not understand. Or in some cases it is just easyer for them to say I do not like clowns then to say I do not understand clowns.

I don't think anyone has ever said they are afraid of the McDonald's commercials or watching Bozo and Friends on TV.
I have been to a variety of events and have seen kids afraid of the Easter Bunny, Elmo, Santa, any just about any other type of costumed character. I don't know why people pick out the clown instead of saying that (some young) kids are afraid of costumed characters.
I think it used to be more common for clowns to have seltzer bottles, squirting flowers, and other stuff to surprise and soak the people around them. I could see people being afraid to get wet or have someone play a practical joke at their expense. But, that is a reason to be afraid of standup commedians.
How many of you have gone to Hallmark or one of the other card stores and looked for a birthday card with a good picture of a clown. I think that in all of my searches, I have only found two or three, and they are always drawings of clowns instead of pictures. There has to be a way that we can positively promote our image and get friendly clown pictures out there. Maybe, we need a new Bozo's Circus program on TV.

Here's yet another commercial featuring clowns. This one is for Dunwoody College of Technology in Minneapolis, and I think it's sort of funny.

The folks who were shooting that commercial came into our shop to rent clown accessories. When we heard what the premise was, we were so relieved that it didn't involved scary or creepy or stupid clowns! Finally, a clown commercial that's funny!
(on a side note, they didn't end up wearing a single thing they rented from us but it all came back with makeup on...hmm. It made us wonder if the folks at the studio were dressing up as clowns just for the fun of it!)
