Hey there clowners! PLEASE give me some tips about doing parades. A totally NEW venue for me. IT is this Sunday and I am lost. WHAT do I do???? What is a no-no???? I need your help!! Thanks so much!!!! Dancin Dot
keep in mind you may be next to a band or something equally as load. A sight gag is the best thing to have. Something funny that shows a pun of some kind would be fun.
It is important that a parade stay moving. Some entrants will stop and dance or whatever. A good clown can fill in a gap if one happens and know to stay caught up when it is moving good. I like to have several things in my head I can do if I need to besides the prop I have chosen.
Will you be with other clowns? That would make filling the gap easier but I realize many parades have just you.
do not throw anything into the crowd, years ago people used to throw candy at parades but most have banned this for safety, as kids run out into the street to get the candy.

I'm in 2-3 parades a year and I do what is called "curb work". I start at the begining of the parade and zig-zag back and forth across the street interacting with the crowd as the rest of the parade passes by. I find this to be more fun for me as well as the crowd. I'm not rushed to "keep up" with the flow. Also, when there is a gap in the parade - guess who becomes the main entertainer?
