Default What's Your Hat?

So what hat do you use for clowning? How do you make it funny?

I don't have a clown hat yet. At Moose Camp, I was wearing either a red, blue, or green bucket hat. I like the hats, but not big enough to wear with my wig. It would work if I go out as an auguste clown. I did see a nice jug head hat that I like, but haven made the plunge to buy it.

At camp I got to wear a painters hat for the gag. In my actuall costume and wig, I didn't think anyone would recognize me in it after or before the show so I got to stay in my costume for the gag...(not to mention my actual costume was wrinkly, uncomforble, and boring!)

I have a boater's hat for tips with a light blue ribbon around. I havn't decieded if I want to wear it or not or just use it for it's beginning purpose.?

I use a bowler I beat to death doing hat tricks with. But the more beat up it gets the better it looks!

My best prop - bar none - is a felt Karen Bell bowler. I can do simple hat tricks with it, play hat toss, just goof off, place it on someone else's head, throw it to others (maybe land it short on the ground.) Everyone wants to join in on the fun!

I also have a Nils Poll tripleweight red/blue juggling hat/bowler. It is heavier than the Bell hat and thus more challenging to manipulate in some sense (easier in another as it is stable.) It fits better with my full auguste look.

If I put on a hobo, then I employ an old tan (with navy blue stripe) fishing hat, crunched down and out.

My red baseball cap enables easy on the spot tricks and fits either a more sporty type look or provides contrast to something seemingly more serious. The current one I use has an E on it. It is actually for the local grade school sports team. But, when asked what it stands for, I reply, "EVERYTHING!"

I've thought about using a yellow funnel upside down with an elastic string to tip it sideways as a hat. An askew allusion to a sort of classic whiteface kind of thing.

Oh, and I like to spread out peacock feathers behind my head to provide an sort of fanned dancing girl headpiece homage.

I use a battered old top hat with a white flower in it, but am looking for an old bowler also.

I wear a terrycloth stovepipe hat. It's made from the same bathrobe I made my tailcoat from.

I use an inexpensive, white sailor hat. To it I clip on a big smiley flower and my favorite pins to show I'm a Christian. That's it. My main objective is to just accent the rest of my costume...I want it to take center stage, not my hat.
