When to write a press release
It's a good idea to write one at least once per month. Whether you are planning a special stunt, doing a charity event, or simply wishing to run a story about your show, you have to let the media know what you're doing.
What is a press release?
It's a very short description of the event to take place. Since the press is very busy, scurrying about from event to event, they have very little time for fluff. So to get the best results, follow this preferred media format:
**Clearly indicate the term FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE as the heading at the top of your page in capital letters
**Include all the contact information including name, title, phone, fax and email address
**Put in a compelling headline like "Local Clown Makes it Big on Mission Trip to Argentina"
**Include the city and date of issue
**A lead paragraph that grabs the press member's attention. Keep it interesting and include the
basics like who, what, where, when and why
**Now elaborate on your lead paragraph. This is where you can go into more detail about the event
**Recap the whole thing with one last paragraph and provide information on cost or any further contact info
Now it's not enough to just write the press release. The next step is to submit it to the right people. I recommend consulting your local Small Business Administration office for these details. Call your local newspaper, TV station and radio to get contact information. Make a record of this and keep in your files for further press releases.
Now you wrote your press release... you sent it to the right people... the next thing to do is to follow up. Send out a modified version the next day, along with a invitation! Call them personally and give them the invite.
Remember, the media loves creativity and we are the most creative performers on the planet. WOW them with your creativity! They are looking for a story. They are not interested in furthering your business.
Hope this helps!
