I try for a short post, but I'm long winded. I just hope some of my chatter is useful.

In our troupe we have a Western Sheriff named Buckshot. His attire is cowboy hat, chaps, western vest with a sheriff badge and he carries a magic rope that stands stiff or limp. The does not wear a bandana for you cannot see it under hit beard. (He does not shave for he needs the beard for the December month.......)

Great advice as usual Fitzwilly! I actually do a pretty straight forward three card monte. I bought a book about the various ways of going about it and have the trick down really well, I have seen those other monte tricks you mentioned but had no idea if they were good. I will have to have my dealer give me a demo! I've been looking for some poker tricks byut they are scarce. Most of them on YouTube are not tutorials which I suppose is in keeping with the code.

Jeremy, I have a "trick" that has two poker chips and they change colors. I don't remember the name of the 'trick' but it may be useful to you. I think its called 'color changing poker chips' but I'm not sure.

Two magic sites with quite a few video clips are www.ellusionist.com and www.penguinmagic.com many times a few repeated viewings will give you an insight.

Wow! You can do the real Three Card Monte? That is fantastic. No wonder you like street performing so much. You never run out of cash *<;-)

Something to think about down the line. With a gambler persona you might want to work on half dollar manipulations more than quarter, because the size is closer to that of poker chips. And here is the kicker: There are a couple of companies out there that still produce custom printed wooden coins about the size of poker chips. Now wouldn't that be a very memorable business card?!

Dan,

You are correct as far as making the perfect period-correct souvenir, However, Wooden Nickels make for a great souvenir for both Clowns & Magicians too.

Check this site out about the Old Time Wooden Nickel Co.

I found wooden nickel blanks at my local Hobby Lobby craft store and also purchased a wood burner from Walmart. With a steady hand, I simply make my own as handouts.

I Love 'Em

Thanks everyone for all the great replies. I think we should be able to come up with some pretty good outfits!

Wow, those wooden nickels are great! $43 is about as much as 100 color business cards too. I'll have to decide how far I want to go with the gambler persona I guess! The outfit I want is about $300 and the nickles and tricks etc make it a $400 investment in the character. I will have to consider all the possibilities with it. I do like the idea quite a bit.

Jeremy, what is the name of the book and who is the author? I am curious. I'll have to keep a look out for it.

I picked the book up in Medford OR. for $3. It's called "Find the Ace" by Leo Behnke. It goes over several routines including a few sleights to make sure even if they guess the right card (and it is MUCH easier to try and guess than to believe your eyes!) they still lose. Here's a link.

http://www.magicity.com/product_info...c942beccf7dc5a

I was on a bus in Seattle years back and a guy got on and approached these two teenagers. He pulled out three cards and a notebook to work them on. Needless to say by the next bus stop the teenagers were out $20 and the guy got off at the next stop. I knew the trick back then and watched in disbelief as they fell for the game.

He used a particularly devious method that is covered in "Find the Ace" wherein the con artist "accidently" puts a crimp in the money card and then removes it secretly and crimps another card so the players think they have an unfair advantage when in fact they were conned again.

Despite the illicit uses available with the three card monte it is an amazing and entertaining routine for a magician. "Find the Ace" covers it in a more magicians oriented manner but like any sleight it could be used for evil!
