Hope your search is going good Gilby! I would also suggest a natural colored clown wig. The rainbow is nice and colorful but red, yellow, orange, etc seem to be the going fashion for clowns (is that kind of an oxy moron?). Clowns Unlimited, which is the big commercial clown company out here in Seattle trains all their clowns to have natural colored wigs. Not saying you gotta follow their lead but from what I see the natural colors are in!

plus having something rather than a rainbow wig makes you appear more than just a average dimestore clown... it helps make you look more professional

One thing I had never considered before was the use of scrub bottoms or tops... Used together or apart both would work with the outfit, be fairly breathable, add a vest hat, shoes, and other accessories and your good to go. They also come in pretty loud colors and prints.

Scrubs are great!! and cheap! That's actually what we used to make Pokey's outfit. That & an old shirt along with scraps of material bought mostly off the $1/yd shelf at Wal Mart. (he's a hobo type clown) All we did was cut the scraps in various shapes & sizes then stitch them all over his pants & shirt. AND the good thing about that is that (besides the cheap price) is that the stitches don't have to be perfect. My 10 yr old cousin even helped sew them on!!!
